Former Hong Kong student leader jailed for 9 months for resisting police and perverting course of justice

Former Hong Kong Baptist University (#HKBU) students’ union president #KeithFong has been jailed for 9 months for resisting police and perverting the course of justice, in a case linked to his purchase of 10 laser pointers during the 2019 protests.

The District Court on April 7 passed sentence on Fong, who has been in custody since early February, 2022 after he was convicted of the two offences.

Judge Douglas Yau rejected the defence’s suggestions of a fine and a suspended sentence, saying only immediate imprisonment could reflect the seriousness of the crimes.

UN boots Russia from UN Human Rights Council over Ukraine invasion

The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on April 7, 2022 calling for Russia to be suspended from the Human Rights Council.

The resolution received a two-thirds majority of those voting in the 193-member Assembly, with 93 nations voting in favour. 58 abstained from the process.

Russia, China, Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Syria, Vietnam, were among the 24 countries voted against.

The meeting marked the resumption of a special emergency session on the war in Ukraine and followed reports of violations committed by Russian forces.

This past weekend, disturbing photos emerged from the city of Bucha, a suburb of the capital, Kyiv, where hundreds of civilian bodies were found in the streets and in mass graves following Russia’s withdrawal from the area.

For Europe, confronting China should begin at home

All eyes may currently be on Russia, but meanwhile, concerns regarding the European Union’s relationship with China continue to mount. From the diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics to confronting China’s economic punishment of Lithuania and tackling its authoritarian model within the multilateral system, the list grows longer by the day. However, it’s important to remember that, just like with Russia, simply achieving a unified EU position on China is not a fait accompli.

VICE News Report on 7.21 Yuen Long Attack is Geo-Blocked in Hong Kong

On March 26, 2022, a video titled "Hong Kong's Organized Crime Societies", was released on the YouTube channel of VICE News, a popular US-based news platform with over 7.6 million subscribers.

Video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARB-z8B7bHs

However, netizens found that the video was "geo-blocked" in Hong Kong. Viewers with a Hong Kong IP address are met with a "video unavailable" message, stating that "the uploader has not made this video available in your country". The video description was also hidden, and its comment section disabled.

The video remains viewable to netizens outside of Asia. Viewers within the blocked region could only access it with a VPN service. It is not yet known whether VICE News chose to block the region, or if the Hong Kong authorities demanded that it did so.

The video covered interviews with victims of Yuen Long attack on July 21, 2019, when hundreds of white-clad gangsters indiscriminately attacked civilians at the Yuen Long MTR train station. Hong Kong police force was accused of colluding with the gangsters in this incident, as they render slow and minimal efforts to respond to the violence.

The geo-blocking is seen as part of the growing, organised online censorship effort following the enactment National Security Law, under which outspoken media outlets such as Apple Daily, Stand News, and Citizen News have been forced to disband or were shut down by authorities. Other documentary videos of the 7.21 incident, including those produced by RTHK, have also been taken offline, raising concerns that history is being concealed in Hong Kong, and memories of the incident are being whitewashed.

Satisfaction with Hong Kong’s press freedom slumps to record low: Survey

On April 1, 2022, the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#HKPORI) published the results of a telephone survey involving 1,004 respondents’ “appraisal of news media.”

Findings revealed record low results since 1997 - only 28% of respondents are satisfied with #PressFreedom in Hong Kong.

The survey also reported a record-high proportion of respondents saying that local news outlets did not utilise their freedom of speech, the highest rate since September 1997.

The overall satisfaction with media outlets’ performance also dropped from 8% (2021) to 2% (2022), a record low since records began in September 1997.

Chris Yeung, former chairperson of the Hong Kong Journalist Association said that the closure of media outlets was “definitely” a factor contributing to people’s dissatisfaction with press freedom.

Huawei is sanctioned by the US with a fall in profit, believing lacking a key factor.

#Mengwenzhou, the deputy chairwoman and CFO of #Huawei, once again showed up at the group performance meeting after returning to #China.

Under the #US sanction on Huawei and the shortage of chips, Huawei's income in the previous year was reduced by almost 30%, to around 637 billion dollars (in RMB, same below). It is the first fall in the revenue since the record was publicised.

Last year's net profit raised by 75.9%, to 113.7 billion dollars, in which, the sale of a smartphone department to a government-led consortium took account of around 57.4 billion dollars. With a subsidy of 2.57 billion dollars from the government, a total of 60.8 billion dollars of other income was recorded, increasing 87 times from the previous year, being the reason for net profit.

With the deduction of the other income, the net profit was slightly higher than 52.9 billion dollars, reduced by almost 20% year-to-year.

According to the data from a market research organisation, Omdia, Huawei shipped 35 million smartphones only, which plunged by 81.6% from the previous year. The market share fell from 14.7% in 2020 to 2.6% in 2021.

Huawei's consumer business resulted in a hit, and the revenue was reduced by 49.6% from last year to 243.4 billion dollars.

Research: Execution by organ procurement and Breaching the dead donor rule in China

In an academic paper published by Australia-based esearchers Matthew P. Robertson and Jacob Lavee in April 2022, the findings strongly suggest that physicians in the People's Republic of China (#PRC) have participated in executions by organ removal, breaching the #DeadDonorRule.

The study applies computational text analysis to conduct a forensic review of 2,838 papers drawn from a dataset of 124,770 Chinese-language transplant publications.

The algorithm searched for evidence of problematic declarations of brain death during organ procurement. The research team finds 71 reports where brain death could not have properly been declared, and these organ donors could only have been prisoners in China.

