The $3bn bargain: how China dominates Pacific mining, logging and fishing

Guardian analysis of trade data has revealed that China received more than half the total tonnes of seafood, wood and minerals exported from the region in 2019, a haul worth $3.3bn that has been described by experts as ā€œstaggering in magnitudeā€.

The countryā€™s mass extraction of resources comes as China has deepened its connections with governments across the region, amid a soft power push that sees it rivalling the influence of the US and Australia in the Pacific.

China took more by weight of these resources from the Pacific than the next 10 countries combined, with experts saying China ā€œwould easily outstripā€ other countries, including Australia, when it comes to ā€œgross environmental impact of its extractive industriesā€.

Covid: Wuhan lab leak is ā€˜feasibleā€™, say British spies

British intelligence agencies now believe it is ā€œfeasibleā€ that the global pandemic began with a coronavirus leak from a Chinese research laboratory.

In a significant sharpening of tension with Beijing, they are investigating a possible leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which Beijing angrily insists was not the source of the virus that has caused more than 3.5 million deaths and is still raging globally.

#China, #Russia Again Veto UN Statement on #Myanmar Conflict

// On May 30, 2022, Russia and China once again wielded their vetoes to forestall the release of a United Nations Security Council (#UNSC) resolution expressing its concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis in Myanmar.

The two nationsā€™ delegations reportedly objected to the wording of the statement
[...] authored by the United Kingdomā€™s delegation, the statement expressed its concern at the violence and serious humanitarian situation in Myanmar, 16 months on from the February 2021 coup that overthrew the government led by Aung San Suu Kyi. It also expressed misgivings about the ā€œlimited progressā€ on the implementation of ASEANā€™s Five-Point Consensus peace plan.

According to other reports, the delegations from the U.K. and China blamed each other for the failure of the day-long negotiations. For the U.K. officials, Beijing was asking for ā€œtoo much,ā€ which led to the collapse of the negotiations, according to AFP. One of the sticking points for the Chinese delegation was the use of the word ā€œlimitedā€ to refer to the progress on ASEANā€™s Five-Point Consensus, which it suggested replacing with the word ā€œslow.ā€ A spokeswoman told AFP that Chinaā€™s proposed wording was ā€œfactual but less condescending,ā€ adding that ā€œitā€™s a real shameā€ that there was no agreement.//
