Dental School vs. Medical School

Dental school and medical school, in Ethiopia, each require about six and half years of rigorous study to get graduated. The structure and curriculum are almost similar. for instance in AAU Credits and the equivalent ECTS: ECTS – are about 363 and 364 for regular DMD and MD students respectively . During the first 3 years (in the pre-medical and pre-clinical years) of either dental or medical school, students take similar lecture and laboratory courses in advanced life sciences and pharmacology. preclinical education in human anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, microbiology, embryology and pathology. They study the laws and ethics of their respective professions and get an introduction to clinical practice. In the clinical years of school, dental and medical students assume greater responsibility with patients in supervised practice.

Upon graduation, a dentist is awarded either the Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree or the Doctor of Medical Dentists (D.M.D.) degree. Some schools award the D.D.S. and others award the D.M.D; there is no difference in the quality of education or for licensure to practice. After receiving a degree, dentists must pass the licensure exam in the state in which they'll practice.

Dentists can go into practice as general dentists, or they may opt for additional training, called a residency, that prepares them for specialty practice. Specialty areas include pedodontics or Pediatric Dentistry (children), periodontics (gums and implants), endodontics (root canals), prosthodontics (partials and dentures), orthodontics (alignment) and oral and maxillofacial surgeon (extractions, treatment of birth defects, disease and injury on mouth, neck and face), Dental Public Health, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, . Residencies generally require two years of study and supervised specialty practice after dental school. The exception is oral and maxillofacial surgery, which can require four to six years of additional study.

Depending on the school they choose, physicians earn either a doctor of medicine degree (M.D.) degree or a Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) degree, recently, D.O may not be offered in our country . Like dentists, new physicians must pass their state licensure exams after graduation.They can complete post-doctoral training in a specialty area.The length of training for specialty varies according to the specialty. For instance Physicians who wish to become family practitioners (sometimes called general practitioners) must complete a three-year residency. A residency in obstetrics-gynecology (women's health) requires four years, while a residency in neurosurgery (brain and spinal cord) takes 4-6 years to complete. Even after years of education, some physicians undertake a post-doctoral fellowship to prepare to practice a sub-specialty within their discipline.
