HK Official: US sanctions are "barbaric"
On August 7, the US Treasury sanctioned 11 Hong Kong and CCP officers, including CE Carrie Lam and Secretary for Security Lee Ka-chiu.
Hong Kong Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Edward Yau criticised the sanction as “unreasonable”, that it “reflects a double standard”, and it was a “way to violently intervene a country or place”. Regarding the ban of transaction between US corporations and TikTok, he claimed that this showed the US is not willing to admit its wrongdoings. He added that the international society will not be convinced that such sanctions are reasonable.
The sanction documents revealed personal information like the addresses and ID card numbers of sanctioned officers. Yau criticised that this was “uncivilised” and “barbaric” to target particular persons.
Yau stressed that the Hong Kong SAR Government will review the sanctions and devise a response plan to protect its "core values".
