MGNREGA was enacted in 2005 to provide a legal guarantee of at least 100 days of wage employment per financial year to rural households for unskilled manual work.
It aimed at livelihood security, rural assets, and reducing distress migration
Central Government has introduced a new law titled the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Bill, 2025 in Parliament.
If passed, it will replace the existing Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), 2005.
Higher Work Guarantee: Guarantees 125 days of wage employment per rural household annually, up from 100 days under MGNREGA.
Modern Statutory Framework: Aligns rural work with the Vision of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’, focusing on employment + rural development + livelihoods.
Cost Sharing with States
Unlike MGNREGA where the Centre funded 100% of unskilled labour wages:
1. Northeast/Himalayan states & some UTs: 90:10
2.(Centre:State)Other states: 60:40 Centre:State
3. UTs w/o legislature: fully Centre funded
Seasonal Pause Rule: Work may be paused for up to 60 days during peak agricultural seasons (sowing/harvest) to ensure labour availability for farming.
