Westerners that sympathize with Russia in the conflict in Ukraine need to understand that this is what many Ukrainians are fighting against. The motivation for Ukrainians in the war is not so much about what they’re fighting for — they’re certainly not fighting for Zelenskyy or NATO — it’s about what they’re fighting against. They understand that as long as Ukraine exists, they have a real chance at an ethnostate. But that possibility disappears if Ukraine gets absorbed into the modern, authoritarian anti-fascist Russian empire run by a former KGB agent that’s now a dictator. If Ukrainians lose their territory, they lose their homeland and become just another part of Russia, open to all citizens of the Russian Federation, including many brown Muslims.
