Reverse shell outside the network

Hey guys, I am trying to use a reverse shell to get into my friend's vm (with his consent of course), we watched some videos, read documentations and all that, but it always resulted in failure. We are using 2 kali vm's and netcat (which are not connected on the same network as said in the title). Do we need to port forward? What network settings should our vm's have?

I would appreciate any indications to help put us in the right track.

Legality

So say a network adapter just arrived here, I get it setup, boot up Kali & I’m sitting on Aircrack/Wifite about to try it out for the first time, I live around apartments, so suppose there are others around also with internet, so from here on, what is legal to do, and what isn’t? And also what’s a way to protect privacy in case something unintentional happened by mistake (because beginner)
