Who 'politicizes' Hong Kong’s annual #marathon? “Hong Kong, Add Oil!” being censored and UK-based bank declines to commit sponsorship next year
After being suspended for more than one year due to the coronavirus outbreak, the Hong Kong Standard Chartered Marathon returned to the city on October 24, 2021.
Although organizing committee demanded to not bring politics into a sports event, the police's reaction was overwhelming.
The Hong Kong police force deployed counter-terrorism special operations units and railway response units at most major sections of the marathon route, claiming an attempt to "prevent and combat terrorist activities".
As early as 4am, at least 100 police officers were sighted. Many of them were wearing tactical vest.
During the day, a runner told a local press that she failed the security check because she was wearing what thr police deemed a “political outfit” — running shorts that had “Hong Kong, Add Oil!” printed on them.
She was ordered to change her shorts in a nearby booth.
Another runner with a “Hong Kong, Add Oil!” tattoo on his leg was given a bandage to cover it up.
A man in a green T-shirt that read “Hong Kong, Add Oil!” was intercepted at the starting point of the marathon as a staff on the site queried the outfit “politically laden” threatening him that “wear it at your own risk”. He was asked to remove the T-shirt and put on a windbreaker to run instead.
When being asked whether the organizing committee’s demand was reasonable, the man said in frustration, “It is not up to me to make comment on this matter, but leave it to our own fair judgement.”
At a press briefing before the Marathon, the organizer demanded participants and spectators not to "politicise the race", despite the fact that the the organizing committee failed to cite specific examples of their concern
In the post-run press conference, the committee's Chairman William Ko Wai-lam struggled to explain what is political about the prhase “Add Oil!”, a common and multipurpose Cantonese expression denoting encouragement.
Before cutting short the press conference in embarrassment, Ko repeated for 7 times, “This is a sports event and we do not wish to see any political element.”
When asked if the title sponsor of the event, the UK-based Standard Chartered bank, supported free speech in Hong Kong, a spokesperson for the bank said they “have no comment on this.”
The bank equally would not comment on whether it would support runners targeted by police, or whether it would sponsor the event next year.

In response to the new charges, Hui denounced the Hong Kong courts as “contemptible.”
He says that his contempt for the city's justice system fit the dictionary definition of the term, regarding it as something “lowly, insignificant, worthless or disgusting so as to despise it.”

The Hong Kong government announced yesterday that all citizens are required to record their visit with LeaveHomeSafe before entering government buildings and offices, such as public libraries, sports centres, museums, etc. It will be strictly enforced starting from November.
The Hospital Authority (HA) and the Police Force said that the new rule covers the HA Headquarters, public hospital administrative buildings, police headquarters, and police stations.
The Society for Community Organization said that many homeless people rely on the drinking water and showering facilities in government sports halls, and sometimes need to visit government offices for various procedures. However, most of them do not have a smartphone or even a mobile phone. As a result, many had expressed anxiety about making LeaveHomeSafe mandatory for these facilities.
When LeaveHomeSafe was first released in November last year, government officials said using it would be voluntary, and only a convenience for one's own visits electronically. However, days afterwards, officials stated on a radio programme that they would not rule out making it compulsory.
Updates: The government has announced that cemeteries, public toilets, public bathhouse and rubbish collection points are exempted.

An activist group had digitally scanned the #PillarofShame and made the 3D model publicly available, in an effort to preserve the statue commemorating the pro-democracy protesters killed during the 1989 Tiananmen massacre in Beijing.
Thre group "Lady Liberty HK" announced the release of the publicly accessible file in a Facebook post on October 29, 2021.
"The 3D file preserves details including every face on the statue, #JensGalschiøt's signature, the writings and plates on the base," said the post.
While Galschiøt, the statue's creator, had made similar pillars commemorating other ignominious events in other countries, all pillars are unique.
This 3D model therefore represents "THE Pillar of Shame that belongs to Hong Kong."
The original Pillar had been placed on permanent display inside Hong Kong University's campus since 1998. However, HKU had recently demanded its removal, a move that drew condemnation from civic groups worldwide, as well as Galschiot, the statue's creator and owner. He had called on Hong Kong citizens to, in the event that the statue is demolished, gather as many pieces as they could, so that it could be rebuilt elsewhere in the world.
Echoing the artist's call, the group Lady Liberty HK wrote: "If one day #HKU act in accomplice to Hong Kong Gov. and the CCP and removes the statue, anyone in the world can still view it online and recreate it."

