Universities hire planes to fly in China students

Britain’s top universities are chartering flights to get Chinese students to the UK next month amid fears that global travel restrictions could cost hundreds of millions of pounds in overseas fees.

The universities are worried that their income from overseas students — which is more than £1 billion, partly because of the premium on domestic fees the institutions are able to charge — could be undermined by travel problems.

More than 50 UK universities — including many of the elite Russell Group of 24 leading institutions such as Imperial College London, Bristol and Exeter — have already chartered four flights to bring in 1,200 Chinese students in time to start their degrees next month.

Ban Chinese firm from working on UK nuclear power stations, ministers told

Cross-party China hawks have called on the government to slap an “outright” ban on a Chinese state-owned firm’s involvement in all UK nuclear power plants.

Tory MP Sir Iain Duncan Smith and Labour peer Baroness Kennedy of The Shaws, co-chairs of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (Ipac), on Tuesday welcomed reports that ministers propose curbing Beijing’s links with future assets planned for Britain’s nuclear fleet.

However, the senior parliamentarians urged Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng to go further and reconsider the role of China general Nuclear (CGN) in the Hinkley Point C plant in Somerset, where construction is already significantly advanced.

China’s regulatory crackdown has wiped billions off tech stocks — here are the risks ahead

Chinese authorities have introduced a slew of legislation in the past few months, largely aimed at the tech sector — a move that’s spooked investors and wiped out billions of dollars in value from the country’s internet giants.

The legislative onslaught began in November last year when the huge initial public offering of billionaire Jack Ma’s financial technology company Ant Group was suspended.

Since then, regulators have introduced anti-monopoly legislation focused on the so-called “platform economy” which broadly refers to internet companies operating a variety of services from e-commerce to food delivery. Regulations have also aimed at bolstering critical data security and protection laws.

Press groups raise alarm over threats to foreign media in China

Press groups have expressed alarm at the worsening intimidation of foreign media in China, often driven by government officials and organisations.

As recovery and rescue efforts continue in Henan province after last week’s deadly floods, groups including Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of China (FCCC) have condemned recent harassment and threats towards journalists covering the disaster.

Reporters from international outlets – including the BBC, Los Angeles Times, Deutsche Welle, Al Jazeera, CNN, Agence France-Presse and Associated Press – have been harassed or threatened over their coverage.

"I cherish my life and love Hong Kong. I do not suffer any physical or mental illness, and I have no intention of suicide or self-harm..."

During the anti-extradition law amendment bill (Anti-ELAB) movement in Hong Kong in 2019, mysterious “body found” incidents had aroused tremendous public attention.

Many young pro-democracy protesters openly put down their “I won’t suicide” declaration on social media in order to avoid becoming the next victim of suspected police brutality.

Recently, Hongkongers abroad called people to screen cap of these declaration for an exhibition from 10 to 19 September, 2021 in Manchester.

Documentaries of this pro-democracy movement will also be shown at the exhibition so that visitors can come to learn all the truth and facts.

Artists, including Wong Kwok-choi(黃國才), Chu Yiu-wai(朱耀煒), Cheung Ka-lei (張嘉莉), Black Blog, Rice and Beans were invited to the exhibition.

The oganiser of the exhibition asked protesters to screen cap their declation, remove any sensitive information before sending their submission.

China culture crackdown a sign of 'profound' political change - commentary

China's crackdown on celebrity culture and its moves to rein in giant internet firms are a sign of "profound" political changes under way in the country, a prominent blogger said in a post widely circulated across state media.

The Chinese government has recently taken action against what it has described as "chaotic" online fan club culture, and has also punished celebrities for tax evasion and other offences.

In a wide-ranging series of interventions in the economy, it has also promised to tackle inequality, "excessively high" incomes, soaring property prices and profit-seeking education institutions.

Johnson may block Chinese takeover of UK’s largest computer chip maker

Boris Johnson may block a Chinese-owned company from purchasing the UK’s largest producer of semiconductors, a senior government adviser has suggested, as they warned Beijing was on the brink of initiating a new “cold war”.

Tony Abbott, the former prime minister of Australia recruited by Johnson to advise on post-Brexit trade, said he was heartened by a review being launched into the takeover of Welsh microchip manufacturer Newport Wafer Fab by Nexperia and suggested it meant the process could be paused.

Johnson had asked his national security adviser, Sir Stephen Lovegrove, to look into the sale after previously being accused of acquiescing to the deal by not scrutinising it more closely, particularly given the semiconductor industry’s geopolitical prominence.

#Nottingham, Hongkongers in #UK Preserve Memory of 8.31 Prince Edward Attack

2021 marks the second anniversary of the 8.31 Prince Edward Attack by the police in 2019. As Hong Kong is under the tight grip of authoritarian control, there are no large scale memorial activities planned.

Overseas Hongkongers told their fellow Hongkongers that they have not forgotten this date.

In UK on August 29, 2021, the group "Nottingham Stands With Hong Kong" presented a large-scale silent skit titled "We Are the Chosen One", recreating scene after scene of heart-rending moments from the 2019 Anti-ELAB protests.

Participants posted photos and videos of the skit on Facebook, noting that "there are things that can't be done in Hong Kong now. We understand. So leave it to us overseas people."

The group explained that they wanted to preserve the memory of the events; however, it was even more important that the international community knows what happened in Hong Kong. "It doesn't matter if you're in Hong Kong or overseas. As long as you're a true Hongkonger, our hearts will be connected, and we'll remember what we promised to each other. See you under the Pot!"

Wanchai district councilor #LeungPakKin was a journalist for #RicePost on the scene of the 8.31 Prince Edward Attack, and had recorded video of the attack as it unfolded in 2019.

Earlier in August 2021, someone had mailed him a box cutter blade, along with a threatening letter: "Shut up about 8.31, and your family will stay safe".

In response to inquiries by Stand News, Leung saif that he will not keep quiet because of the letter. He says that the attack had been a collective memory of everyone, and it will not disappear simply because he stopped talking.

He elaborates on his thoughts on the letter on his Facebook page, stating that it didn't have to be him talking about the 8.31 attack by the police. "The video already showed everything. The people and events in the video are the most important [proof]. The violence dealt by the armed men in the video, whether they're reasonable, whether they're proportional - there's no need for me to say more."

Leung said that he had turned down all interviews since last year.
