Newsroom raid has chilling effect on the press in Hong Kong

Brian Stelter speaks with WSJ reporter Elaine Yu about the recent arrests at Apple Daily, a pro-democracy newspaper in Hong Kong. Then he interviews Mark Simon, assistant to Apple Daily chairman Jimmy Lai, who is also behind bars. "Folks, if you don't have a free press, you do not have a free society," Simon says.

Police Bust Dinner Gathering due to Rape Report; Hong Kong's Top Government Officials Violate Gathering Ban

Several top government officials including some heads of disciplinary forces in Hong Kong were found violating the gathering ban, as Stand News revealed on July 7, 2021.

Commissioner of Customs and Excise, Hermes Tang; Director of Immigration, Au Ka-wang; and the Undersecretary for Security, Sonny Au were all fined in a dinner event that took place in Wan Chai on March 2, 2021.

According to two sources, among the 9 people involved, at least one top manager of a China-owned property developer that is listed in Hong Kong Stock Market was present at the dinner. The related company, however, did not respond to the inquiry of Stand News.

The said dinner was discovered when the police investigated a rape case. According to sources, the rape took place in the same venue as the dinner, which is a residential unit in Wan Chai.

The man who was arrested and charged for attempted rape worked for a China-owned enterprise and had participated in the dinner gathering.

On July 8, 2021, the heads of customs and immigration department issued two separate but identical statements, claiming that they have paid the fine.

However, they refused to answer the journalists questions with regard to the nature and the purpose of the dinner and the conflict of interests. The government officials did not revealed whether they were treated.

10 Cities in #UK Mourn the Shutdown of Apple Daily in Hong Kong

#AppleDaily, a top-selling pro-democracy newspaper in Hong Kong, was forced to cease operation on June 24, 2021.

On June 27, HongKongers in the UK organised assemblies in different cities to mourn the "death" of the newspaper.

Participating cities included London, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Reading, Nottingham, Sutton, Sheffield, Kent, and Leeds.

Jeff, an former employee of Apple Daily distributed his custom-made newspaper.

Wong, an ex-vice director of Apple Daily gave his opinion about the assembly in his interview with the Stand News. He said, "We welcome everyone to participate and remember Apple Daily".

He also mentioned that people were discussing to organise Apple Daily in the UK and he hss been a part of the discussion.

He believes the intention of the shutdown is to protect the safety of the employees, and the possibility of publishing Apple Daily overseas would be very risky to the employees in Hong Kong.

He pointed out that it could be a reason for the court to deny a bail for its employees.

He said he had also chatted with Jeff, who distributed his own version of 'Apple Daily' for the gathering.

Jeff promised he will not act on behalf of Apple Daily. Jeff also told Stand News that he would not dare to represent Apple Daily as he is not qualified to do so, but he's just doing what he thinks he should do.

FTSE Russell to remove more China stocks from indexes over U.S. ban

Global index publisher FTSE Russell said it will delete a further 20 Chinese companies from its indexes after user feedback on an updated U.S. executive order that bars U.S. investment in companies with alleged ties to China's military.

U.S. President Joe Biden signed the order on June 3 that bans U.S. entities from investing in dozens of Chinese companies with alleged ties to defence or surveillance technology sectors, replacing an earlier order under Donald Trump.

In a statement on its website, FTSE Russell said the additional Chinese companies will be deleted from its indexes on July 28.

China links pose a threat to academic freedom in Britain

The writer is Conservative MP for Tonbridge and Malling and chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee

Cardiff University published a job advertisement last month with an unusual requirement: prospective applicants “must have native or near-native fluency in Mandarin”. Perhaps not so unusual in a language school, but this was for the position of lecturer in music composition.

Britain’s universities have changed. Over the past decade, our higher education system has become increasingly reliant on China for a steady stream of students, research partnerships and funding.

HKGovernment's Crackdown Causes Hundreds of District Councillors to Resign; Tommy Cheung Sau-yin criticizes: “Why leaving when we've done nothing wrong?”

In Hong Kong, directly elected district councillors are expected to take an oath of allegiance for the Basic Law within July 2021. However, a recent notice from the government claimed that the district councillors would be disqualified and asked to returned the salary they receivrd since they took office.

If this is the case, each person would have to pay back more than one million Hong Kong dollars.

As of July 9, nearly 100 pro-democracy #DistrictCouncillors announced their resignation one after another, while some of them said they would stay behind.

Yuen Long District Councillor #Tommy Sau-yin Cheung announced on social media platform on the morning of July 9, 2021 that he would not resign.

Cheung said, “I decide to uphold the public authorization since winning the election, and continue to take the last path of my political life”. He also stated that he would not regret making this decision.

He said the government has no justifiable reason nor legal basis to deprive him of his qualification as a District Councillor.

