Citizens sing outside Detention Centre on Christmas Eve in support of arrested protestors

For four hours non-stop in Lai Chi Kok, about 300 people shouted slogans, sang Christmas songs, and shon flashlights on their phones, hoping to send some Christmas cheer to those being held inside the detention centre.

Citizens filled the sidewalk outside the facility. One of them expressed hope that their songs can pierce through the facility’s iron walls, let those inside feel the warmth of Christmas, and let them know that “there are people out here supporting them.”

From Children's Literature to Bible and Qu'ran: China Imposes Communist Party Wordview Outside China - Part 1

"Robinson Crusoe among books purged of Christian references in China crackdown on children's classics"

Telegraph, December 24, 2019

//China has stripped literary children's classics in elementary school textbooks of all references to Christianity, replacing “God” and “Bible,” with secular terms, such as “good heaven” and “several books.”

The story of Daniel Defoe’s swashbuckling traveller Robinson Crusoe reads “several Portuguese books,” rather than “the Bible and prayer books.”

A line in The Little Match Girl, whose title character sells matchbooks in the wintry cold, by Hans Christian Andersen, now says: “When a star falls, a person will leave the world,” altering the latter half of the sentence, which previously read, “the spirit resides with God.”...//

Pro-democracy Protesters Remind Citizens Not to Indulge in Holidays

Yesterday was Christmas Eve. As the movement continues, some front-line protesters hoped that Hongkongers would not be indulged in the festive atmosphere, and forget the arrested demonstrators. They also hoped that one day they could end the protest and the continuous protests were a means to end the movement. He said he would camp overnight outside the British Consulate General in Hong Kong, to arouse international awareness to the situation in Hong Kong. He added that it was not difficult to sleep on the streets compared to the citizens arrested and detained because of the movement.

Some "Peaceful, rational, non-violent" protesters said they felt guilty when they think of the arrested protestors; and were not in the mood for celebrating Christmas this year. They will respond to online calls for demostration by joining the "Shop with You" action.

“Build a Tree with You” - Neighbours Wishing our Brothers & Sisters Safe

As Christmas is approaching, some citizens organised a "tree-building" activity outside Hang Fa Chun MTR station. Citizens wrote their wishes on Post-it notes and posted them on a banner with slogans, forming the shape of a tree.

The organiser prepared Christmas cards and Post-its for neighbours to write their well wishes. They also provided papers with origami instructions on how to fold Christmas trees, Santa Claus and the Lin pig. Many passers-by wrote their Christmas wishes on the Post-its, including words to encourage Hong Kong people to stay strong, and "we shall meet at the bottom of the pot". Also, some people wished for the safe return of those who have been arrested and detained, while others encouraged the arrestees to "endure till the end".

Parents also showed up with their children to participate in the event, with some wearing face masks. It was a peaceful scene with no riot police in sight.
