Holocaust historian: "cockroaches" and "dogs" are both derogatory but different in degree of negativity

If Hong Kong aspires to be an international city, it has to respect world history. The so-called “best in Asia” Hong Kong police force do not seem to have learnt from significant lessons in world history.

Nearly three years ago, in the Beating of Ken Tsang case, seven police officers were jailed for beating up protestor Ken Tsang during the Umbrella Movement. This led to a protest by tens of thousands of police officers during which a police officer drew an analogy between the difficult situations they encountered and the Nazi persecution the Jews faced. Consequently, both the German and the Israeli consulates criticised such analogy as inappropriate.

Hong Kong Police Force Identification Numbers originated from 1856 corruption case

//The “shoulder number” [also known as Force Identification Number (FIN)] found on the uniforms of Hong Kong Police Force officers originated from a court case involving gambling and corruption. At the time, corruption permeated the Hong Kong Police Force.

//Anstey found that the Chinese gamblers in the case could not lodge a complaint or testify in court as they did not understand English. As such, they did not know the name of the police officer who abused his power. The presiding judge, Chief Justice J.W. Hulme, took Anstey’s advice and informed the Commissioner of Police that from 1857 onwards, all police officers must have their FIN pinned on their uniforms so civilians could identify them for complaints.

Primary school teacher accused of teaching the Opium War incorrectly
DAB urges the government to follow up on teaching material standards and disciplinary measures

(03 May)Legislators Elizabeth Quat, Wilson Or Chong-shing, Steven Ho Chun-yin and Holden Chow Ho-ding of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) wrote to the Legislative Council's Panel on Education today. Their letter requested that the government modify its meeting agenda to follow up on teaching material standards,
methods of maintaining pedagogy standards in teachers, disciplinary measures for confirmed professional misconduct,
etc.to prevent teachers from using education to poison students' minds.

The letter stated that the DAB recently received numerous complaints that a general studies teacher from the Sik Sik Yuen-sponsored Ho Lap Primary School deliberately distorted historical accounts. The alleged teacher falsely claimed that "Britain sent troops against China to ban smoking". The DAB also mentioned that the internet circulated information of a Primary 2 General Studies textbook. "Longman General Studies Children Look at History 2C" content was purportedly biased and lacking in positive case studies of Mainland China. It had deliberate exaggerations of the differences between the two places [Hong Kong and the Mainland].

Education Bureau criticises HKDSE controversial question on
History paper

A question from 2020 HKDSE History paper 1 was exceptionally controversial which students were asked to explain whether they agree “during 1900-1945, Japan brought more benefits than harm to China” with reference to the sources and students' own knowledge. Many pro-China media and the mainland official media censured it. Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted on Facebook to comment on this issue, stating that education in Hong Kong should be supervised.

The Education Bureau issued a statement stating that there might be “extremely one-sided” data in this year’s HKDSE history exam paper, as the question was a leading one, which may lead candidates to reach a biased conclusion, seriously hurting the feelings and dignity of the Chinese people who suffered great pain during the Japanese invasion of China. EDB expressed its regret for allowing such kind of question to appear in a public exam, and condemned related bodies. They also demanded HKEAA to follow up on this, explain the situation and review the existing question-setting mechanism.