Hong Kong among the bottom 30% in democracy ranking, having the highest increase in repression of civil
society in 2021

In the "Democracy Report 2022: Autocratization Changing Nature", the V-Dem Institute’s report notes that a new wave of democratization is being seen in 15 countries, while 32 countries suffer a decline in democracy.

The Swedish institute's report highlights that #autocratization has “worsened” in Hong Kong, along with India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Thailand and the Philippines in the Asia-Pacific region in the last decade.

Hong Kong is also among the countries with the highest increases in repression of civil
society. On a 0 to 4 scale, these countries are Afghanistan (–2.6), Hong Kong (–2.2), and Nicaragua (–2.1).

The report points out that governments in all three countries "evidently engage in extensive subjugation of civil society."

On the worldwide level, the report shows that the level of democracy enjoyed by the average global citizen in 2021 is down to 1989 levels. “The last 30 years of democratic advances are now eradicated.”

Exclusive: U.S. calls for 'concrete action' from China on trade deal

U.S. officials called on Monday for "concrete action" from China to make good on its commitment to purchase $200 billion in additional U.S. goods and services in 2020 and 2021 under the "Phase 1" trade deal signed by former President Donald Trump.

The officials said Washington was losing patience with Beijing, which had "not shown real signs" in recent months that it would close the gap in the two-year purchase commitments that expired at the end of 2021.

IPAC : It is absurd that mere applause during a court case can be construed as a seditious act

The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (#IPAC) condemns the arrest of 6 individuals on suspicion of seditious intention to incite hatred, contempt or rebellion against the administration of justice in Hong Kong after applauding during the trial of Chow Hang-tung’s June Fourth memorial incitement case in early 2022.

The individuals arrested include the vice-chairman of the now disbanded Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (#HKCTU), Leo Tang, and citizen journalist Siew Yun-Long (Siu Wan).

The sedition charges were made under Sections 9 and 10 of the Crimes Ordinance – colonial era laws that have been criticised by the UN Human Rights Committee and frequently used by the Hong Kong authorities to crack down on legitimate protest.

The other individuals arrested were citizen observers at the courts who frequently witness political cases.

"Not only are these charges wrong and to be condemned, but they also demonstrate how far the rule of law has deteriorated in Hong Kong," IPAC said in its statement.

IPAC also calls on governments to hold the Chinese and Hong Kong authorities to account for these abuses and appeals for all overseas judges to withdraw from serving on Hong Kong’s Court of Final Appeal in this further undermining of the independence and integrity of Hong Kong’s legal system.

China ‘threatens families to silence Uighur exiles in Britain’

Uighurs in the UK are being intimidated into silence by Chinese authorities as the “long arm” of the repressive regime reaches exiles in Europe, a report has found.

Thousands of members of the minority group who left China to live in western democracies are feared to be censoring themselves out of concern for the safety of their families. Those who dare to speak out about human rights abuses in their home country say they face threats from officials as well as pressure to inform on their expatriate communities.

China Schools Teach Students to "Correctly" Understand Ukraine Crisis; Taiwanese Scholars Warn of CCP Legitimizing Aggression on Taiwan

Schools across China are hosting lesson planning workshops for their teachers, so that they can teach students to "correctly understand" the recent developments in Ukraine.

A notice from Shandong education department noted that these workshops are intended for teachers of "political thinking classes", to help them "correctly understand the principles, position, and line to take" regarding the Ukraine crisis, so that they can "guide the thoughts" of their students.

These courses are hosted by The "Hand-in-Hand Lesson Preparation Center for National Ideological and Political Classes".

Chinese Scholars: Can't Judge Russia-Ukraine crisis as Simply Right or Wrong

In one such workshop in Shanxi, a teacher asked how to educate primary and secondary school students in international relations, and how to answer questions regarding whether Russia's war against Ukraine is justified.

Answering the question was professor Xia Yong-Lin from Xidian University's School of Humanities. He said that the Russia-Ukraine crisis cannot "be judged as simply right or wrong": "under the American-led international order, in an environment [filled with] arrogant hegemony and hysteria without fairness, it is meaningless to get caught up in questions of justice."

Liu Li-Bo, Vice-chair of the School of Maxism at Shaanxi Normal University, emphasized proactively instill thoughts that are in line with mainstream ideology and national policy. "If students in primary and secondary schools were led astray, it's difficult to straighten them up again."

Professor Wang Yong-Zhi Northwest University added that teachers must make the connection with national revival. Teachers must clearly tell students that China is facing the greatest challenge since its economic reform, and the country needs students to have an even greater sense of nationalism and responsibility.

CCP Aims to Legitimize Future Taiwan Invasion, Taiwanese Scholars warns

In Taiwan, Wang Zhi-Sheng, Secretary General of China Asia-Pacific Elite Exchange Association, pointed out two objectives for China's systematic and unified indoctrination of its "truth" of the Ukrainian conflict. For one, they aimed to whitewash Russia's aggression and drum up support in China. The more concerning objective, however, was to portray Russia's situation as being "backed into a corner" before taking military action; this implied that China may also be "backed into a corner" in the future, and become "forced" to use its military against Taiwan.

Lin Xian-Shen, head of the Department of East Asian Studies at National Taiwan Normal University, pointed out that Putin's narrative considers Ukraine to be part of Russia. Similarly, the Chinese Communist Party considered Taiwan to be part of China, and could thus use the same justifications to rally popular support for aggression against Taiwan. If the Chinese people supports Russia's invasion of Ukraine, it would naturally also support a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, he said.
