Hongkongers Rebuild Article Archives of Apple Daily and Stand News

Since the shutdown of #AppleDaily and #StandNews last year, a group of Hong Kong netizens had been hard at work building a platform to preserve their articles, so that they may once again see the light of day.

The article archives are now viewable online: https://collection.news/

The two Hong Kong news media companies, particularly Apple Daily with its 26-year history, had produced well over 2 million articles. Over a 10-month period, the Collection.News team rebuilt the archives of 2,375,868 text articles and 3,046,000 photos, and hosted them online using their own funds.

The archive's development team describes themselves as a group of Hongkongers who wish to preserve the city's history. They declare no affiliations with any news media groups. As the threat of National Security Law continues to loom over the city, the team found it necessary to operate anonymously, and does not accept donations. They had made their software open source, so that in case their website was shut down due to unforeseen circumstances, there would still be hope that the archives could be rebuilt once again.

The website's Chinese name 果靈 ("Spirit of Fruits") draws inspiration from the writings of 20th century philosopher Tang Chun-i. The team wishes to remind #Hongkongers that "we are not flowers and fruits that had lost our roots. Our spirit can take root everywhere, and ought to sprout in every heart."

"Though Apple Daily had died, we wish for everyone to own a little Apple seedling," they wrote on their website.

Why the days of Hong Kong’s Foreign Correspondents’ Club may be numbered

//I fear the days of the FCC itself are numbered. ...//

// The end could happen suddenly, given the news on Monday [Ed. April 25] that the club had cancelled its annual Human Rights Press Awards because of the “red lines” China has drawn on what is permissible to be published and the club’s fear the awards could inadvertently cross into dangerous territory for the club, its members, and participants in the awards. //

Pro-democracy political cartoonist announces departure from Hong Kong citing ‘great mental stress’

The comic artist, #AhTo, who has drawn satirical cartoons about local politics for 11 years, made the announcement on social media.

He shared a drawing of one of his iconic characters standing in front of what appeared to be the London cityscape and said he left because he “wanted to continue creating for HK.”

"Staying in HK to produce political cartoon [causes] great mental stress. [I] have no alternative but to leave,” the artist wrote on Facebook, without stating his destination.

Ah To said he had considered giving up on political cartoons in 2017 when HK’s social movement was “at low tide.” He also thought about changing the theme of his work last year.

But he deemed that HK “needed political cartoons,” and said he wanted to “persist” by remotely creating cartoons for his home city.

Pro-Beijing Legislator Proposes Mandatory Uniformed Groups Membership for HK Youths

The Hong Kong authorities had been heavily promoting national security through the city's youth uniformed groups. A legislative councilor posed a written question, requesting that the government require all students to join at least one uniformed group.

The Home Affairs Bureau replied that these groups are only an extracurricular activity, and schools generally allow students to choose whether to join.

The Bureau also reported the membership numbers of 11 youth uniformed groups that receive sponsorship from the government. 8 of these groups had seen their numbers fall in the past four years.

The Scouts Association of Hong Kong - whose Chief Scout is Chief Executive Carrie Lam - saw the largest drop of 4941 members, with 2936 in the past year alone. The Hong Kong Girl Guides Association, whose president is Regina Leung, the wife of former CE Leung Chun-Ying, also lost 2313 members.

Andrew Lam Siu-lo, the legislator who posed the question, belongs to the Election Committee constituency, which was newly created under the 2021 electoral changes imposed by Beijing in order to ensure only "patriots" govern Hong Kong.

Hong Kong small-circle leadership race: Meet John Lee – the ex-police officer #Beijing trusts

[On May 8, 2022, #JohnLee, the sole candidate in the election, was selected by an election committee with 1,000 or so members to be the next Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR, after the end of #CarrieLam's term. Lee received 1,416 votes to become the political leader of a city of more than seven million people. Read: https://hongkongfp.com/2022/05/08/breaking-sole-candidate-john-lee-selected-as-hong-kongs-next-leader/]

//As a former beat cop who rose to become Hong Kong’s security chief, John Lee is the one person China’s leaders trust to run the city as their loyal lieutenant, analysts and insiders say.

Lee, 64, is expected to be anointed Hong Kong’s next chief executive by a small committee on Sunday, the culmination of a choreographed, Beijing-blessed race with no other candidates...

