Protest Against Construction of Crematorium in Southern China

(29 Nov) In Huazhou City, Guangdong Province, members of the public complained to the media yesterday (28 Nov), criticising the government for failing to take residents’ health into account by insisting on constructing a new funeral parlour and crematorium at Wenlou Town.

The government attempted to resume the land from local people in the name of building a cultural and ecological park
. It announced the project on one of its websites from 15 to 25 November for ten days. Not until 24 November, people were told that a crematorium would be built. When the news broke, many locals opposed strongly. But in order to prevent them from protesting together, the government sent a thousand police and security officers to the site, and threatened “If any person dares to comment on this subject, he/she will be caught at once”.

But people resisted. They even planned to march to the government building to secure their rights. The government decided to send riot police to Wenlou Town, who then blocked all major roads and prohibited any person or vehicle to pass. A resident said that a 3km long stream of police carriers was formed, which further intensified the conflict. Another resident said that a police car was turned upside down, “The police have fired, and it worsens the situation quickly”.

It is clear from a video footage that tear gas was fired, and riot police beat people harshly and dragged them on the ground. Many were injured and hospitalised as a result. The locals accused the government of deception, “The project is so large that it will certainly affect all people in the surroundings, but it was announced only on one government website. Most people are kept in the dark”. Police officers have combined a carrot-and-stick approach with capturing and interrogating to force the locals to submit. As early as in 2014, at Ligang Town within Huazhou City, the construction of a funeral parlour sparked huge public opposition, which led the government to suspend the project eventually.

Guangdong Government Withdraws the Plan to Build Crematoria after Violent Confrontations

Previous report: https://t.me/guardiansofhongkong/12492

(30 Nov) The protest went violent and the police deployed water cannon vehicle, fired teargas, and beaten citizens with batons. Multiple injuries were reported.

The Huazhou Government announced in the statement that due to different opinions towards the new "ecological park", the local government decided to further consult public opinions and suspend the construction.

It also added that any activities jeopardising public safety and security will be punished severely according to the law.

But the statement did not contain an official document serial number. People in Huazhou are still highly alert of the government’s next action.

Arrestee Dragged, Beaten and Intimidated by Police

Mass police-protestor confrontations erupted with the Siege of PolyU, with many arrested and charged with rioting. 30 were taken to the court, and were granted bail under conditions including curfew and grounding.

Among the defendants, some wore neckbands and bandages. The solicitor explained that these had been caused by unreasonable violence from the police.

In one case, although the arrestee hadn't resisted after being subudued, she was dragged by the officers and was beaten senseless with batons on her hindbrain. She had repeatedly asked for medical treatment, but the surgery was delayed for 7 hours. Bruises and bone fractures could be found after that.

The solicitor further pointed out, that when the arresstee was taking a rest in the gynaecology ward after surgery, a policeman rushed in to take the girl back to the police station, despite demands of the medical staff to leave the girl alone. The police, however, shouted at the staff, "She is a patient. How would we mess with her?" In spite of the promise, she had been taken to Shau Mau Ping Police Station, where she was further intimidated by officers. One policeman even asked her, "have you been raped before?". He added, "the raping room is just opposite."

Reporters Got Shot in Head; Expert Suggests Using Skateboard Helmets and Bike Helmets for Protection

A video showing a reporter got shot at the helmet during the conflict at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University has been circulating on Internet. If he was not equipped with a helmet, or was only wearing a yellow helmet commonly used in construction site, the consequences could be severe.

An experienced helmet manufacturer contacted the editor, warning students of the insufficient protection of the yellow helmets. He suggested skateboard helmets and bike helmets as the ones with acceptable protection level, like the skateboard helmet used by the reporter in the video.
