White Hat Hacking

Ethical hacking is confusing to me. I enjoy watching "Scammers getting scammed" videos and it seems like most White Hat hackers have their own rules they follow. Some will infiltrate entire call centers, deposit malicious code to completely destroy the servers. Others, will simply farm data and then delete individual terminals. Still others, if given the chance, will empty scammer bank accounts and then return the money to the bank and report it as fraudulent cash. Point is- each and every single one seems to have their own take on what makes hacking "ethical". So which is it?

Discloure within Academic setting.

I have to use multiple CMS platforms to do my course work at my university. Recently I have noticed low hanging fruit where the server sends answers to the client. How can I responsibly report these in a way that doesnt bring me under fire for academic misconduct? I also want to reap the rewards of merit and another rung on my resume or possibly a cash reward. I just need advice as none of the tools have disclosure programs nor does my uni.

On The Subject of Password Hashes

So, I've been indulging in a lot of podcasts and media such as good ol' Darknet Diaries and its very often when red hats recount their stories that they mention using a username of an account to recover the password hash for later cracking.

How is this done?

Is it an SQL exploit? HTML or CSS exploit? What is done in order to use a username to recover a hashed password? Or is it simply that because it can be used maliciously they leave out the details of the actual process and skip to the point?
