"You have chosen the side of the tanks"

The following essay was written by #AuKaLun, a veteran journalist in Hong Kong:

"On a Causeway Bay street in the evening of 4 June, 2021, my attention was focused in particular on the faces of the policemen. Most of them had plodding eyes, dragging their feet and yelled occasionally to embolden themselves. Some were wearing glasses of scholarly looks, some have fair skin. And there was one who is stout and out of proportionally broad, seemingly unwell – take care.

Not surprisingly, these long arms (policemen) of the regime are just like any ordinary citizens like you and me. Some are tall, some short, some fat and some skinny. As in the Berlin Golden Bear best file “There Is No Evil”, there is really very little difference between them and us. If we take one step, we would have crossed over to their side."

China Blocks Didi From App Stores Days After Mega U.S. IPO

China’s cyberspace regulator ordered app stores to remove Didi Chuxing, dealing a major blow to a ride-hailing giant that just days ago pulled off one of the largest U.S. initial public offerings of the past decade.

The Cyberspace Administration of China announced the ban Sunday, citing serious violations on Didi Global Inc.’s collection and usage of personal information, without elaborating. That unusually swift decision came two days after the regulator said it was starting a cybersecurity review of the company.

The Observer view on China’s human rights abuses in Hong Kong

China did not wait long to demonstrate its contempt for last weekend’s criticism by G7 countries of human rights abuses in Hong Kong. By ordering the arrest of the editor-in-chief and four senior executives of the Apple Daily newspaper for allegedly conspiring with “foreign forces”, Xi Jinping and the Communist party sent a crude message of defiance to the west.

That China’s president and his Beijing apparatchiks were responsible for this provocatively timed injustice is not in serious doubt. Hong Kong’s 2019-20 pro-democracy protests, which Apple Daily supported, shook the CCP’s power monopoly and amour propre in ways not seen since Tiananmen Square. It has been punishing the ex-British colony ever since.

HK #University Management Reports Students' Union Council to National Security Police

On July 8, 2021, the #StudentUnion Council of the University of Hong Kong (#HKUSU) passed a motion to express condolences to #LeungKinFai, a 50-year-old Hong Kong man who died after knifing a policeman and stabbing himself on July 1.

The act of mourning by the Student Union has been condemned by the government and the University.

The Alibaba-owned South China Morning Post (#SCMP) cited the chairman of HKU Council #ArthurLi, a pro-Beijing figure, and reported that the university management 'welcomed' authorities to investigate whether their students has violated the #NationalSecurityLaw. The source claimed the students involved could be expelled by the University.

At 1am on July 9, the Student Union Council announced the resignation of its members and the withdrawal of the motion passed. Their Facebook page and the website were also removed.

Stand News Roll Out New Strategies to Protect Journalists and Readers

On June 27, 2021, online news outlet #StandNews issued a statement stating that they will take down articles published before and during May 2021 and will stop receiving sponsorship.

The decision was announced following the shutdown of the city's pro-democracy newspaper #AppleDaily.

Six directors of the parent company, including Ka Fai Yee (余家輝) ,TC Chow (周達智), Margaret Ng Ngoi-yee (吳靄儀), Denise Ho Wan-see (何韻詩), Christine Fang Meng-sang (方敏生) and Joseph Lian (練乙錚), are resigning from the board.

The news outlet indicated that they will continue to operate. The remaining two chief editors, Tony Tsoi and Apple Daily’s former associate publisher Chan Pui-man's husband Chung Pui-kuen (鍾沛權) will remain in office.

In the statement, Stand News pointed out that in order to avoid wasting supporters' donations in the event of an incident, they would pause patronage and immediately suspend the monthly member sponsorship program. They will also stop accepting new members and new sponsorship.

Stand News wrote that because of the approaching literary persecution, the company decided to temporarily take down blog articles, re-posted articles and reader contributions published before May 2021; while continue to back up the content of the website.

According to the current financial reserve, it is sufficient to meet the expenses for the next 9 to 12 months.

The news outlet indicated that since May 2021, the employment contracts of employees who have been employed for more than six months were terminated. Their annual salary was settled at an amount higher than the compensation required by law, and their contracts were re-signed at terms no lower than the original ones.