Tuen Mun District Councillor Kenneth Cheung Kam-hung pointed out that the government was using intimidation tactics to make District Councillors retreat and weaken the voice of the opposition.

Vice Chairman of Kwai Tsing District Council Cheung Man-lung commented that the resignation of a large amount of pro-democracy District Councillors will paralyze the district-level work and will cause inconvenience to fellow citizens.

#RTHK Requires Interns to Declare Allegiance; Students Opt to Give up the Offer

Part 2:

Third-year journalism student, Ms Chan, was originally assigned to be an intern at the Journalism Department of the public boradcaster RTHK in Hong Kong in mid-June, 2021.

Chan said she has been listening to RTHK since small, and it was her dream to become a reporter since ten years. Nevertheless, Chan felt distressed about whether she shall sign the declaration of allegiance as required by the station.

Chan believes that undertaking an internship at RTHK is a precious experience. If she gives up the opportunity, her graduation may be delayed.

She thought, "even if I postpone my intern to next year, I am not sure if I can find a news outlet with a conscience to work in."

Neverthelesd, Chan decided to give up her internship at RTHK. "It is not worth signing a risky document just for an internship. I reject the offer. Let's see if there is still space for journalists [to survive] next year. Otherwise, I would rather tske another course." She said, "It is not necessary to become a reporter just because I wanted to. As a result, it would not be a big deal if I don't have an internship with RTHK."

China indulging in 'unrestricted warfare' against India, says report

Two Chinese officers in 1999 put forward different methods to beat the US, these were the methods that could be used by nations that could not compete with the West in terms of military

In their book, Unrestricted Warfare: China's Master Plan to Destroy America, they suggested ways to avoid a military confrontation with the US military, these ways included targeting financial systems, economical setbacks, taking infrastructure under control, cyber attacks, political propaganda and other 'indirect wars', said Author Janet Levy in American Thinker.
Undoubtedly, these tactics have been accepted by the Chinese government, especially, against the US ally India.

Closure looms for Hong Kong's pro-democracy Apple Daily after raids

The pro-democracy Hong Kong newspaper Apple Daily looked set to close for good by Saturday following police raids and the arrest of executives - a move that critics say undermines the city's status as a free and open society as Beijing tightens its grip.

Mark Simon, an adviser to the jailed owner and staunch Beijing critic Jimmy Lai, told Reuters on Monday the newspaper would be forced to shut "in a matter of days" after authorities froze access to the firm's core operating capital, needed for staff wages and other expenses, on national security grounds.

#Wikipedia wars: How Hongkongers and mainland Chinese are battling to set the #narrative

//Wikipedia now hosts over one million articles in its Chinese edition alone. Entries can be written and edited by any internet user as long as these are supported by reliable news sources, although no original research is allowed.

Wikipedia volunteers in Hong Kong say they face increasing problems finding a diverse range of reliable media sources to cite....

Their mainland counterparts are pushing for the use of Chinese state media as reliable news sources to channel their version of events.

Hong Kong users also fear that it will become harder for them to get elected as administrators on Wikipedia – a role which gives them power to adjudicate on editing decisions and invoke the website’s guiding rules and principles – because the Chinese version of the website is dominated by mainland users.

A Chinese Wikipedia article about the Yuen Long MTR mob attack in July 2019 had recorded a whopping 1,912 edits as of July 8, with 473 media sources cited in footnotes.

As Apple Daily closed last month, some users attempted to purge Wikipedia of news outlets deemed pro-democracy. One user named “Walter Grassroot” started removing Apple Daily news links in articles en masse, hours before the newspaper’s official shutdown on June 23.

In his user history, Walter Grassroot left a comment supportive of another user MINQI, who appeared sympathetic to pro-China viewpoints, saying: “People supporting Taiwan, Hong Kong, Manchu and Falun Gong independence exist because of financial support in the background” and they must set up a foundation for efficient “large scale clean-ups” of articles in the future...

Screenshots that surfaced on Wednesday showed users on the Chinese QQ messaging app for mainland Wikipedia editors discussing reporting their Hong Kong peers to the city’s national security police hotline.

“We should report those from the Hong Kong user group,” a QQ user under the handle “Walter Grassroot” wrote after another user posted an image of the hotline’s details. “Nice idea,” another replied...//

The three top officials are Commissioner of Customs and Excise #HermesTang; Director of Immigration #AuKaWing; and the Undersecretary for Security, #SonnyAu. The banquet cost at least HKD 2,380 per head.

Lam claimed that “they didn’t know what was on the menu" and they couldn’t just "stand up and leave when they saw abalone."

Lam called on people to look at the incident in a "more humanised way”.

In the same program, Lam also openly said that she 'does not expect" #JohnLee, former Secretsry for Security and the new Chief Secretary, to do much, other than national security issues. Lam added that Lee, the second highest government official in the city, was not familiar with "poverty alleviation, youth or ethnic minority works".
