Voice Suppressed in HSBC

LEUNG Lai Pong, an outsourced staff working for HSBC, participted in the 3rd Sep General Strike was fired because of his speech and action.

On that day, he suggested the employees in the banking sector should set up a labour union and he was interviewed by media to elaborate his idea. On 5th Sep, he was asked to have a meeting with the HR department and later dismissed because the name of HSBC was disclosed when he, being as a staff, took part in political activity.

He said the HR once offered another job with similar benefits and welfare if he agreed to conceal the dismissal. He criticized that white terror has been spreading inside the company and the freedom of expression was suppressed. Hence, he rejected the offer and insisted to facilitate organizing the labour union and protest to the HSBC decision.

HSBC responded to the media inquiry by saying "Mr LEUNG is not their employee, he is employed by a third party service provider for managing the office premises. Therefore they will not comment on his employment contracts"

No More Neutral Position

Hung Fook Tong, the Hong Kong-based Chinese herbal tea and healthy food company, was boycotted by the mainland China after apologies for their employee's action.

Earlier in September, an employee wearing Hung Fook Tong uniform voiced her political stand in the Shum Shui Po store during police operations. She repeatedly shouted "support the police" and some claimed she even shouted "beat up the students". The video became viral on social media and Hung Fook Tong released a statement on Facebook later addressing the incident of "inappropriate speech" and stressed for "courtesy and professional service" for their employees.

However, the incident escalated after Chinese Media Sina wrote "Hung Fook Tong claim support to police is inappropriate" and their products were immediately removed from sale on major online shopping platforms such as JD, TMall and Taobao.

Hung Fook Tong responded by issuing a new statement to apologize for the misunderstanding caused by their earlier statement. They also reiterated their stance in support of "One Country, Two Systems" and supported the government to "restore order and cease violence" on Weibo. However, such statement was not released on their Facebook Page.

Global Support For Hong Kong [2/5]
Kim Eui-Sung reposts open letter from ex-employees, comments, “Shame on you (TVB)!”

On 23 August, #TVB suddenly fired 20 employees on the grounds of business restructuring and streamlining, causing city-wide concerns. An alleged ex-employee subsequently posted on LIHKG late on Sunday (25/8) night, claiming that the dismissed employees were possibly fired because of their support for the Anti-Extradition protests, their participation in protests or rallies, or because they expressed their opinions through the Lennon Wall. They were not informed by their department heads of their dismissal, but instead received the notice directly from HR, which was different from the normal process and hence appears to be an attempt by the company to impose white terror. The ex-employee also mentioned that the firing of the 20 employees is just the beginning, and they believe that TVB will continue to target employees with opposing political stances, and concluded that “CCTVB is a company full of CCTVs (surveillance systems).”

This morning Korean actor Kim Eui-Sung posted a few screenshots on his personal Instagram page, which appeared to be messages from recently dismissed TVB employees, where they voiced their concerns about TVB’s groundless dismissal. Kim posted the screenshots to spread awareness on the issue, and commented, “Shame on you (TVB)!”

[How China treat the tycoon Li Ka Shing part 1/5]

15 SEP
Hong Kong District National People's Congress representative Stanley Ng Chau-pei today published a post on Facebook to “target” Li Ka Shing. He said that "black rioters" having heard Li’s remarks would be more "violent towards police, evil to good people"; and with sarcasm saying Li "investing in the future masters" was indeed very cost-effective; at the same time, also implied that Li did not have to care about any rumors or criticisms due to his social status, "He certainly pays no heed to the Central Political and Legal Committee as well!” He added two pictures to the post, one of which was Li’s appearance matched with a cockroach body, and the words "King of the cockroaches” are printed on the pictures.

Michael Hui Wah-kit, vice president of the Hong Kong China Import and Export Chamber of Commerce, also published a post on Facebook about Li, saying " The one who said he cared the young people. Oh, I must have misunderstood, you said that the government and the community should forgive them, not yourself, because you are so busy, too busy with picking melons..."

“It is the best expression of the evilness of the extradition bill that the Chinese Authority has the absolute control. It makes decisions based on the stand instead of evidence and you have no opportunity to defend yourself,” says Karma. She felt the freedom in CX was lost.

“The anti-ELAB protest has unveiled injustice, unfairness and influence from China,” she says. When asked about the future of CX, she answers sadly and earnestly "Her future, could depends on what the future that China let her have."
