Chinese embassy in UK 'firmly opposes' BBC's reporting on 'Chinese Taipei' Olympic team -statement

The Chinese embassy in the UK "firmly opposes" the BBC's reporting on the participation of Taiwan's "Chinese Taipei" team in the Olympics, it said in a statement on Monday.

"There is only one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory, and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China," the embassy said.

[Union Disbanded]
#EducationBureau Chief Calls Hong Kong Teachers to "Reconsider" If the Pro-democracy Union Represents Themselves

[Latest Update: The Hong Kong Professional Teachers' Union (
#HKPTU) announced its disbandment at around 16:30 on August 10, 2021, following attacks from Beijing and Hong Kong government]

Kevin Yeung, the Hong Kong SAR Government's Secretary of Education, sent a letter to all Hong Kong teachers, calling on "careful consideration" of speech and actions of the Hong Kong Professional Teachers' Union (#HKPTU) in recent years, and pondering over whether the union can "represent" themselves.

He also claimed that all information, services, and enquiries "could be provided" by other organisations.

The HKPTU currently consists of 95,000 members, and the membership needs to be renewed every year. Each membership is valid from September 1 to August 31.

The letter from Yeung was titled "Adhering the Profession and Pursuing the Truth Together". The whole letter targets the HKPTU. He said that education had been "robbed" for years, some organisations "performed politics in the name of the educational profession", and that they "did not stop the violation of the teaching profession and the disregard for the well-being of students". He claimed that the HKPTU "directly or indirectly pushes teachers into illegal activities, being arrested and imprisoned".

China vows countermeasures on US arms sales to Taiwan

The Chinese foreign ministry has called on the US to scrap an arms deal with Taiwan, vowing to take proper and necessary countermeasures. The 5.8 billion Hong Kong dollar sale, which includes self-propelled artillery, has been approved by the US state department.

Citing the Taiwan Relations Act, the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency said the deal is in line with the US’ national economic and security interests by enabling the continuous modernization of Taiwan’s military and ensuring that it has a reliable defence capability. The deal, it said, will help improve Taiwan’s security and maintain political stability, military balance, and economic progress in the region.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry thanked the US government for continuing to uphold the Taiwan Relations Act and its six commitments to the security of Taiwan. It noted that in face of the mainland’s continued military expansion and provocations, the government of Taiwan will remain unwavering in strengthening defence, safeguarding its people’s lives and properties, and their democratic way of life. The ministry added that Taiwan will contribute to the long-term peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region by closely cooperating with the US to maintain security in the Taiwan Strait.

Canada warns citizens about possible exit bans in Hong Kong

Canada warned its citizens on Thursday (Aug 5) that the Hong Kong authorities can prevent people leaving the city under a new law that has raised fears of Chinese mainland-style exit bans.

The law, granting the immigration chief powers to bar people from boarding planes to and from the city, came into effect on Sunday.

"Under this amendment, individuals, including foreigners, might be unable to leave the territory," Canada's travel advisory Twitter account said.

China’s Corporate Crackdown Is Just Getting Started. Signs Point to More Tumult Ahead.

In recent months, China has blown up what would have been the world's largest initial public offering, launched probes into some of its biggest technology companies, and wiped out more than $1 trillion in market value while investors scramble for cover.

There are many signs it isn't over yet.

Investors, analysts and company executives believe the government is just getting started in its push to realign the relationship between private business and the state, with a goal of ensuring companies do more to serve the Communist Party's economic, social and national-security concerns.
