The list of election issues set to define South Korea’s presidential race next year is long. The runaway housing prices, the pandemic, North Korea and gender inequality are a start. But an unlikely addition has also emerged in recent weeks: China.
South Korea’s decision to let the American military deploy a powerful antimissile radar system on its soil in 2017 has been the subject of frequent criticism from China. And last month, a presidential hopeful, Yoon Seok-youl, told the country to stop complaining, unless it wanted to remove its own radar systems near the Korean Peninsula.

On November 23, 2021, the District Court in Hong Kong sentenced the 20-year-old pro-democracy student activist Tony Hon-Lam Chung to jail for three years and seven months. He was charged under the #NationalSecurityLaw and convicted of "secession and money laundering."
Chung founded the now-disbanded pro-democracy student group #StudentLocalism in 2016.
Chung was accused of publishing "seditious messages" on social media and holding activities and protests with "secessionist intent" during the 2019 Anti-ELABMovement.
Chung's marks the third convicted case over the National Security charges and is the first person below 21 years old who is found guilty of violating the National Security Law.
In an interview before the sentence, Chung told Stand News that he had no regrets.
Chung decided to plead guilty only two weeks before the trial. He has been detained for more than one year since he was arrested in October 2020. "There is no other way to deal with the case under the current circumstances and the judicial system," Chung said.
On the day of the trial, Chung's voice was heard in the courtroom, "I plead guilty. I did nothing wrong."
Chung told the reporter that his baseline was not to "revamp" what he had said or done before. So, he told his lawyer not to plead for any lighter sentence. "I have done nothing wrong. I have no regrets," said Chung.

#BlackBauhinia, a documentary featuring Hong Kong pro-democracy activists and social movements in Hong Kong since 2016, won the Best Cinematography Award at the Liberty Movie Festival in South Korea on November 24, 2021.
The film was directed by #MaltePhilippKaeding, a lecturer in international politics at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom. "Revolution of Our Times" has won the Best Documentary at the 58th Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards in Taiwan.
Delivering his acceptance speech by video, director #KiwiChow thanked every person who was filmed and interviewed in this documentary.
One of them, Chow said, was a 16-year-old secondary school student. He was one of the Valiants and was trapped in the Polytechnic University along with Chow for several days during the #PolyU Siege. When he returned to class later. his identity was already made known, and he was trembling in fear when he stepped into his own classroom again. To his surprise, his classmates and teacher all hugged him. The whole room was in tears.
"I really wanted to include this scene in the film, but I couldn't. Still, I want Revolution of Our Times to be like this embrace. During the production, I cried many times. I felt like I relied on this film to comfort myself, to let out my anger and hate, to face my fears and trauma."
In closing, Chow remarked, "To those who remain in Hong Kong, including myself, those who are exiled overseas, and those in prison: My friends, although you may not have a chance to watch the film, I pray to my Heavenly Father that the mere existence of this film could be a comfort and an embrace. Thank you."

The Kong Kong raised Melbourne film maker Clara Law snatched Best Director at the 58th Golden Horse Awards, after being nominated for a Golden Horse award for the seventh time.
The film, Drifting Petals, took 2019 anti-ELAB movement in Hong Kong as background. With protest scenes and images intertwined in the film, Law illustrated not only changes that Hong Kong has undergone, but also the fear and anxiety among Hong Kong people.
The jury praised Law for using a "poetic" way to examine history and reality, showcasing her talent and vision.
Now residing in Australia, Law thanked the jury for bringing the film to Taiwan. Actress Lin Lai received the best director award for Law and spoke on her behalf in the ceremony.
Lai quoted Law that “perhaps, Taiwan and European countries are the only places in the world where her work could be officially shown.”
Lai carried on saying, “She (Clara Law) is a Hong Kong Director. She made this film in Hong Kong but it remains unclear whether the film can be shown there.”

