Building a BOTNET windows driver manipulation

Hey guys, I'm kinda lost looking for an advice.

I'm second year student for CS, I gained interest in constructing a BOTNET, not for harmful proposes only for my own personal knowledge, and it seems like a complex and fun project to make.

I have bought the following book to gain basic knowledge of what I should be looking at: https://www.amazon.com/Rootkits-Bootkits-Reversing-Malware-Generation/dp/1593277164

I started reading and realized I don't have enough basic knowledge in-order to understand that book. I was trying to figure out what I'm missing, I came across Kernel drivers programing using C/C++,

My question is if it is the missing piece? I have good knowledge of C, C++ and Assembly x86, but not yet knowledge of operating systems and windows especially.

I would love a recommendation for a book or topics I should be researching in-order to gain good comprehension of windows drivers manipulations.
