“Eyes Wide Open” on Relations with China, Says Canadian Foreign Minister

The Canadian foreign minister Marc Garneau said in a CBC interview on 26 September that the Canadian government has no illusions about normalizing relations with China. Vowing to keep their “eyes wide open”, Garneau said the government will approach relations with China with coexistence, competition, cooperation and challenges.

After Huawei’s deputy chair of the board Meng Wanzhou was allowed leave Canada, China immediately released the Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor. Garneau said it was very emotional to see the two returning to Canada, noting that they are in good condition and that the government is not ruling out the possibility of providing compensation to them.

In response to China’s denial that Kovrig’s and Spavor’s detention were related to Meng’s case, Garneau said the timing of the two Canadians’ release shows that the cases are connected “in a very direct manner”.

Danish Sculptor seeks immunity from Hong Kong's National Security Law

Danish artist Jens Galschiot created the Pillar of Shame, a statue that commemorates democracy students and citizens who died on June 4, 1989 during Beijing’s brutal crackdown. The University of Hong Kong (#HKU), where the statue was displayed, has earlier demanded its removal from the campus.

The artist has asked Hong Kong authorities for immunity from the #NationalSecurityLaw so that he can take the statue back to Denmark.

In an open letter issued on November 12, 2021, #JensGalschiot said he is willing to take the statue back to Denmark, but he needs to be in the city to make sure it is dismantled properly without causing significant and irreparable damage to the costly sculpture.

Galschiot also called for assurances that he and his colleagues would not be prosecuted under the national security law.

Apple censors engraving service, report claims

Apple censors references to Chinese politicians, dissidents and other topics in its engraving service, a report alleges.

Citizen Lab said it had investigated filters set up for customers who wanted something engraved on a new iPhone, iPad or other Apple device.

And Apple had a broad list of censored words, not just in mainland China but also in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Apple said its systems "ensure local laws and customs are respected".

Police Allegedly Frames and Traps Hong Kong Student for Transporting "Petrol Bombs"

A 21-year-old student was found to have two #PetrolBombs with him when he was stopped and searched by the police near Kwai Chung Police Station in Hong Kong on the night of April 13, 2020.

The case is, however, not that straightforward. A police sheriff, who had a past record of obstruction of justice, was suspected to have framed and trapped the student.

Despite this, the Department of Justice (#DOJ) did not arrest the sheriff, but prosecuted the student over the charge over "possession of offensive weapons". The student rejected the charge, as he was only told to carry two bottles of "red wine". The case was presented in court on October 31, 2021.

The sheriff was not on the witness list, so the defence requested to summon him to the court as a witness on the next day. The court was required to warn the police that his testimony might lead him to be prosecuted.

In addition, the defence also revealed that the police had failed to bring in a key witness who was the one asking the defendant to bring two bottles of "red wine," which were petrol bomb in disguise, to the location involved.

According to a source, when the middle man was arrested, he revealef that the sheriff involved had asked him to find a "fool" to frame and trap. This was how the entire case is disclosed.

The prosecutor summoned a police officer of Kwai Chung Task Force. The officer said that the sheriff had joined the team for more than a month. On the day before the incident, the sheriff mentioned a piece of intelligence that there would be a person hiding petrol bombs in the flower rack in Kwai Fong Estate, and asked the team members to take special care of it. However, the sheriff suddenly disappeared for more than one hour in that evening, until the defendant was arrested.

Hong Kong Authorities Might Postpone
#NationalSecurityLaw Court Case to 2022, Detaining 33 Key Dissidents for 1 Year Before Trial

On November 14, 2021, Hong Kong's Department of Justice (#DoJ) requested the courts to postpone the National Security Law (#NSL) cases of 47 pro-democracy figures who had participated in the 2020 primary election to February 2022.

This means that 33 of them will have been held in prison for an entire year, without any bail, before their trial can begin.

In March 2021, Hong Kong authorities arrested 47 key pro-democracy figures, including around a dozen of elected lawmakers. The defendants were accused of conspiracy to commit subversion in connection with the primary polls the pro-democracy camp held in the summer of 2020 to pick candidates for the Legislative Council (#LegCo) Elections that was cancelled by the government in the end.

While 14 of them have been released on bail ahead of their trial, 33 had been on remand for almost a year.

China-India Talks End in Blame Game as Military Presence on Border Mounts, Beijing Warns New Delhi Against “Misjudgement”

The latest military talks between India and China have broken down in mutual blame as their border conflict sees another round of escalation. Held on 10 October, the corp commander-level talks, the 13th round of their kind, had been expected to ease tensions along the two countries’ long-disputed border.

The talks came amid Indian media reports of Chinese troops crossing the boundary and being briefly detained. News 18, a partner of CNN in India, quoted high-level Indian officials as saying that 200 PLA soldiers were intercepted while crossing the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Arunachal Pradesh, parts of which are claimed by China as belonging to South Tibet. Some of the soldiers were briefly detained before local commanders from the two sides came to a settlement. Chinese state media have denied the reports.

Both countries have reportedly ramped up presence of troops along the border by the tens of thousands over the past year. Military activities in the region are now at their peak in decades.

There is currently no agreement to the Sino-Indian border with the two countries tentatively separated by the LAC. News 18 has quoted sources as saying that both sides have been patrolling the LAC and that encounters can last hours if one happens. The sources said the area had largely been peaceful with both sides complying with their agreement.

IPCC Said Nothing Wrong with Hong Kong Police Shooting Journist without Warning during #PolyUSiege

During the Anti-ELAB movement on November 18, 2019, pro-democracy protesters trapped in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (#PolyU) attempted to break through the cordon line; however, the police outflanked them by splitting into 3 routes.

When a journalist from #StandNews was interviewing an arrestee, whose face was covered with blood, a sheriff from the Z4 Police Tactic Unit (#PTU) suddenly shot a #PepperBalls to the journalist's feet without warning.

Two years later, the Complaints Against Police Office (#CAPO) ruled that there was "nothing wrong" and the Independent Police Complaints Council (#IPCC) agreed with the classification.

CAPO replied in a letter regarding the case, claiming that police did not have a choice but to shoot the pepper balls and apply a minimum level of violence to disperse the crowd. The letter said that the aim was to "protect the police and the arrestees" and the reason was that "someone was non-stop chasing after the police" and "the police has asked people on site to leave, but they ignored".

There is a footnote in the letter, claiming that there is either a "misunderstanding," or "sufficient evidence showing the fairness and rationality of the actions carried out under #PoliceForceOrdinance."

London Artists: Salute to those suffered under totalitarianism

In the face of injustice, people fight back with different ways and find ways to make their voices heard. While performing in London, a group of artists said they are fortunate to live on a free land where they can still follow their hearts to pursuit justice.

On November 6, 2021, a social movement art platform #Artvocate carried out a mobile exhibition. Some artists were blind folded, representing the citizens being ripped off freedom. Without fear, they took to the street to show their defiance and strong will.

Saluting Hong Kong pro-democracy protestors, the artists showed lines of umbrella in their performance. Tribute was also paid to those fought against the authoritarian rule in Myanmar.