It also places a security official in the city’s top job for the first time, a man who played a key role in the suppression of huge democracy protests and Beijing’s subsequent political crackdown.

Insiders say Lee’s unwavering commitment to that role won China’s confidence at a time when other Hong Kong elite were seen as insufficiently loyal or competent...

Given his security background, it seems unlikely Lee — already sanctioned by the United States — will reverse Beijing’s campaign against dissent.

Where he will enter less familiar territory is the world of business, an area where Hong Kong is suffering...//

Ying-shih YU: now is the best time to fight for democracy in Hong Kong.

The Liberty Times, a Taiwanese publisher continued posting footages and manuscripts of the last interviews conducted by Hong Kong press of the Chinese #Historian Ying-shih Yu.

The last episode mentioned that Yu described Beijing forcefully implementing National Security Law #NationalSecurityLaw in #HongKong ‘an unprecedented incident’, showing the Chinese government had already decided to include Hong Kong in its totalitarian regime.

This episode focused on discussing ‘#PatrioticEducation’. Yu reckoned it was the Chinese Communist regime that the younger generation in Hong Kong despised, and that they still loved China, and were fighting for a democratic, liberal, lawful and rights-protecting China.

He emphasised that ‘now is the best time to fight for democracy in Hong Kong.’

China regulators reportedly meet banks to discuss protecting assets from US sanctions

Chinese regulators held an emergency meeting with domestic and foreign banks last month to discuss protecting trillions of dollars in overseas assets from US-led #sanctions similar to those imposed on Russia, according to a report.

The Financial Times reports the April 22 meeting between representatives from China’s central bank and finance ministry, and executives from all large banks operating in China, was called because Chinese officials are worried similar action could be taken against Beijing in the event of a regional military conflict.

While the officials and attendees did not mention specific scenarios, according to the report, the most likely trigger for international sanctions is thought to be a Chinese invasion of #Taiwan.

“If China attacks Taiwan, decoupling of the Chinese and western economies will be far more severe than [decoupling with] Russia because China’s economic footprint touches every part of the world,” one of the people briefed on the meeting told the Financial Times.

According to the Financial Times report, senior Chinese regulators asked bankers at the meeting what could be done to protect China’s overseas assets, especially its $US3.2 trillion in foreign reserves.

China holds more than $US1 trillion in US Treasury bonds and owns huge amounts of real estate, including major New York office buildings and hotels.

“No one on site could think of a good solution to the problem,” another person briefed on the meeting told the newspaper. “China’s banking system isn’t prepared for a freeze of its dollar assets or exclusion from the Swift messaging system as the US has done to Russia.”

Committee Members Imprisoned: The Dilemma of

Part 1:

On 10 September 2021 at West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts Division 2, after the court clerk read out the charges, #TonyeeChow Hang-tung, who was in the defendant's column, responded with a sonorous voice: "Understood, this is a ridiculous charge." And the court filled with applause from the public gallery.

In this unsolved case, chairman and vice-chairman Li Cheuk-yan, Albert Ho Chun-yan and Tonyee Chow Hang-Tung of the Hong Kong Alliance, who have been rooted in Hong Kong for 32 years, are charged with the crime of “Inciting Subversion of State Power”. And this is the first case of the count in Hong Kong.

On May 21, 1989, the Hong Kong Alliance called on millions of Hong Kong people to take on to the streets to support pro-democracy students in Beijing, and announced the establishment of the organization on the same day. Wen Wei Po called this day “An Important Sign of the Awakening of Hong Kong People”.

After the massacre happened on June 4, all walks of life regardless of party affiliation, published condemnation and joint signatures. Since then, the Hong Kong Alliance has emphasized doing legal things under one country two systems, as in holding candlelight rallies to mourn June 4th, finding out who should be held responsible for the massacre, and guarding the truth of what happened on June 4th.

#SouthKorea’s Intelligence Agency Has Joined NATO’s Cyber Defense Unit; #China Isn’t Happy

//On Thursday, May 5, 2022, South Korea’s spy agency became the first in Asia to join #NATO’s Cyber Defense Group in a move that risks inflaming tensions with regional superpower China.