Government sources have said they are aware of sleeper agents applying for British National (Overseas) visas under the pretence of seeking refuge from the totalitarian state.

In an article on her Patreon published on October 23, she mentioned that her relatives and friends recently tried to send books about the late activist Szeto Wah and the Tiananmen Massacre in 1989, but the Hong Kong Correctional Services (#HKCS) rejected them.
(Editor's note: Szeto Wah was the founder of the Hong Kong Alliance (#HKA) and was one of the most influential activists in Hong Kong who worked for decades to establish, preserve and protect Hong Kong people's democratic institutions, freedom and human rights.)
One of the books, she quoted an HKCS staff, "mentions behaviours of subverting state power". The decision could not be appealed, the staff added.
Chow questions whether the HKCS had assumed the role of the judge, making a fair trial impossible. The books are reference materials for her to prepare for her own defense in the trial, she said.
"If I can't have access to information about the Alliance and the June 4th incident, I would have no chance to find evidence to refute these accusations."
The Correctional Services have set up a perfect catch-22, she said of the arrangement. "This would guarantee the prosecution a win."

On October 21, 2021, the Department of the State of the United States issued a press release, condemning the "continued erosion of human rights and fundamental freedoms" in Hong Kong.
The US government expressed concerns over the "increase in politically-motivated prosecutions, including through the National Security Law, targeting Hong Kong’s teachers, labor unions, lawyers, journalists, health care workers, student unions, and individual citizens."

Yesterday, 1 October, China's National Day, was marked by demonstrations by Hong Kong people in exile or abroad in the UK and the US. In Washington, a few dozen people, including Hong Kong Liberation Coalition (HKLC) founder Sixtus Leung Chung-Hang and Director of China Affairs at the World Uighur Congress Ilshat H. Kokbore, joining the demonstration at the Chinese Embassy in the US on Thursday (30th September), local time. In an interview with Radio Free Asia (RFA), Leung said that their demands were threefold: to call on the US and the international community to boycott the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics; to strengthen sanctions against China; and to lobby the US Congress to push an ethics investigation bill against US companies, that forbidden them to invest in Chinese companies that undermine human rights.
In San Francisco, overseas Hongkongers demonstrated outside the Chinese Consulate General on Friday (1st October), raising flags such as "Hong Kong Independence" and "Liberate Hong Kong. Revolution of Our Times", while some reiterated the "Five Demands" of the 2019 Anti-Extradition movement. Demonstrators also burned a China National Flag and a photo of President Xi Jinping outside the consulate.

The Hong Kong SAR Government implemented yet another controversial rule on November 1, 2021, mandating the population to check in with the LeaveHomeSafe tracking app when entering government premises. These locales include libraries, wet markets, courts, and sports facilities.
On the first day of its implementation, the Hong Kong Police arrested at least 5 people in the morning at Immigration Tower in Wan Chai, accusing them of using a fake app.
RTHK reported that the arrestees included two immigration officers, one staff member of the Audit Commission and two contractors.
Although exemptions are given to children, the elderly and disabled people, they are still required to submit their personal details.
Civil Service Secretary #PatrickNip claimed the government will "exercise flexibility"; however, according to InMedia, outside the Tai Po Municipal Complex, many domestic helpers and elderly had difficulties in adapting to the policy. Some had to download the app on the site, while some left for the street market instead.
As the people of Hong Kong expressed concern over the privacy issue of the government-monitored app, many citizens bought a new phone just for installing the app and to prevent personal information from being tracked.
