Shouldnt the first step of learning to h4x be to learn to code?

I am not a hax0r but ive dabbled in computer technology a bit (I got a cert in information technology from a community college) and I'm about to graduate in a program with a mixture of electrical aspects (such as programming PLCs and such) I also play around with arduinos and shit.

I looked at the top post on this sub and it was talking about CTFs a lot, I did some hack the box thing one time which mostly seemed like just navigating linux systems for the "flags" but not really hacking, still good info though.

Ive been trying to learn to "hack" for a long time mostly cause I wanted to feel like I'm helping people, but I'm very socially awkward and such, so helping people with the use of technology seemed interesting to me, such as securing networks and stuff.

I barely passed my IT courses, the networking one made so little sense to me I felt dumb. I got barely Cs in em all just to earn the cert.

I wanna learn more about the actual defense of networks, how to prepare a network for an attack, and how to defend systems from outside.

I keep telling myself to just get better at writing code and that'll be it... but idk..

I found a mass scam email spammer and black hat hacker who I thought I'd take down. If I'm not hired or have any permission of doing so, is this legal?

(yea I know it's probably a dumb question.)

Career pivot from developer

Does anyone have any advice for someone interested in moving from writing code to pen testing? I'm finding myself more interested in Linux and networking and less interested in churning out code for features. Plus, I'm guessing certain political climates could create an increased demand for security or counter-offensive capabilities.
