Hong Kong Crackdown Is an Early Test for Biden

Hong Kong Crackdown Is an Early Test for Biden

In the beginning of this year, a thousand police officers armed with China’s tough new national security law arrested dozens of opposition legislators, lawyers and activists, who had organized and participated in an unofficial “primary” vote to select candidates for the 70-seat Legislative Council.

One minute after President Biden took office, China announced sanctions against 28 departing and former Trump administration officials, including Mr. Pompeo declaring that China's policies against Muslims in its Xinjiang region constitute a “genocide” and “crimes against humanity.”

Hong Kong is intolerable to the Chinese Communists not only as a gadfly, but as a standing rebuttal to Mr. Xi’s illiberal ideology.

Whatever signal China may have been trying to send by its crackdown on dissenters, the Biden administration should continue to stand with the people of Hong Kong.

US State Department Voices Concern over China’s Threats to Taiwan and Calls for Pressure to Cease, Reaffirms Commitment to Help Maintain Taiwan’s Self-defence Capabilities

The US State Department has voiced its concerns over Chinese’s intimidation against Taiwan and its other neighbours. In a 23 January press release, it urges Beijing to “cease its military, diplomatic, and economic pressure against Taiwan and instead engage in meaningful dialogue with Taiwan’s democratically elected representatives”. The press release is the first statement on China-Taiwan relations from the State Department since Biden took office.

China-Taiwan relations have been tense with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) sending one Yunshuji-8 maritime patrol aircraft, eight Xian H-6K jet bomber, and four Shenyang J-16 strike fighter into Taiwan’s Southwestern Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) on 23 January alone. Dubbed “the largest intrusion of the year” by Taiwan media, the operation was met with radio warnings from air patrols of Taiwan’s defence ministry and tracked by anti-aircraft missile systems.

In the press release, titled “PRC Military Pressure Against Taiwan Threatens Regional Peace and Stability”, State Department spokesperson Ned Price stresses that the US will work with its friends and allies to “advance [their] shared prosperity, security, and values in the Indo-Pacific region”, which include “deepening [their] ties with democratic Taiwan”.

180 International Human Rights Organisations Sign Open Letter Calling on Countries to Boycott 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics

The Beijing Winter Olympics are scheduled to begin in February next year. An international coalition of 180 human rights organisations from around the world issued an open letter on Wednesday (Feb. 3) calling on leaders to boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics and pay attention to the human rights situation in China.

The coalition of 180 human rights organisations, includes the World Uyghur Congress and the International Tibet Network. In an open letter, they said that since Beijing was awarded the Games in 2015, " "the situation has deteriorated drastically as President Xi Jinping has unleashed an unrelenting crackdown on basic freedom and human rights". They also accused the IOC of refusing to take action on Beijing's human rights situation and called on leaders to boycott the Beijing Winter Games and not encourage China's reckless exploitation of human rights and dissidents' suppression.

The open letter also addressed the situation in Hong Kong, Tibet, Xinjiang, and Inner Mongolia, including the arrest of many pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong and the political persecution of Tibetans and Uyghurs.

Revolution of Our Times Wins "Most Influential" & "Best Cultural Image" Awards at FIPADOC Festival in France

Revolution of Our Times, a documentary banned in Hong Kong chronicling the 2019 Anti-ELAB Movement, has won two awards at the 2022 FIPADOC International Documentary Festival in France, in the catagories of "Most influential" and "Best Cultural Image".

This is the second time the film has won an international award, after taking home the Best Documentary at Taiwan's Golden Horse Film Festival in November last year.

Documentaries from Germany, France, and Belgium were also nominated at the FIPADOC awards, which honor films that inspire social justice, environmentalism, and human rights. The annual festival specializes in non-fiction films, and is now in its 34th year, having first been held in Cannes, France in 1987.

Since its premiere at Cannes Film Festival, every showing of "Revolution of Our Times" has attracted public attention and filled seats at film festivals around the world.

Director #KiwiChow, who resides in Hong Kong, had previously stated that he does not have a copy of the film on hand. The film is scheduled to be screened in Taiwan's theatres on February 25. It will be the first territory where the film is shown in public.

The documentary shows multiple angles of the Anti-ELAB protests from seven different iconic groups in the movement: former reporter turned activist #GwynethHo, who is now held in custody; professor #BennyTai; social workers; the seniors group #ProtectOurChildren; volunteer drivers; first aiders; university students turned frontline protesters; and high school students who left behind their wills before going out to fight.

The film weaves their stories together with now-classic images of the movement, and paints a realistic portrait of Hong Kong's fight for freedom and democracy.

Scott Morrison's WeChat account suspected of being hacked, MPs call for boycott over election interference

Australian media reported on Monday (24th January) that Prime Minister Scott Morrison's WeChat official account was suspected of being hacked and turned into a pro-Beijing account “Aohua Xinshenghuo (Australian Chinese New Life)”. His WeChat team has been unable to log in since the beginning of the year. Its 76,000 followers were notified to quit following old accounts. Some parliamentarians believe this is China's interference in Australia's internal affairs in an election year, and call on Australian politicians to boycott WeChat.

The abnormality of Morrison's WeChat public account was first reported by The Daily Telegraph. It was pointed out that earlier this month, Morrison's official WeChat account had been renamed “Aohua Xinshenghuo” and his profile picture had been changed. The account description was now "providing life information for overseas Chinese in Australia".
