Hong Kong University forces boarding students to leave dormitories and stops them from protesting

Claiming pandemic-control, at least five tertiary institutions in Hong Kong told dormitory residents to return home.

On February 10, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) told occupants of its student residences to leave in two days’ time by February 12 – 13.

Polytechnic University (#PolyU), Baptist University and City University (#CityU) said they also had plans to “encourage” residents to leave.

The university’s decision has caught many students in surprises, putting them through unnecessary disturbances and therefore, elicited resentment.

In just a few hours after #CUHK’s announcement, over 500 students of the university joined a discussion group on social media, calling to protest the school’s arrangement.

Although these students reiterated that their actions would remain peaceful and they would only attempt to hand in petition letter to the university, the university reacted fervently with tens of uniformed security officers stationed visible at where the students gathered.

The security guards were seen pointing video cameras at protesting students and shouting through loudspeakers for students to leave the site or they might risk violating the COVID-19 gathering restrictions.

WHO unveils new 26-member panel to restart study of the pandemic’s origins

The World Health Organization (WHO) today unveiled a new team to investigate the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Scientific Advisory Group on the Origins of Novel Pathogens (SAGO) will also be tasked with studying the origins of future outbreaks and epidemics and guiding studies of emerging pathogens more generally.

WHO’s proposed list of SAGO members contains 26 researchers from 26 countries, 11 of whom are women. Six members were also part of the international team that traveled to China earlier this year to study the pandemic’s origins with Chinese colleagues. That earlier team’s report had favored a natural origin of SARS-CoV-2, calling a possible leak from a lab in Wuhan, China, “extremely unlikely.” WHO’s director-general later said, however, that it was too early to rule out this hypothesis.

“Resist till the end”: Hong Kong Student Union vow to carry on the fight for student rights and academic freedom

The Student Development Services of City University (#CUHK) in Hong Kong has demanded its Student Union to vacate and return its premises by February 14, claiming that the union failed to comply with a request to submit 16 years of audited financial records within two weeks.

On February 14, representatives of the student union executive committee staged a parting ceremony before returning the office space. They marched from the office to Cut Price, a store run by the student union which offered stationery, snacks and other items to CityU students at a discounted price.

Using a calligraphy brush, a student wrote the phrases “freedom of thought,” “academic autonomy,” “[we will] not yield a single step” and “resist till the end” at the store entrance.

The march ended at the “democracy wall,” a message board previously used by students to share their views on political events. Next to the wall was the Goddess of Democracy statue, a monument commemorating Beijing’s military crackdown on a student-led democracy movement in Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989.

Some students pushed over the red barricades surrounding the wall to put up memo stickers with final messages to the student union.

“Thank you, student union,” one note read.

Another one read: “Grateful that we have walked together for 37 years. Add oil, hang in there!”

57% Hongkongers tend to "live with COVID" as "zero-COVID" is unreachable

The Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#HKPORI), a research institution in Hong Kong, conducted a survey by asking 7,000 Hong Kong citizens to evaluate the existing COVID19 measures.

57% of the respondents believe that "living with the virus" is more realistic than having zero COVID19 cases. Almost 90% of the pro-democratic citizens shared this view.

Among the non-democratic supporters, 40% supported the view of "living with the virus" and while another 40% looked for a "zero case" scenario.

The supporters and the opponents to the implementation of population-wide compulsory testing are divided into 41% in respective fraction; however, the opposition to other COVID-19 measures was more than half.

55% of the respondents oppose "3-dose vaccination". 53% of them disagree to shut down more venues. At last, 54% of them do not want gathering regulation to be tightened.

The survey reveals that the people opt for "living with the virus" as having "zero COVID cases" is almost impossible due to the continuous mutation,

The spokeperson of the institute Dr Chung Kim-Wah pointed out that there is a gap between "believing that the policy is helpful" and "supporting the policy". This reflects the tendency of Hong Kong people to take risks in order to return to their normal life.

