Earlier I used to get myself buried down under piles of references, later on I learned about Reference Managers and then I started selecting only project specific topics that allowed my to not deviate from the goal of my paper.

In this a book called "Starting Your PhD" by Dr Helen Kara helped me lot.
One statement in particular caught my eye, it was "Being a perfectionist is not compatible with doing a PhD. There is no such thing as the perfect thesis or dissertation, only a draft that is good enough to submit. Striving for perfection will invite unnecessary and unhelpful pressure."
