Will linux have effect on my windows pc

I just started learning hacking. I saw many courses advising to use linux. So can i like install linux to my windows pc? I had tried it but din't install it. It was in a browser and the time is limited there, But i wasn't able to use it back then. One of my friend recommended me to install it directly to my pc. Do we need to purchase it? And will it mess up my pc if it's a potato?
