China Finance scholar pointed out that nowadays the economic downward pressure is very big and the Trioka which pulls economic growth (i.e. consumption, investment and import & export) lost their power, in addition with the severe trend of population aging, the eligible labour force is far behind the expectation from external general anticipation. US-funded news service suspends Cantonese commentary over National Security “redlines”

US-funded news outlet Radio Free Asia (#RFA) has announced the suspension of its Cantonese programmes and commentaries, citing concerns about press freedom in Hong Kong and the “red lines” of the national security law.

“Given the dire situation in Hong Kong, locally-based commentators and hosts face increased risks. It has been clear over the past year that the ‘national security red lines’ are everywhere in Hong Kong,” the memo read. “The freedom of speech accorded to commentators and hosts under Hong Kong’s basic law is not protected by Hong Kong and Chinese laws.”

The broadcasts would be suspended from March 1 “until further notice”.

Founded in 1996, RFA is a non-profit news service funded by the US government to provide news about events in Asia. The outlet publishes in nine languages – including Burmese, Khmer, Korean, Uyghur and Vietnamese.

RFI said that the incident increased concerns about academic freedom in Hong Kong.

The Police intercepted at 37-year-old man surnamed Keung, who was sent to the hospital after he reported injuries to his foot.

After initial investigations, the Police has arrested Keung on charges of wounding. The case is being followed up by Kwai Tsing District Investigation Team Four. Four people are still on the loose.

#Hk9cake posted on their social media on Saturday night, stating that at around 10pm, two employees were attacked by five people clothed in black. The employees suffered bone fractures and were bleeding, and were sent to the hospital.

Hk9cake also stated that pro-Beijing supporters had instigated a verbal confrontation earlier at noon, and were suspected of stepping into the shop’s boundaries in the afternoon.

They asked for the public to provide information regarding the attack, and promised a reward for their troubles. The shop remains closed until an unspecified date.

Hk9cake was opened by #AhLong (阿龍), an engineer arrested during the protests, in July 2020. The shop sells soufflé pancakes, and had organised several “limtied-edition shop manager days” to support those arrested in the protests.

Scott Morrison's WeChat account suspected of being hacked, MPs call for boycott over election interference

Australian media reported on Monday (24th January) that Prime Minister Scott Morrison's WeChat official account was suspected of being hacked and turned into a pro-Beijing account “Aohua Xinshenghuo (Australian Chinese New Life)”. His WeChat team has been unable to log in since the beginning of the year. Its 76,000 followers were notified to quit following old accounts. Some parliamentarians believe this is China's interference in Australia's internal affairs in an election year, and call on Australian politicians to boycott WeChat.

The abnormality of Morrison's WeChat public account was first reported by The Daily Telegraph. It was pointed out that earlier this month, Morrison's official WeChat account had been renamed “Aohua Xinshenghuo” and his profile picture had been changed. The account description was now "providing life information for overseas Chinese in Australia".

UK Government considering proposals to expand #BNO scheme for Hong Kong youngsters born after 1997

On February 10, the UK parliament continued to debate proposed law amendments that would widen the pathway for people with British national (overseas) (BNO) status to resettle in the UK.

The amendment aimed to expand the BNO visa scheme to those aged between 18 and 25 who were born on or after 1997 who have BNO parents to access the scheme independently of their parents.

Speaking in a Committee Stage debate at the House of Lords, the last governor, Chris Patten bluntly criticised the Chief Executives of Hong Kong and members of HK Police Force.

“Everyone of my successors as Chief Executive of Hong Kong had a British passport. ... [the] unhappy paradox is the people at the moment, the quisling, including the member in the police force, [who are] doing the prosecuting, have British passport. And the ones being prosecuted, or the ones being locked up, don't," Lord Patten said.

He continued: "... what is happening in Hong Kong - the destruction of a free city, one of the great free cities in the world - I think that's wrong and we should say it's wrong"

The debate, led by Lord of Alton of Liverpool, saw the amendment receive support from all sides of the House of Commons including with support from Lord Patten of Barnes, the last Governor of Hong Kong as well as the Liberal Democrat and Labour frontbench.

Lord Sharpe of Epsom, the Government Whip in the Lords, said, "We are looking seriously at whether more can be done to support this cohort. I hope this will cheer your Lordships up that we hope to update the House by Report stage."

Ending of Fight Club Restored in China

#FightClub, a 1999-film directed by #DavidFincher and starred by #BradPitt and #EdwardNorton, was streamed by #TencentVideo in China but with a very different ending. The change of ending to satisfy Chinese censorship has created backlash from film fans around the world.

Finally, the Chinese streaming platform restored the original ending to the film, instead of telling the viewers that the police had "rapidly figured out the whole plan and arrested all criminals."

Singer activist Tommy Yuen arrested under National Security Law

Tommy Yuen Man-on was arrested in the morning of February 15 by the Hong Kong national security on suspicion of sedition and money laundering.

In a press briefing, the police said the 41-year-old singer was arrested over content he published on social media since last September that incites hatred towards the government, the police and judges.

The Senior superintendent of the force’s national security unit, also accused the singer of smearing the government’s Covid policies, and singing a song that contains a banned protest slogan during an online concert.

Yuen, a former member of boyband E-kids, has been an activist supporting the pro-democracy camp over the past few years and at the height of the 2019 social unrest.

He had actively participated in the city's political events, including the Human Rights Day Rally on December 8, 2019, where he led the protest march.

Washington is getting China wrong

Evergrande group, one of China’s largest property developers, is tottering on the brink of bankruptcy. Its founder, Hui Ka Yan, is scrounging to find the cash to meet payments on the $300 billion his company owes. Beijing has warned local officials to prepare for possible fallout if the gargantuan firm collapses. Around the world, financial analysts are wondering if Evergrande is China’s “Lehman moment,” the starting gun for a destructive wave of defaults that could take down the nation’s banks and set back the country’s—and the world’s—already shaky recovery from the pandemic-induced economic downturn.
