Ruling on CFAA-related case from the Supreme Court of the United States.

This is the text of the ruling on supremecourt.gov in PDF format.

Ars Technica has an article on it and Lessig tweeted about how it relates to the persecution of Aaron Swartz. The article goes on to explain more, and it seems as if this case might change some things in a big way. We'll see.

The TL;DR of it is that a cop (Van Buren) took fought his CFAA conviction and... won? This might upend a lot of the applications of CFAA. I'm not a lawyer, and you'd be an idiot to construe anything I say as legal advice or valid legal commentary, but based onthis old EFF post it may weaken the ability criminalize someone for violating Terms of Service. EPIC points out some unresolved issues.

Reuters has a simpler version of it too, and it sounds like some strange motivations (detailed a bit here on oyez.org) were involved but who am I to judge? Not the Supreme Court.

And if that's not enough, there are some more legal details of the case on scotusblog.
