Canada is somewhere between the Us and places like the UK as far as use of firearms and self defence. Thankfully recent court cases have more firmly entrenched the right of self defence, especially for homeowners who are burgled/house invaded. How much if this increase in (often violent) crime is debatable and varies by region (Toronto is definitely due to that, but this guy is in small town Alberta, so less likely), nevertheless that is still a factor on the macro level. It’s pretty clear this guy (and many other Canadians) have had enough and are becoming more proactive, more willing to use force where needed, and less trusting of the police (who seemed bored by all the requests for help when people were burgled, but more than happy to tackle you, beat you down, and haul you away to jail if you dared protest with the truckers). This is becoming the narrative throughout most of the West now.
