HK public broadcaster removes social media pages of 12 popular programmes
Since one year ago, the Hong Kong public broadcaster #RTHK, with the change of management, has been removing programmes that the authorities deem "sensitive" from its website and restricting quality programmes from enrolling competitions.
On November 27, 2021,the broadcaster sneaked in a notice at the bottom of its website, saying that the station will halt the Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages of 12 shows from December 3, 2021 onwards.
The notice, however, didn't give any reasons to the halt.
The programmes affected are:
- This Morning;
- The Pulse;
- LegCo Review;
- Hong Kong Connection;
- This Week;
- Think About Thinking;
- Headliner;
- Hong Kong Stories – A Time to Mend;
- Rich Mate Poor Mate Series 2 and 3;
- Sign Language; and
- Knowledge Zone.
Most of these shows are no longer in production, including the axed popular political satire show Headliner.
While some of these social media pages have been dormant for periods ranging from around two months to more than two years, others have been popular among netizens and followed by many.
The Facebook page of Hong Kong Connection had 360,000 likes and followed by 440,000.
The Facebook page of Headliner had 420,000 likes and followed by 480,000.
The Facebook page of This Week had 340,000 likes and followed by 430,000;
The Facebook page of Think about Thinking had 87,000 likes and followed by 100,000.

Australia set to pass new laws that provide powers to sanction human rights abusers
//Laws allowing Australia to slap sanctions on human rights abusers, cyber attackers and corrupt officials are set to be enshrined after passing the Senate.
The so-called Magnitsky style laws, which would allow the Australian government to directly target sanctions against individuals or entities, passed the upper house on Wednesday.
The reforms would allow financial sanctions to be imposed against perpetrators of serious human rights violations - without having to establish a country-specific approach.
Labor Senator Kimberley Kitching - who has advocated for the laws to be adopted - said the new powers were needed to punish human rights abusers and hold criminals to account.
"In a modern age of regimes run by the dregs of humanity (who) torture and jail and murder their own citizens ... if you believe in the dignity of human beings you can't allow such evil to go on unchallenged," she said.
The laws will be reviewed by a joint parliamentary committee after three years.//

The agreement between the US, UK and Australia strengthens old ties as a new era unfolds in the Indo-Pacific region
No one – least of all Beijing – believes the denials. The new defence pact between the US, UK and Australia is unmistakably aimed at containing China. The question is how substantive it will prove to be. The initial project – Canberra’s acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines, with Washington and London’s help – is prompted in part by growing Australian frustration over its troubled contract for French-made vessels. But it opens the way for greater military cooperation and is to be underpinned by wide-ranging collaboration on areas such as cyber-security, artificial intelligence and quantum computing, which China is pursuing intensively.

University in Hong Kong Cites Ongoing Court Cases as Examples of #NationalSecurity Violation, President Calls it 'Academic Freedom'
Recently, Stand News obtained the #NationalSecurityLaw (#NSL) teaching material used in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (#PolyU). The University cited the cases of pro-democracg activist Tong Ying-kit, the LegCo Primary election and the Student Affairs Committee of the HKU Student Union as examples of "secession, subversion and terrorism".
Tong’s case is still undergoing review, while the LegCo primary election case involving the 47 democrats is pending for trial.
At the University’s 85th Inauguration Ceremony, its president #TengJinGuang was asked to comment on the appropriateness of quoting two ongoing court cases as examples in NSL teaching material.
Reporters asked whether it reflected the University’s stance considering these cases without merits. The University was also asked to confirm whether the National Security Department or any government authorities has been consulted during the development of these materials.
In a dilemma, Teng claimed that development of relevant curriculum has undergone "multiple consultations".
Teng said that he trusted the development team’s experience and expertise, claiming that is “academic freedom”.
Teng refused to comment on citing ongoing court cases in teaching material as he stressed that “we were not involved in such detailed discussion.”
The President also avoided the question on the composition of the curriculum development team.
A reporter challenged whether the University would request amendment for erroneous materials. Teng bluffed the question aside, claiming that the responsible staff have always listened to different opinions.

Hong Kong government refuses to listen, costing the lives of wild animal: concern group
In mid-November 2021, the Hong Kong SAR Government put in place the “catch-and-kill” policy towards wild boars, replacing the long-standing "trap, neuter, return" (#TNR) policy, under which wild boars were captured and returned to wild areas.
The government changed the policy after a wild boar injured an auxiliary force officer.
In the video, Mr Wong of the Hong Kong Wild Boar Concern Group said that the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (#AFCD) had refused their request for a meeting.
The concern group objected the Government's decision to kill wild boars, calling it "uncivilized.”
The concern group discourages people from feeding the boars and advocates benign coexistence between human and wild animals and a “cooling-off period”.
“The root cause of the issue is that the government did not provide more resources for conservation and the NTR plan, or to change the designs of rubbish bins, and most importantly, to teach people not to feed wild pigs,” said Wong.
He continued, “These are the main reasons leading to the government pushing all responsibilities onto the wild animals and threatening those who care about the rights of wild animals with criminal offence.”
“Even though we cannot stop the government from enforcing the catch-and-kill rule, we refuse to be silenced. We will continue to make our voices heard till the end,” Wong concluded the interview in anguish.

