Why are Hongkongers Protesting? How difficult has it become?:
Protestors' Stories behind 9.21 Liberate Tuen Mun Rally
3/3

#ProtestorStory

Yuen Long residents expressed discontent over the July 21 gangster attack in Yuen Long, “It’s obvious that the triads were cooperating with the police”

Mr. A and Mr. L, both working in the architecture and logistics industry, were Yuen Long residents. Mr. A criticised the July 21 attack as a “cooperation between the triads and police”. He was not satisfied with the police using the Sheung Wan clash as an excuse. “Why isn’t the police arranging any manpower to guard Yuen Long while they were well aware of the white clads earlier of the day?” questioned Mr. A.

“It’s obvious that the triads and the police had a consensus.” Mr. L said frankly that he will not trust the police anymore as he believed that they were behind the attack.

Chan, an old lady from Sham Shui Po, has been participating in the anti-extradition bill movement. She was also present today at the Liberate Tuen Mun Rally. “Our youngsters have sacrificed too much. Some of them even got injured or arrested. My daughter is a frontline journalist. She told me about her sorrow and frustration after seeing a journalist being hit in the July 21 attack, said Chan. She also expressed her anger as the known suspect Chan Chi-cheung was yet to be arrested. She hope that the police can uphold justice.

Living in Yuen Long, Secondary Six student Ah Hin also joined the anti-extradition movement. He described the police as “only brave enough to point their guns at protestors, but dare not to fight the triads” after seeing two police walked away in the July 21 attack. He said the police using “not in possession of any weapons” as an explanation to let the white clads go was ridiculous. He was scared by the potential attack made by the white clads when returning home from Mong Kok that day, and this has caused him fear of dressing in black. Meanwhile, He wondered if the police will arrest him simply because he is young.

"Hongkongers, Resist!": US flags seen waving in the rally

The rally is to show Hongkongers' support for the US government to pass the Hong Kong Democracy and Human Rights Act.

In the video, the participants of the rally are chanting "Hongkongers, Resist!". The slogan went viral after the Hong Kong government invoked Emergency Powers and bypassed the legislature to forcefully implement the Anti-Mask Law.

"Hongkongers, Resist" also suggests the urgency of Hong Kong situation, as freedoms and rights are further eroded by the authorities.

Missing Parts and Inconsistent Timestamps: Public suspected the CCTV Footage was Tampered with

The 15-year-old girl surnamed Chan whose body was discovered floating in the sea near Tseung Kwan O last month was a student from Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI).

Rumour has it that her death could be related to her participation in the recent protests. Today (Oct 14) hundreds of people demanded her school to release full CCTV footages. The school promised to do so, but only showed two footages in the end.

The school used the first clip to show that Chan went missing at around 7pm, as she was seen near the school's car park; however, some students spotted inconsistencies with the timestamp, and suspected the footage was edited.

The school used to second footage to suggest that Chan might have disappeared at around 6pm, when she entered the lift on campus; however, the school did not disclosed the part with the girl exiting the lift. This triggered discontent among students.

Moreover, police claimed that the girl put her belongings back to school, then walk barefoot to the Waterfront Promenade. The school did not provide any video to prove this. Students were dissatisfied about the school's refusal to release all the footages involved.

Surveys by The Economist and Financial Times tells a completely different story about the Chinese' views towards China

According to a survey by The Economist, people in China have the highest level of trust (86%) in their government which is almost a two fold to the global average.

However, according to a confidential poll by Financial Times UK, the people of China would like to move out of China permanently if they had the resources to do so. Over 22% of Chinese citizens in the top tier city wanted to leave China permanently. 36% of the people with an annual household income over RMB 300k indicated their wish to live abroad permanently.

What are they telling us?

The writer suggested four possible reasons: fault in statistics, fault in the survey, fault when answering or fault of human bodies(actions being too sincere)