In response, #HuXiJin, the strident editor of Chinese Communist Party (#CCP) mouthpiece The #GlobalTimes, tweeted that the move was an affront to Beijing and even lays the groundwork for war in Asia. “If South Korea takes a path of turning hostile against its neighbors, the end of this path could be a #Ukraine,” he wrote.

Despite hosting some of the world’s top tech companies, like #LG and #Samsung, South Korea has been a surprising laggard regarding cybercrime and only launched a National Cybersecurity Strategy under the #MoonJaeIn administration in 2018.

This is despite South Korea being the principle target of increasingly frequent cyberattacks from across the DMZ. A crack squad of 6,800 North Korean agents are engaged in fraud, blackmail and online gambling that together generate some $860 million annually, according to the Korea Institute of Liberal Democracy in Seoul. Many attacks originate from inside China.//

China Messaging On Ukraine Shows Support For Russia’s Invasion: U.S. State Department

//China’s uncritical amplification of Kremlin views on #Moscow’s invasion of the #Ukraine demonstrates #Beijing’s support for Russia in the war, the #USStateDepartment said in a statement on May 2, 2022.

“Government officials and state and party media from the People’s Republic of China (#PRC) and the Chinese Communist Party (#CCP) routinely amplify Kremlin propaganda, conspiracy theories, and disinformation,” the statement said.

“This amplification rationalizes President Putin’s unjustified and unprovoked war against Ukraine while undermining trust in the United States and other countries, democratic institutions, and independent media,” the State Department said.

“Using social media platforms banned within the PRC, PRC and CCP media and PRC ‘wolf warrior’ diplomats convey biased Kremlin talking points to audiences in multiple languages and regions across the world. Meanwhile, within the PRC, CCP and state-backed entities censor credible reporting on Russia’s atrocities in Ukraine while blaming #NATO and the United States for #Putin’s brutal war of choice,” the statement said.

“PRC and CCP media and officials’ further uncritical amplification of Moscow’s messaging demonstrates Beijing’s support for Russia,” even though China hasn’t offered its explicit public endorsement or condemnation of Russia’s invasion, the State Department said.//

Committee Members Imprisoned: The Dilemma of #HongKongAlliance and Beginning of the #June4th Debate

[The following article was originally published by #StandNews on September 24, 2021. The news outlet was forced to close down in December that year.]

Part 1:

Part 2:

Today, the Hong Kong Alliance faces a reversal of destiny. In addition to facing interrogation, their venue has also been seized, funds have been frozen, and social media accounts have been asked to be deleted (except for the website "8964Museum" which is independently operated by the curatorial team).

In the past 32 years, whenever the Hong Kong Alliance faced difficulties, they would refer to the contingency plan drawn up in the early years by the deceased chairman Szeto Wah, who once estimated that after the change in sovereignty in 1997, the Hong Kong Alliance would “Bear the Brunt of the Blow, become the target of repression and persecution". Therefore, as early as 1996, the organization had come up with ten contingency measures regarding situations such as deregistration and members being arrested, and listed in detail in the general declaration of the Victoria Park Candlelight Gathering, one of which is as follows:

"The Hong Kong Alliance has been characterized as a ‘Subversive Organization', what should we do? […] We firmly do not accept the characterization of a ‘Subversive Organization', and Hong Kong citizens will not accept it ... If a bad law is to be enacted after 1997 and unreasonable prosecutions are to be proposed, the Hong Kong Alliance would only be the first to bear the brunt of the prosecution, followed by other organizations and individuals, who would also be characterized as “Subversive Organizations" and “Subversives”. This will be marked as a dark age of human rights and freedoms in Hong Kong…”

"The storm that Uncle Wah predicted has finally arrived, just twenty years late." Tsang Kin-Shing, the former standing committee said.

At present, all the current standing members of the Hong Kong Alliance are imprisoned. In the future, the company registration may be removed, and the group members will vote on whether to pass the dissolution at the general meeting on September 25th. The chairman and vice-chairman Li Cheuk-yan and Albert Ho Chun-yan, who are in prison recently, issued a joint open letter pointing out that the best solution for the Hong Kong Alliance is to dissolve voluntarily; another vice-chairman, Tonyee Chow Hang-tung, later sent a letter to member groups calling for their opposition to the dissolution, "I trust their experience and judgment, but I still can't convince myself that voluntary dissolution is a "good option”, let alone a "best solution.”