Canadian and Taiwanese Artists Uses Music and Drawings to Show their Support on Human Rights

#BeijingWinterOlympics has begun since #Feb04 with boycotts voices circulating the world.

Some artists show their dissatisfaction with #HumanRightsViolation in China with paintbrushes and music notes. A Canadian painter creates "Genocide Games" to mock Beijing Winter Olympic while a Taiwanese band composes "The Times Looking After the Righteous (#時代看顧正義的人)" to criticise dictatorship.

Both works show support to the belief in democracy and freedom.

The Canadian artist, Ricker Choi, is originally from Hong Kong but emigrated to Canada when he was 13. Yet, he is always concerning the situation in Hong Kong. Ricker has created lots of artworks since 2019, supporting Hong Kong democracy movements.

When the winter Olympics was approaching, his heart was filled with emotions. As a result, he picked up his pen and produced a picture "#GenocideGames".

Ricker said, "China claimed to improve the human rights issues in 2008 #OlympicGames, to be free, democratic and open. In fact, the reality is, however, the opposite. They suppress #Uyghurs and #Tibetans, persecuting Hong Kong, threatening Taiwan. Letting them host the Olympic Games again is the greatest sarcasm."

CityU student union under national security investigation following parting ceremony in campus

City University of Hong Kong (#CityU) Student Union is being investigated by national security police after an on-campus parting ceremony on February 14, sources claimed.

On February 7, the university announced it would take back the student union's premises in seven days, saying the union failed to submit its audit report for years.

The union held a farewell ceremony at its office on the afternoon of February 14 before moving out.

Around 30 students dressed in black gathered at the student union office, before leading the march on campus.

Over 100 have joined the march at its peak.

It was understood that the National Security Department has begun gathering evidence on campus.

When asked if CityU had reported the protest to the authorities, the school said: "the national security issues that arose was unforeseen. As it had attracted widespread attention, it didn't necessitate the school's reporting the incident."

US Lawyer Loses Appeal over Police Assault Case, but Vows to Continue Fight until Justice Prevails

The High Court has dismissed an American lawyer, Samuel Phillip Bickett’s appeal against his conviction and sentence for assaulting a police officer. The judge ruled that police guidelines on use of force were “irrelevant” to the case, which she said happened “during a most violent chapter in the history of Hong Kong.”

Bickett is a former compliance director at the Bank of America. His confrontation against an off-duty police officer occurred in Causeway Bay MTR station on December 7, 2019. He was accused of intervening in a scuffle between the officer and a protester, even though the officer refused to produce his warrant card to prove his identity.

He was sentenced to four and a half months of jail in June 2021 for assaulting a plain-clothes police officer. Bickett won the application for an appeal after serving more than six weeks in a prison. He was released on HK$150,000 bail in August 2021.

After his appeal was dismissed, Bickett was ordered to serve the remainder of his sentence. Bickett posted a lengthy statement addressing the problems in the verdict, and said that he will appeal the decision and “continue to fight to overturn the verdict.”

He also questioned whether Hong Kong’s laws “apply equally” to police officers and other members of the public.

His full statement is available on his Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/rsvr03b/posts/10106510477672601

In an interview with local media, Bickett thanked his supporters, including over a hundred letters he received in prison from friends and strangers.

He said that they have been sources of his strength to continue the fight for justice. He also mentioned that he is hoping to set up support groups for the rights of foreigners in Hong Kong prisons, and connecting them with the local community.

Why China Is Freaking Out Over Biden’s Democracy Summit

The Chinese government is furious about U.S. President Joe Biden’s Summit for Democracy, and it wants the world to know.

A week before the summit was to take place, the Chinese government hastily convened its own democracy forum and published a white paper called “China: Democracy That Works,” as well as a report titled “The State of Democracy in the United States,” in which it claims to “expose the deficiencies and abuse of democracy” in the United States. These actions have been accompanied by countless articles, press conferences, and, of course, tweets about China’s “democracy” and its alleged superiority to U.S. democracy.

So why is the Chinese government reacting so strongly to Biden’s virtual summit?