US and EU Responded to the Mass Disqualification of District Councillors
#HKSAR government demanded all #DistrictCouncillors (DC) in Hong Kong to take an oath earlier. 55 DC lost their seats in total as 49 councillors in democratic parties were disqualified due to invalid vows. 6 directly lost their seats due to the absence of #oath. More than 200 DC had resigned earlier due to the oath request.
The US State Department issued a statement on Oct 21, keeping their concerns to the #HumanRights and the #Freedom in Hong Kong, including the continuous erosion of political participation, especially under the National Security Law (#NSL) which increases prosecution with political motivation.
The statement also said that the prosecution was directed to teachers, unions, lawyers, journalists, medical staff, student unions and citizens. The mass DC disqualification is simply to stop HKers to manage their homeland meaningfully.
US State Department again called Beijing and the Hong Kong authority to release people who are detained unfairly, and stop the suppression of peaceful civil organizations. They also pointed out that HKers and the energetic civil society are always the biggest resources in Hong Kong, as well as the foundation of being a successful international finance hub. The US will continue to support HKers, their rights and their freedom.
EU: Chilling effect occurs under NSL
The #EU External Action Service issued another statement on the same day, saying that HK government disqualifying most of the democratic councillors means denying the DC #election result in 2019. And that excluding the democratic parties from the political participation would weaken Hong Kong democratic governance structure.
The EU indicated that the pressure of civil society is increasing as many unions and organizations in Hong Kong have disbanded. This, again, shows the chilling effect on the rights and freedom in Hong Kong under the NSL and becomes the core of suppressing dissidents.

IMF chief called out over pressure to favor China while at World Bank
World Bank leaders, including then-Chief Executive Kristalina Georgieva, applied "undue pressure" on staff to boost China's ranking in the bank's "Doing Business 2018" report, according to an independent investigation released Thursday.
The report, prepared by law firm WilmerHale at the request of the bank's ethics committee, raises concerns about China's influence at the World Bank, and the judgment of Georgieva - now managing director of the International Monetary Fund - and then-World Bank President Jim Yong Kim.

Nathan Law: I will continue to do what I think [is] good for the city’s freedom
Self-exiled activist #NathanLaw announced that he had been invited by the #US President #JoeBiden to speak at the Summit for Democracy on Human Rights Day. Soon afterwards, Hong Kong’s #SecretaryforSecurity condemned his action, calling it shameful and using ‘#democracy’ as a façade.
In response, Law mocked Tang’s comment on the US Summit for Democracy, saying, “from #China’s standards, it’s already ‘interfering [with] other country’s internal affairs.”
Law stressed that “I am campaigning for a democratic and free Hong Kong. If it’s considered ‘secession’ and ‘subversion’ by #Beijing, it only shows the political #suppression from them.”
He added, “It does not embarrass or stigmatise me. I will continue to do what I think [is] good for the city’s freedom.”

Uneasy and Puzzled, Student Politicism 'Testing the Bottom Line', Wong Yat-chin: Imprisonment is my Atonement
Translated by Guardians of Hong Kong , November 10, 2021 • 1 December 2021
In one whole year after the National Security Law (NSL) took effect the civilian society slipped into a panic state with political figures continually got arrested or left Hong Kong while political parties and organizations got disbanded. Among this misery, Student Politicism (SP) was established in May 2020 when the National Congress was about to pass the NSL bill. Within only one year WONG Yat-chin, the convenor, was already arrested for four times - the latest two within only a week in June. SP suddenly becomes one of the “most upfront” political organizations.

Hong Kong Court Rules Pro-democracy Activists Guilty of Inciting and Joining "Unauthorized Assembly" Based on Social Media Posts
In Hong Kong court on December 8, 2021, Apple Daily founder Jimmy Lai, barrister Chow Hang-tung and former Stand News reporter Gywneth Ho were found guilty of "inciting people" to join the annual June 4 candlelight vigil, commemorating the victims of the 1989 Beijing Tiananmen Massacre, in 2020.
The District Court based its ruling on a few assumptions: The court suspected Lai of participating in the conference outside Victoria Park held by the now-defunct Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China, as Lai had chanted slogan with some members of the Alliance. The magistrate accused Lai of being a public figure as his appearance drew public attention to the unauthorized assembly. He needs not use words of incitement to intend to incite others.
The judge accused Chow, the then vice-chairperson of the Alliance, of writing a Facebook post "See you tonight" with “an implicit intention of asking people to join her in Victoria Park”.
The judge also presumed Ho that she had participated in so-called 'unauthorized assembly", as she uploaded a photo with a white flower and a white candle on her Facebook page.

Hong Kong quarantine pushes Cathay pilots to 'breaking point'
//#CathayPacific has been hit by a wave of pilot resignations in recent weeks as resentment over Hong Kong's strict quarantine regime boils over and crew scramble for emerging opportunities overseas.
The departures come as Hong Kong ties itself to Beijing's closed-border zero-Covid strategy - a move that has kept the city coronavirus-free but internationally isolated.
Hong Kong's leaders say normalising travel with China must come before the rest of the world, a strategy that has caused growing alarm within multinationals in a finance hub that dubs itself "Asia's World City".
AFP interviewed four Cathay pilots who requested anonymity. Each said they knew more than a dozen colleagues who had resigned in the last few weeks.
Pilots fear Hong Kong's future as one of Asia's busiest transport hubs is now at risk.
"Once airlines move infrastructure like technicians, ground crew and pilots out of Hong Kong to places like Seoul and Bangkok, trust me, they're not coming back," one pilot said.
One pilot who flies commercial said he had been unable to see his family overseas for more than 20 months because of the quarantine restrictions and his need to stay flying to top up his depleted salary.
He said he felt Hong Kong's leaders have abandoned the idea of the city being an international hub at the request of "our overlords to the north" - a reference to Beijing.
"I love Hong Kong but if we're not going to plan our way out of this with a roadmap the question becomes what am I doing here?" he said.
"I can't take another year of this."//
