Any war that a) is central to your national mythology, b) has two sides defined as angels and demons, c) is used as a political bludgeon n the current day, and d) will get you in trouble for saying certain things, is 100% propaganda, and you’re not free from it until you realize both sides were just people of their time and place, and the war was no less morally complicated than something like Vietnam or Afghanistan.

When people say "America is an idea" it conveys an ahistorical notion that the Founders and the Colonists never had a national identity and that we had open borders from the start. It conveys that we weren't selective or restrictive with whom we extended an invitation to, and it acts as if letting people from the British Isles or Germany immigrate was some giant negation of identity in the same way as letting Mexicans pour in after 1965.

Yes, you can highlight various mass immigration events into the US during the 19th century, but these were all vigorously fought against by middle Americans and an army of politicians. We won all of those battles too until the 1960s... the same time around which the entire Anglosphere lost similar battles.

I am not saying America is the same as England in terms of national identity, but this "America is an idea" stance isn't true.

To add to this fine post by Course of Empire, there’s really no such thing as a “proposition nation,” because that’s an oxymoron. A nation can only be a people of shared identity, which mostly means race — and the American founders understood this. But if certain people like AA and now Woes want to split hairs over identity being more about ethnicity than race, they’re just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. All Whites everywhere are on the chopping block, so Whites can either fight together or hang together.
