Is Responder outdated?

I’m using Responder, and trying to capture hashes on my network, yet nothing comes up. I waited like 5 minutes. I tried so many configurations. I even switched my wireless adapter to monitor mode. It just doesn’t work. I’m doing this on a lab from a book called Gray Hat Hacking Fifth Edition.

Will just logging into an email address, without opening any emails, trigger a malware bug?

My friends phone was hacked and she logged into her email on my laptop to change her password. Now she is concerned my laptop may be hacked too.

Simply, can just logging into an email address (@yahoo) trigger a bug or malware to be installed on the device?
