A question for the more experienced pentesters here: does the sense of 'just out of reach' ever go away?
https://www.reddit.com/r/Pentesting/comments/nfdzws/a_question_for_the_more_experienced_pentesters/
I'm not sure even how to ask this question, so I guess I'll just describe a common scenario. I'm looking at a system on HtB or similar, something where I know there's an answer to the box, and trying to find whatever the key step to rooting the box is. I enumerate, I read, I enumerate more, I read more... After days of reading and scanning and searching (on boxes rated 'Easy,' no less) I figure I'm missing something and go find a walkthrough. And it seems like the answer is usually something like 'just use this tool you didn't know existed until now.' It's very frustrating. It seems like no matter how hard I try, the answer is just out of reach. I'd like to attribute all this to my relative n00b-ness (I've been at this for a little less than a year of steady work), but it can be exhausting. Is that simply the nature of this work? It seems like the barrier to entry is so high and no matter what books I read there's always stuff missing. Does that sense ever go away? I feel like I'm constantly alternating between drowning and being tossed a life-preserver. Is this common? Am I just not cut-out for this work? Pros, I need help :\ submitted by /u/Monster-Zero (https://www.reddit.com/user/Monster-Zero)
