Has anyone built a basic cantenna that worked really well? What was your secret?

I have tried a couple of times but something always was deficient. Does anyone have any tips for succesfully making one? I really would prefer to NOT go to the grocery store with a ruler. What product have you found is canned in the optimum can size?
