Professor claims HK Government may train disciplined offiers in coronavirus test sampling

With the outbreak of the Wuhan Pneumonia hitting the one-year -mark, most of the specimen sampling works in #HongKong have sofar been conducted by medical personnel.

Yet Prof. David SC Hui, Professor of Respiratory Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong,
revealed in his interview with the #RTHK, that the government's #FoodandHealthBureau was exploring the possibilities of temporarily transferring personnel from the Immigration Department and the Customs and Excise Department for specimen #sampling training work.

He then clarified later, that the transfer was mainly aimed to help with case tracing, instead of sampling.

Hui said, it was the most ideal to have medical personnel handling specimen sampling work at the moment. It was believed the services were mainly in charge of case tracing work, and that the chances of them being involved in specimen sampling ‘are slim’. But he added, the possibility of the services being trained to handle specimen sampling should not be eliminated under a huge outbreak, in which private laboratory and government sampling services reached saturation.

China subjects some travelers to anal swabs, angering foreign governments.

China is requiring some travelers arriving from overseas to receive an invasive anal swab test as part of its coronavirus containment measures, a move that has outraged and shocked several foreign governments.

It is not clear how many such swabs have been administered or who is subject to them. Chinese state media has acknowledge that some arrivals to cities including Beijing and Shanghai are required to take the tests, though the reports said the requirements might vary depending on whether the travelers were deemed to be high-risk.

Japanese officials had formally asked China to exempt Japanese citizens from the test, adding that some who had received it complained of “psychological distress.” And the United States State Department last month said it had registered a protest with the Chinese government after some of its diplomats were forced to undergo anal swabs, though Chinese officials denied that.

On the evening of April 13, 2021, the Hong Kong authorities announced again what chief executive Carrie Lam called an ambush-style lockdown. The affected residential building is Block 2 of #LidoGarden in #ShamTseng.

The government gazetted the notice at around 8pm. Police cordoned off the residential area and staff from the health authorities set up testing booths that are run by the China-owned company #BGI. All residents are required to undergo a #covid19 test.

The lockdown is expected to end on the morning of the next day.
