Optimizing Hashcat for Passwords length 1 to 8 no symbols

For a school assignment, I was given 50 hashes to crack (they are in md5crypt, MD5 (Unix), Cisco-IOS $1$ (MD5)) format. The passwords should be only letters and numbers. Currently, I have tried using these masks and brute force commands with wordlists rockyou and kaonashi:

./hashcat -m 500 -a 0 hashes.txt wordlist.txt

./hashcat -m 500 -a 3 hashes.txt wordlist.txt

However, I am only able to crack a few easy passwords and seem to be unable to get any more. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to crack more efficiently?

How to recover BitLocker password from disk image (no login password)?

(Would really prefer not to boot into windos.)

Made image of entire disk with gddrescue. Got six partitions: (1) ESP, (2) BOOTMGR(?), (3) BDP+BitLocker, (4) NTFS "WINRETOOLS", (5) NTFS "Image", (6) NTFS "DELLSUPPORT".

Can easily mount the ESP (vfat/FAT32) and the NTFS ones: as soon as Linux detects them (losetup --partscan) they show up in Thunar, mounting is just a click. Partition 2 might not have a filesystem?

Dislocker would be an extra step (or, later, fstab config?), but I don't have the password.

Since the laptop (cold) boots without any login prompt/password, it makes sense to me that the encryption key must be stored in one of the first two partitions. Maybe boot manager's registry, or some such?

No idea if the "recovery" partitions are of any use.

I've searched (a lot), still in the dark.

Help?
