Man sentenced 3 months in jail after attacking Pro-demoracy Activist, Magistrate, "He showed his love to society."
An eighty-year-old man had admitted to attacking pro-democracy activist 'long hair' Leung Kwok-hung in April 2020, claiming that he had been "enforcing justice for God", "punishing Leung and let him know he is not welcomed" and "Joshua Wong and Ted Hui will die, sooner or later." On Oct 14, he was sentenced to jail for 3 months and 6 days.
Magistrate Cheang Kei Hong had praised the man for "the love he has shown towards Hong Kong", and believed that he committed the crime because of differences in political opinions.
In the past, Cheang has convicted a person for owning a bag of wire tire and gave the person a sentence of 5 and a half months while refusing to grant bail. Another person in possession of 2 jars of spray paint was sentenced by Cheang to a 5 and a half month imprisonment.

On October 14, 2020, Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping attended the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone.
The event was also attended by Hong Kong's chief executive Carrie Lam and some senior government officials from Hong Kong. Lam had postponed the annual police address which was originally scheduled around this time.
In his speech, Xi reiterated thst the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area project is crucial to the country’s development, and Shenzhen is the engine of this project. He hoped to speed up the establishment of railways around the Bay Area, and the integration in workers and logistics between the areas. He also mentioned that the establishment of the Bay Area can attract youngsters from Hong Kong and Macau to study, work, or reside there, so to initiate "in-depth communications" with youngsters from China and "be more united with the country".
During Xi’s speech, Hong Kong officials like Paul Chan, Teresa Cheng, John Lee and Eric Tsang were seen taking notes diligently.
Xi coughed around 4 times during 10 minutes in his 50-minute speech, but those shots were removed by the live broadcast handled by Chinese state media. Xi did not wear a mask.

South Korean K-pop boy band BangTan Sonyeondan (BTS) has gained an award for their efforts to promote South Korea-US relations. However, their award-winning speech, relevant to the Korean War, caused dissatisfaction among Chinese netizens and being sniped, such as claiming not to buy the endorsed products. BTS supporters, on the other hand, fought back on social networking sites. A netizen said, “thanks to the 50 Cent Army and the Little Pink, Korea has become anti-communist now!" Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian then showed kindness, saying that "promoting friendship should be our (China and Korea) common pursuit". The Global Times also deleted its reports criticizing BTS. The Director of the Military Affairs Department of South Korea, Moo Jung-woo, responded yesterday (13 October) that the accusations made by Chinese netizens were "uncomfortable." The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea also stated that it would remain concerned about the situation.
Earlier, BTS gained the “James A. Van Fleet Award”. A member mentioned in their speeches that "we will always remember the painful history of our two countries and the countless sacrifices made by men and women". As a result, the Chinese netizens criticized BTS for not respecting the Chinese martyrs and not understanding the history of the anti-American war effort.
Global Times published a report on Monday (12 October), stating that "we cannot tolerate anything that involves our national dignity”. Chinese netizens urged not to purchase any BTS-endorsed product. Subsequently, a South Korean company Samsung removed the BTS-endorsed products from its Chinese online stores, and a manufacturer Hyundai and a sports brand FILA also removed BTS-relevant posts from their Chinese social media pages.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Canada and China. At a press conference on 14 October, Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau criticized China for its “coercive diplomacy,” citing China’s arbitrary arrest of two Canadians and other foreign citizens. Trudeau said this kind of diplomacy is bound to fail and that China’s oppression of Hongkongers and detainment of the Uyghurs will only backfire.
Being the world’s second-largest economy, Trudeau noted, China has a significant economic impact on other countries. He said while Canada wishes to continue trading with China, Canadians will not stay silent on its human rights issues and will make every effort to work with their allies. Trudeau stated that Canada is attentive to human rights conditions in Hong Kong and Xinjiang and will cooperate with countries sharing its values. The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) re-elected some of its members. China, Russia, Pakistan and Cuba were elected, with China receiving 20% fewer votes than the 2016 election. Saudi Arabia was not elected.
The UNHRC is composed of 47 member states, with 15 seats re-elected from 5 regions for a three-year term starting January 2021. All regions except the Asia-Pacific region elected their members unopposed, examples being Russia and Cuba.
In the Asia-Pacific region, five nations competed for four spots, which were won by China, Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Nepal. China received 139 votes, 20% less than when it was elected in 2016. Pakistan gained 169 votes, Uzbekistan 169, Nepal 150. Saudi Arabia, which had 152 votes in 2016, lost with only 90 votes this time.
