Dental School vs. Medical School
Dental school and medical school, in Ethiopia, each require about six and half years of rigorous study to get graduated. The structure and curriculum are almost similar. for instance in AAU Credits and the equivalent ECTS: ECTS โ are about 363 and 364 for regular DMD and MD students respectively . During the first 3 years (in the pre-medical and pre-clinical years) of either dental or medical school, students take similar lecture and laboratory courses in advanced life sciences and pharmacology. preclinical education in human anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, microbiology, embryology and pathology. They study the laws and ethics of their respective professions and get an introduction to clinical practice. In the clinical years of school, dental and medical students assume greater responsibility with patients in supervised practice.
Upon graduation, a dentist is awarded either the Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree or the Doctor of Medical Dentists (D.M.D.) degree. Some schools award the D.D.S. and others award the D.M.D; there is no difference in the quality of education or for licensure to practice. After receiving a degree, dentists must pass the licensure exam in the state in which they'll practice.
Dentists can go into practice as general dentists, or they may opt for additional training, called a residency, that prepares them for specialty practice. Specialty areas include pedodontics or Pediatric Dentistry (children), periodontics (gums and implants), endodontics (root canals), prosthodontics (partials and dentures), orthodontics (alignment) and oral and maxillofacial surgeon (extractions, treatment of birth defects, disease and injury on mouth, neck and face), Dental Public Health, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, . Residencies generally require two years of study and supervised specialty practice after dental school. The exception is oral and maxillofacial surgery, which can require four to six years of additional study.
Depending on the school they choose, physicians earn either a doctor of medicine degree (M.D.) degree or a Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) degree, recently, D.O may not be offered in our country . Like dentists, new physicians must pass their state licensure exams after graduation. They can complete post-doctoral training in a specialty area. The length of training for specialty varies according to the specialty. For instance Physicians who wish to become family practitioners (sometimes called general practitioners) must complete a three-year residency. A residency in obstetrics-gynecology (women's health) requires four years, while a residency in neurosurgery (brain and spinal cord) takes 4-6 years to complete. Even after years of education, some physicians undertake a post-doctoral fellowship to prepare to practice a sub-specialty within their discipline.

From Students๐
Hey Dr. Havan
I have to think for one more time before joining the medical school,I suppose.
some times I feel frustrated and unhealthy stress when I think the coming years in medical school.
Because
1. as far as I know med school needs reading alot and memorizing ability rather than critical thinking,am I right ? But I know that I am better to solve problems rather than memorizing.
2.to be happy in life(obviously, every body needs to be happy what ever career it pursue) I think human beings need fulfillment in their career, self development, marital status,socialising,contribution...
But I think med school does not allow extra 'carricular' activities, additional skill developments like language, leadership skills which are crucial in current world ๐.
3. When I think of to be a doctor I see my future as through out my life to work in hospitals only but I wanna to do scientific researchs and bring some advancement. instead of work in hospitals only until my last breath.
Let me tell you why I choose med school as my first career path:
1. that is because in my opinion MD is respected career not by people, not for its financial reward but the career by it self is respected and it is really amazing and noble!!
To diagnose patients and make them improve in there health status;as a result in there all life aspects is invaluable.
I feel how satisfying it is ,to be honest without considering its compensation.
2. I am interested in how human body works;I love the science .
3.to some extent, I feel warmth from inside to be named
as Dr. Tensaye๐๐ค๐ค even though I don`t know why.
Could you give me your unbiased and sincere advise, please.

Dr. Havanh's Advice
Of course, I'd be happy to provide some advice for your situation.
It's clear that you have put a lot of thought into your decision to pursue medical school and have considered both the challenges and rewards that come with it. It's important to remember that medical school does require a significant amount of reading and memorization, especially in the early years, but critical thinking skills are also crucial in the practice of medicine. While there is a strong emphasis on knowledge acquisition, problem-solving skills are essential in diagnosing and treating patients. so it is not merely memorizing.
Regarding your concerns about extracurricular activities and skill development, it's true that medical school can be demanding and time-consuming. However, many medical students find ways to balance their academic responsibilities with other interests and pursuits. It's important to prioritize self-care and find a healthy balance between your academic and personal life. Havanh Educational Group, an influential organization in Ethiopian universities working on academic and non-academic issues across the country, was founded by medical students years ago. This could imply that it is possible to accomplish other things besides memorizing bulky textbooks in medical school. We are living testimony to your request here is no need to seek out further witnesses.
Your desire to pursue scientific research and contribute to advancements in medicine is commendable. Many physicians engage in research alongside their clinical practice, so there are opportunities to pursue this interest throughout your career. It's important to explore different specialties within medicine to find a path that aligns with your interests and goals.
The salary and business aspect of being a medical doctor in Ethiopia can vary depending on factors such as location, experience, specialization, and type of practice. In general, the average monthly salary for a medical doctor in Ethiopia is indeed around 10,000 or even lower, which is significantly lower compared to many other countries an other professions. that could be discouraging to some extent. but It's important to consider that pursuing a career in medicine should not solely be driven by financial considerations. Medicine is a noble profession that offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on people's lives, contribute to public health, and engage in meaningful work that can be incredibly rewarding.
Thank you, dearTinsaye perhaps you will be the future Dr. Tinsaye!
it's crucial to have a clear understanding of the demands, challenges, and realities of pursuing a career in medicine before committing to medical school. As you mentioned, there are indeed individuals who may be drawn to the title of "Doctor" without fully comprehending the sacrifices and responsibilities that come with the profession.
You are aware of the reality but many students join in medical school solely to obtain the title of Doctor, without initially knowing about the demand, time, and financial aspects of being a doctor.
Ultimately, the decision to pursue a career in medicine is a personal one, and it's important to consider what will bring you fulfillment and satisfaction in the long term. If you feel drawn to the noble and respected nature of the medical profession, and if you have a genuine passion for understanding the human body and helping others improve their health, then pursuing a career in medicine may be the right choice for you.
I encourage you to continue exploring your interests and goals, seeking mentorship from healthcare professionals, and reflecting on what truly motivates you in your career choice. Remember that it's okay to have doubts and uncertainties, but trust in your abilities and passion for medicine as you navigate this important decision.
Best of luck in your journey towards becoming Dr. Tensaye!
