We all know how writing your CV can be boring, time-consuming, and overwhelming. We are coders, not writers, right? Unfortunately, the skill of selling yourself is vital in this cruel capitalist world... And since our registration process requires sending a CV too, we decided to help you: in this pretty short post, we collected some life-saving hacks on how to write your perfect CV.
Letโs start from the education
โข Write full names of your major and university. Youโre not a โCS student at NUโ, you are a โBachelor of Science in Computer Science, Nazarbayev Universityโ
โข Start from the most recent education and include the graduation year and month, or expected time of graduation.
โข Include GPA if it is above 3.0
Now itโs time to mention your experience
โข Write about places where you worked, starting from the most recent, including dates
โข Fully spell the company names. Not โAppleโ but โApple Inc.โ
โข Write what YOU did in that company, what was the result of your work. For example, instead of โadded multi-touch gestures for 3D workspacesโ, it is better to write โintegrated multi-touch gestures for 3D workspaces by creating a deterministic finite state machine for HTML eventsโ
โข Include metrics! If your work increased the efficiency of the website by 15% or saved the company thousands of dollars, you should mention it
Show your projects
โข Work projects, coding bootcamp projects, personal projects - projects that are relevant and you are proud of
โข Write about technologies and languages you used
โข If applicable, include metrics. For example, if you built an app that a few dozens of people downloaded, then you need to include this information
โข Include links to your projects
Donโt forget to include extracurricular activities
โข Again, start from the most recent, and list all the relevant activities you had: hackathons (like HackNU ๐), coding contests, awards, club participation, etc.
Some other thighs worth mentioning
โข The structure of your CV has to be well-organized - use a simple but clear template, bullet points, understandable sectioning
โข Check the resume for grammar mistakes, punctuation, and readability before sending it
โข You should not be modest but donโt lie or exaggerate - an interviewer will easily detect it
โข Limit yourself to 1 page
Though only these tips may not be enough to write a CV, they can boost your chances of impressing employers. Ask your friends, groupmates, colleagues to review your CV, look for examples of good CVs on the Internet, and most importantly be confident, show yourself in the best possible light.
More tips and tricks
Good luck! ๐
