I wanted to talk a little bit about getting into Cybersecurity!
One of the most common questions I get from people who are interested in Cybersecurity is none other than "How do I get into Cybersecurity?". This is a great question! Like most things, there isn't a single golden answer. However, I hope to provide some information on where I believe a good starting point is!
When it comes to being a cybersecurity professional, I like to tell people that you have to be very well-rounded. We have to know a little bit about everything or at least be willing to learn and adapt as needed. With that being said, I believe it is EXTREMELY important that you have a strong foundation of overall IT knowledge that you can use to build upon.
The question is, how do you build that foundation?
What helped me in the beginning, and what I like to recommend, is to start off with reading and obtaining the famous CompTIA trio of certifications, A+, Network + and Security +. The reason why I recommend these three is because they will provide you with that foundational IT information that is needed.
What can you expect to learn from these certifications?
A+ - This will provide you with a deeper understanding of the hardware and software aspects of computers that allows them to actually operate.
Network + - This dives into the network side of IT going over numerous networking concepts and operations as well as troubleshooting and network security.
Security + - This certification will teach you some information on threats, attacks, and vulnerabilities. It will discuss cryptography and risk management as well as many other great security topics.
With these three certifications under your belt, you will start off having a strong foundation in which you can use to then pursue further in-depth topics as you dive deeper into your Cybersecurity career.
These are just some of my suggestions and definitely not the only way to gain some knowledge. I will talk about more ways to help get into the Cybersecurity field in upcoming posts!
