Myanmar has experienced a coup for five months. A flash protest occurred around Yangon on 26 June, 2021 to oppose the military’s seizure of power.
It was a Saturday when some civilians participated in the flashmob protest, flashing torches and holding signboards. Some of them raised three fingers, and then left very quickly.
That was also the 45th year of the death of Salai Tin Maung Oo, a student movement's leader who was hanged on 26 June 1976 when he was in jail.
In 2021, protesters held the sign “I’ll never kneel before your military boots”, which was the last words of Salai Tin Maung Oo. It also indicated that they would not yield to the military government.

During the opening ceremony of 2020 Tokyo Olympics on July 23, 2021, the national team of Taiwan was arranged to march in the stadium in an order that follows the alphabetical sequence of "Ta". It means the organizer identifies Taiwan in the name of "Taiwan", instead of the name "Chinese Taipei", imposed by the People's Republic of China (#PRC).
Although the official announcement was still made according to the denomination "Chinese Taipei", the host of the Japanese national TV channnel #NHK used the name "Taiwan".
Moreover, on the platform Niconico where many Japanese netizens streamed the ceremony, enthusiatic reactions appeared with entrancd of Team Taiwan and Team Hong Kong.
Many netizens typed in phrases like "Taiwan Taiwan", "An Independent Country", "Fight on, Taiwan", "Love Taiwan" when seeing Tean Taiwan marched in. Netizens also cheered for the Team Hong Kong: "Fight on Hong Kong", "Hongkongers Persist" and "Fight for freedom"
This contrasts with the reactions the Japanese netizens had towards the PRC team. The netizens critique China's human rights violations and political prosecutions in the past and present. Words like "Tiananmen", "Covid", "massacre" popped up.

The US Federal Communications Commission unanimously approved the allocation of US$1.9 billion to subsidize US companies to replace equipment provided by Chinese telecommunications companies.
The funding aims to subsidize the removal of related communication equipment in rural areas of the United States. The number of customers of eligible companies must be less than 10 million, and the replacement equipment must be purchased before the end of June last year to apply for funding.
Last year, the committee determined that Huawei and ZTE constitute a national security threat to the US communications network. American companies cannot use government funding to purchase equipment from Huawei or ZTE. It refers to the high risk of equipment being controlled by external parties and stipulates that companies must destroy and remove their equipment.

After being attacked by a member of DAB, a pro-China party, for donning black in Tokyo Olympics, Hong Kong Badminton athlete Angus Ka-long Ng lost his latest match in the elimination round on July 28, 2021. Ng expressed immense disappointment but thanked his supporters for rooting for him.
Ng has won in an earlier match against Mexican representative Lino Munoz on July 25. Despite his victory, Ng had to spend time between matches to respond to the criticism sparked by the pro-Beijing camp--its members had demanded Ng to withdraw from the Olympics, all because he has worn a black tee shirt.
It can only be assumed that the pro-Beijing party associated the color black to pro-democracy movement which they oppose.
Ng explained on his social media page that he has no sponsor and received no authorization to print the Hong Kong SAR emblem on his own tee shirt.
The criticism of the pro-Beijing camp led to the rapid change of Ng's tee shirt by the Hong Kong Olympics Commitee within days.
On July 28, Ng was given a new tee-shirt in white and green, printed with the Hong Kong SAR emblem, sponsored by Fila, in a competion with Kevin Cordon, representative of Guatemala. However, the tee-shirt was not Ng's first choice for his match. During the match, he kept wiping the sweat that was not absorbed by the tee shirt.
After losing the match, Ng expressed his frustration and thanked his supporters on Instagram. "I am moved by all the support and encouragement. I know I'm not alone. Maybe some people are destined to play tragic roles in life," the Hong Kong Badminton star wrote. "I will stand up again, but it'll take some time."
The pro-Beijing camp's criticism over Ng's black tee shirt has angered many people in Hong Kong. Many netizens felt for Ng and pointed out that the incident has imposed unnecessary pressure on Hong Kong athletes in international games.

Michael, in his 70s this year, raised a sign he handwrote: "If there is no jury, does Common Law still exist?" at Taikoo Plaza and stood in silence.
In response to the conviction of Tong, he bluntly replied, "It's already expected" and criticized that "under Common Law, large cases that go to the High court must have juries present- why isn't there one all of a sudden?"
"The three judges collude with each other, and it is no different from Mainland China." He lamented, "Now there is no law. Rule of law is dead."
Michael predicted that Tong, "even without life imprisonment, will face more than 20 years [of jail]."
He also described that currently, "NSL rules us all," so action does not change much and he fears arrest. However, he still came out and expressed his sentiments. "I'm a hardliner- if you don't shout they'd think you're dead."

