Over 100 lawmakers around the world condemn HK government's cruel treatment of pro-democracy activists

#AndyLi, one of the 12 Hong Kong pro-democracy activists imprisoned in China, was transferred back to Hong Kong on Mar 22, 2021 after serving his sentence in China; however Li’s family has been unable to reach him for multiple days.

On Apr 2, 2021, the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (#IPAC) issued a statement criticizing the Hong Kong government’s cruel and inhumane treatment towards Li and his family, and called for the release of Li and all pro-democracy activists that are detained unfairly.

Signatories of the statement involve national lawmakers from the UK, US, Canada, Japan, and different European countries, as well as IPAC’s advisors. The statement mentioned that, since Li’s transfer to Hong Kong after serving his 7-month sentence in Shenzhen, Li has been held in a single cell in a psychiatric facility without being able to get in touch with his family. The statement described Li’s treatment as “cruel, inhumane and shocking”.

Li’s case was also described as an “emblematic of the Chinese Government’s ruthless crackdown on Hong Kong’s way of life, and disregard for the international treaties designed to protect it.”. The signatories pledged to make urgent representation to their respective governments, and demanded Hong Kong government to release Li and all activists that are being detained unjustly.

Brother of HK activist detained in China reopens online #Lego shop to raise funds for sentencing fee

Over half a year has passed since 12 fleeing pro-democracy Hongkongers were arrested by the Chinese police at sea and detained in China.

10 of the 12 activists that were charged with "illegal border crossing" have already been escorted back to Hong Kong. The remaining two, #Tang KaiYin and #QuinnMoon, were charged by China for "organizing illegal border crossing". They are currently still serving their three-year and two-year sentences in China respectively.

In April 2021, Tang’s younger brother announced on social media that he will reopen his brother's online model shop; he will be selling Tang's stock of discontinued Lego sets.

The profits, after covering rent for the storage space, will mainly be used to pay the fees of Tang’s incarceration in China, as well as his $20K RMB fine.

The remainder will be used to support Tang when he returns to Hong Kong after serving his sentence.

Since the arrest of the 12 Hongkongers, the younger Tang had been busy dealing with the authorities on his brother's behalf, as well as handling the media and taking care of his family. There had been times when he became exhausted and even fell ill, and he admits that he blamed his brother sometimes. "But then I would think, he didn't steal or hurt anyone. There's a reason he did what he did, so ..." he pauses, "I became more accepting and more forgiving."

He says that he had never been a Lego enthusiast. He joked that, although he now spends all his spare time on the online shop, he still couldn't get interested in Lego. He wanted to tell his brother: "Hurry up and come back and deal with your stuff, I don't want to touch it. Take care of yourself; we're family, I'll wait for you."

Hongkongers Wish Pro-democracy Protesters Happy Birthday in #Court

Video: https://t.me/guardiansofhongkong/30263

In a hearing relating to a pro-democracy protest on December 8, 2019, citizens went to the High Court on June 8, 2021 to voice support for the defendents who were charged by the prosecution with "conspiring to assault with intent".

Among the defendants, #LaiChunPong, the owner of the pro-democracy 'yellow' store 3C, and #CheungMingYu, who was one of the 12 Hongkongers arrested and jailed in China, both have their birthdays in June.

As the hearing came to an end, their families together with some supporting citizens, shouted "Happy Birthday" and "Fight On" to them.

As they were remanded and transported by the vehicle of the Correctional Services Department, their families and supporters unfurled a banner that read "Happy Birthday" on the street.

Lai's family members told the press they wished he could come home soon. They also mentioned that Lai was moved when other detainees made him a birthday cake inside the detention center.

Chinese Prison Penalises Hongkonger for "Failing" Mindset, Lawyer: May Loss Communication Right

#TangKaiYin, one of the 12 pro-democracy Hongkongers who tried to flee to Taiwan but was captured by the Chinese authorities, is serving a prison sentence in Conghua in China.

His family in Hong Kong said they had not received any letters from him since February, 2022, and he did not collect letters sent to him.

Tang's brother checked the prison's online system yesterday and found that Tang still has a few transactions in June and July, 2021. But his prison score was deducted twice for "violating the rule," including "failing to pass the ideological, cultural and technical learning assessment for that month."

A China human rights lawyer, who has assisted these 12 Hongkongers, told #InMedia that prisoners who are not willing to plead guilty or "accept the mind conversion" might be forbidden from receiving letters and may be further deprived of consumption or communication rights.

According to the lawyer's analysis, not receiving letters, in this case, may not be related to plead of guilt, as Tang had already been sentenced earlier. It is more likely because he doesn't change his mind, "something like indoctrination, perhaps some kind of non-cooperation," he said.

In addition, prisoners sent to prison hospitals due to illness or physical punishment would not be allowed to receive or write letters, "It is also possible that he cannot write letters because of his health condition," the lawyer explained.

7 young activists sentenced to 10 months in jail in Hong Kong after serving in Chinese prison

The #12HongKongers who intended to abscond to #Taiwan reportedly in August 2020 were arrested and detained by PRC's marine police for secretly crossing the border.

Up til July 2022, 2 of these 12 Hongkongers are still being detained in China while 9 were charged for #ObstructionofJustice when they returned to Hong Kong after serving their sentence in China.

Amonh them, Wong Wai-Yin were charged with the #CrimeofExplosives instead of Obstruction of Justice. Hoang Lam Phuc and the others have pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 10 months in jail at the District Court in Hong Kong on July 15, 2022.

Li Chi-yin, who is serving 3.5 years in prison, was added 7 months in jail.

Temporary judge Wong Hing-Wai Newman claimed that their behaviour shows their ignorance and intention to challenge to Hong Kong judicial system.

The judge describes the case as the "first in history" that the Department of Justice charges people who do not return to detention on time for Obstruction of Justice. He says it is a pity to sentence these young defendants after reading their petition letters, but "rules are rules".