In Hong Kong, 4 members of now-disbanded student organization #StudentPoliticism and 7 members of a pro-democracy activist group, #ReturningValiant, are facing charges of "conspiring to incite subversion".
The 4 members from Student Politicism are Wong Yat-chin, aged 20; Chen Chik-sum, 20; Chu Wai-yin, 18; and Wong Yuen-lam, 19.
On November 18, 2021, when the court was adjourned for recess and Wong Yat-chin was being escorted to the detention room, he shouted back at the court: “This is an offence of hooliganism. No excuse whatsoever is needed.”
He was later severely lectured by the judge, who cautioned him that the court is not a place for political manifestation and his behavior could be regarded as a contempt of court.
Separately, the 7 members from Returning Valiant are Yuen Ka-him, 16; Choi Wing-kit, 20; Leung Yung-wan, 16; Chan Yau-tsun, 25; Tseung Chau Ching-yu, 16; Kwok Man-hei, 18, as well as a 15-year-old girl.
They were charged in late September 2021 under the #NationalSecurityLaw for "inciting others to overthrow" or to undermine the Hong Kong and the Chinese governments with or without the use or the threat of force, as well as the act of conspiracy.
Just before the court dismissed the defendants, the 15-year-old defendant asked the judge to grant an anonymity order, as she is currently under the age threshold as a juvenile. She will turn 16 on the following Tuesday; however, her request was blatantly refused as the judge said, “you will have your birthday soon.”

The cartoon goes with the title "Unsportsmanlike behaviour by Beijing," referring to how the Chinese Community Party (#CCP) deployed different means to silence the country's own top tennis athlete #PangShuai.
As one of the most well-known female tennis player from China, Pang in early November 2021 disclosed on social media that CCP's former Vice Premier #ZhangGaoli had coerced her into sex at his home, in the presence of his wife. The social media post was soon removed and Pang has not been seen in public since then.

Two movie screenings in the 4th Ground Up Student Film Festival have been cancelled after the films failed to obtain a Certificate of Approval from Hong Kong’s Office for Film, Newspaper and Article Administration (#OFNAA).
The news came shortly after the amended Film Censorship Ordinance came into effect on 5 November 2021. The amended ordinance sets out the need to put an end to acts and activities that may endanger national security and it also allows the Chief Secretary of Administration to withdraw already-issued screening permits.
On November 19, 2021, Hong Kong Film Censorship Authority first turned down approval for #TheCage, a short film directed by Hong Kong Baptist University (#HKBU) graduate Tsoi Wing-chau. The film depicts totalitarian rule, capitalism, freedom and resistance.
Two days later, another film Piglet Piglet that sets around Taiwan's Presidential election also failed to obtain an approval certificate. The screening of #PigletPiglet was cancelled just over five hours before it was set to be held.

New York to Hold World's first public screening of Hong Kong protest documentary “Revolution of our Times”
Directed by Hong Kong director #KiwiChow, the documentary “Revolution of our Times” chronicled the months-long pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong in 2019 and 2020 following the Government’s attempt to promulgate the extradition law.
The documentary offered an up-close and personal account of what happened on the protest frontlines.
First debuted in a surprise screeening in Cannes Film Festiv in July 2021, the controversial film soon found resonance in Taiwan’s Golden Horse Film Festival and Japan’s Filmex in subsequent months.
On November 10, 2021, the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam 2021 (#IDFA) also announced the screening of #RevolutionOfOurTimes under the Festival's Best of Fests selection.
A Hongkonger residing in #Netherlands told reporter that many audiences sobbed as they watched the film and the rustling sound of tissue paper could be heard throughout the screening.
He carried on saying that at the end of second screening, audiences applauded incessantly for nearly half a minute to show their respect. Many of them are indeed locals.
Some audiences even chanted protest slogan, “Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Time” as the film ends.
The documentary is also set for its first public screening in New York City from December 10 to 18, with more screenings in other US cities to be announced.