Stand News called on supporters in their statement to redirect their current support to other independent media outlets, freelance journalists, commentators and journalism organizations that uphold freedom of speech and press in Hong Kong.

WeChat deletes Chinese university LGBT accounts in fresh crackdown

Chinese tech giant Tencent's WeChat social media platform has deleted dozens of LGBT accounts run by university students, saying some had broken rules on information on the internet, sparking fear of a crackdown on gay content online.

Members of several LGBT groups told Reuters that access to their accounts was blocked late on Tuesday and they later discovered that all of their content had been deleted.

"Many of us suffered at the same time," said the account manager of one group who declined to be identified due to the sensitivity of the issue.

In a Muffled Hong Kong, Bookstores Offer Freedom of Thought

When Hong Kong public libraries pulled books about dissent from circulation last month, Pong Yat Ming made an offer to his customers: They could read some of the same books, free, at his store.

Mr. Pong, 47, founded the shop, Book Punch, in 2020, after Beijing imposed a national security law in response to the antigovernment protests that rocked Hong Kong in 2019. The law broadly defined acts of subversion and secession against China, making much political speech potentially illegal, and it threatened severe punishment, including life imprisonment, for offenders.

#RTHK Requires Intern to Declare Allegiance; Students Decline Offer

Part 1

Mr. Chan, a third-year journalism student, received an internship offer from RTHK, a public broadcaster in Hong Kong, in May 2021. The internship was supposed to start in mid-June.

However, in early June, Chan received a notice from his teacher that a declaration of allegiance must be signed for the internship to be undertaken at the said station..

Chan originally planed to take the oath, although he has no intention of joining the government after graduation.

Until a few days before his internship started, he leant that Hong Kong and Macao residents are required to declare whether one has ever "sworn or signed a declaration of supporting the Basic Law and allegiance to the Hong Kong and Macao governments" when migrating to Taiwan.

As Chan planned to join an exchange program in Taiwan in September, he worried that the oath would affect his entry.

"Am I actually taking this oath just for a two-month internship?" Chan asked himself.

In the end, he changed his mind and told his teacher that he would give up this internship.

Since his degree program requires students to complete an internship at a news outlet before they graduate, Chan later underwent his training at a radio station.

Hong Kong Woman searched by the police for holding chives

On the night of July 1, 2021, #LeungKinFai stabbed himself after injuring a police officer outside the SOGO Department Store in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong.

Many citizens gathered to mourn Leung's passing, yet the government repeatedly warned that the gathering could incite hatred, and people should stop mourning.

On July 7, a group of police was deployed in the area. A woman holding chives was stopped and searched by the police at around 7pm.

The woman was emotional during the search and prayed with flowers which was kept in her bags. She expressed her fear to the police but was warned to stop her behaviour. The woman was let go after being warned and she left with the flower tied on her head.

She did not respond to the reporter's questions and only stated she wanted to walk to SOGO, and left immediately afterwards.

Police Bust Dinner Gathering due to Rape Report; Hong Kong's Top Government Officials Violate Gathering Ban

Several top government officials including some heads of disciplinary forces in Hong Kong were found violating the gathering ban, as Stand News revealed on July 7, 2021.

Commissioner of Customs and Excise, Hermes Tang; Director of Immigration, Au Ka-wang; and the Undersecretary for Security, Sonny Au were all fined in a dinner event that took place in Wan Chai on March 2, 2021.

According to two sources, among the 9 people involved, at least one top manager of a China-owned property developer that is listed in Hong Kong Stock Market was present at the dinner. The related company, however, did not respond to the inquiry of Stand News.

The said dinner was discovered when the police investigated a rape case. According to sources, the rape took place in the same venue as the dinner, which is a residential unit in Wan Chai.

The man who was arrested and charged for attempted rape worked for a China-owned enterprise and had participated in the dinner gathering.

On July 8, 2021, the heads of customs and immigration department issued two separate but identical statements, claiming that they have paid the fine.

However, they refused to answer the journalists questions with regard to the nature and the purpose of the dinner and the conflict of interests. The government officials did not revealed whether they were treated.