The sentencing of Hong Kong's first National Security Law case is scheduled on July 30, 2021.
On July 29, the prosecution revealed that they had prepared Chinese law books for judges in Hong Kong court to review, believing that those sources were related to the case, and could provide strong support to the judges.
According to sources, the law books cited were written in simplified Chinese, named "Comprehension and Application of Criminal Law Provisions and Judicial Practice" (刑法条文理解适用与司法实务全书). However, the judges pointed out that those sources were for reference only. The interpretation of NSL would be based on Hong Kong's law principle. In regards to simulataenous sentencing, there is a large dispute among judges.
Tong Ying Kit pleads: I'm not a bad person, just did something very, very stupid
As "Inciting secession" and "Terrorism" are both serious crime, Tong, only 24 years old, is facing the highest sentence of life imprisonment.
On July 29, the Defence, in their plea, cited Tong's upbringing, the death of his parents, and his grandmother's cancer. If he faced a serious sentence, he would not see his grandmother for the last time.
The Defence expressed that Tong "is not a bad person, but did a very, very stupid thing and feels true remorse", and that "he knows he deserves punishment, but hopes the court can be light in sentencing."
The prosecution side, however, emphasized that according to the NSL, only when a suspect surrenders or exposes others can sentences be reduced.

First #NationalSecurityLaw Case in Hong Kong: Prosecution Cites Chinese Law Books to Assist Judge's Sentencing
The sentencing of Hong Kong's first National Security Law case is scheduled on July 30, 2021.
On July 29, the prosecution revealed that they had prepared Chinese law books for judges in Hong Kong court to review, believing that those sources were related to the case, and could provide strong support to the judges.
According to sources, the law books cited were written in simplified Chinese, named "Comprehension and Application of Criminal Law Provisions and Judicial Practice" (刑法条文理解适用与司法实务全书). However, the judges pointed out that those sources were for reference only. The interpretation of NSL would be based on Hong Kong's law principle. In regards to simulataenous sentencing, there is a large dispute among judges.
Tong Ying Kit pleads: I'm not a bad person, just did something very, very stupid
As "Inciting secession" and "Terrorism" are both serious crime, Tong, only 24 years old, is facing the highest sentence of life imprisonment.
On July 29, the Defence, in their plea, cited Tong's upbringing, the death of his parents, and his grandmother's cancer. If he faced a serious sentence, he would not see his grandmother for the last time.
The Defence expressed that Tong "is not a bad person, but did a very, very stupid thing and feels true remorse", and that "he knows he deserves punishment, but hopes the court can be light in sentencing."
The prosecution side, however, emphasized that according to the NSL, only when a suspect surrenders or exposes others can sentences be reduced.

Hong Kong swimmer Siobhan Bernadette Haughey wins silver medal in the women's 100m freestyle.
It is the second medal won by 23-year-old Haughey in 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She broke Asia's and Hong Kong's records with a time of 52.27 seconds.
She is the first Hongkonger to be a double silver Olympian. Speaking of her experience, She said she has enjoyed very much that 100m swim. She believed that 80% of the competition has to do with one's psychology and 20% with the physical strength.
Haughey thanked her fellow Hongkongers at home, "I know in my home, in Hong Kong, many people support me. Despite the time differece between Hong Kong and Japan, many Hongkongers got up early to root for me."

The first National Security Law case against 24-year-old Hongkonger Tong Ying-Kit resulted in a conviction on "inciting secession" and "terrorism", after a trial without jury.
He has been remanded for more than year since July 1, 2020, with no bail. It was one day after the National Security Law was forcefully imposed by Beijing on Hong Kong on June 30.
The court on July 30, 2021 sentenced him to 9 years in jail.

On the morning of July 30, 2021, Hong Kong swimmer Siobhan Bernadette Haughey won her second silver medal in 100m freestyle.
Hundreds of Hongkongers gathered at Kwun Tong's APM mall watch the live broadcast and root for her.
Earlier on, it was rumored that police may be sent to the mall to investigate a suspected case connected to the violation of national anthem law.
On July 30, young black-clad citizens, while leaving the mall after watching the live broadcast, were intercepted, and searched by Hong Kong police.
According to those who were searched, it was suspected that plain-clothes police have been stationed at the mall to watch over civilians. The police targeted at civilians leaving the mall and took them back to the mall for search.
