tool to discover peers on a network

Hi everyone,

I'm making a little pi dropbox where the pi will try to open a reverse shell to my pc outside the network. I got that part working fine.

What I need help with is discovering peers on the network, do I have to make a program that pings all ip's in the range of xxx.xxx.xxx.000 or is there some tool that im just not finding?
