Amnesty International Report Describes Xinjiang's Situation as a “Dystopian Hell Landscape"
Amnesty International characterized the Chinese government’s actions against the Turkic Muslim population as a “crime against humanity” on Thursday (10 June). They publish a 160-page report, stating Uyghurs and Muslim minorities in Xinjiang are facing systematic abuse, including the torture tool “tiger chair” that a slight move can lead to great pain to the person in the seat.
Recently, many governments and international organizations accuse China of human rights violations. Among them, Amnesty International has been investigating the Xinjiang issue for years. This report describes the Chinese government's intention to remove Muslim cultures and traditions within the territory by different means. The report also states the government regards Turkic Muslim in the region as “extremists”. The report alleges that since most Xinjiang people are afraid of being imprisoned or badly treated, they stop praying nor following any act of Islam observance, including clothing, retouching and speech. Some locals said to Amnesty International, “We cannot say 'let peace be with you (as-salamu-alaykum)'. The government even ban Koran, prayer mats and other religious products.
The report also quotes evidence from Turkic Muslim that they are detained in Chinese government-called “re-education camps", with abuse by the authority. Turkic Muslim women were even forced to accept the system of sterilization or birth control.

Hong Kong’s Biggest Pro-Democracy Newspaper Prints Final Edition
On June 23, 2021, crowds of Hong Kong residents gathered in support outside the headquarters of Apple Daily, one of the last bastions of media resistance to Beijing, as it sent its final edition to print. The paper announced it would close after the arrests of senior leadership this week under the draconian national security law introduced last year. Banks froze the newspaper’s assets to avoid being charged themselves.
The rollout of the national security law has seen successive groups targeted: first protest leaders, then democratic politicians, and now journalists. More than 800 Apple Daily staff have lost their jobs while Hong Kong has lost its long-cherished freedom of speech.

The police in the Chinese region of Xinjiang are still buying hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of American DNA equipment despite warnings from the U.S. government that the sale of such technologies could be used to enable human rights abuses in the region.
The U.S. government has tried to prevent the sale of DNA sequencers, test kits and other products made by American firms to the police in Xinjiang for years, amid concerns raised by scientists and human rights groups that the authorities could use the tools to build systems to track people. In 2019, the Trump administration banned the sale of American goods to most law enforcement agencies in Xinjiang unless the companies received a license. And in 2020, Washington warned that companies selling biometric technology and other products to Xinjiang should be aware of the “reputational, economic and legal risks.”

On June 20, 2021, the shop placed a front-page advertisement on Apple Daily, following the police's raid, arrests and the freezing of assets.
Soon after that, the shop has been spitefully harassed, receiving nearly a hundred anonymous phone calls in one morning.
Without much alternative, the shop must stop answering all phone calls which impacted badly on their business operation. The shop called for their customers to contact them via other means.
Owner of the optical shop, Michael expressed that someone put up pro-government posters outside their shop to indicate disagreement, so he was not surprised and concerned about more nuisance.
He reiterated that he took no regrets in putting up an advertisement on Apple Daily. There were also new customers visiting them after seeing the ad, Michael said.

July 1, 2021 marks the establishment of the Hong Kong SAR 24 years ago and that of the Chinese Communist Party (#CCP) 100 years ago.
While July 1 is also a day where large-scale pro-democracy demonstrations are held every year since the handover, the Hong Kong authorities have been using different means to curb protests in the territory. According to the government, 10,000 police officers would be deployed in Hong Kong.
Not only did the police cordon off the entire Victoria Park, hundreds of uniformed polices surrounded and searched passersby in Causeway Bay.
Besides recording the faces of the passersby, the police hoisted a yellow flag warning of the civilians in the shoppers' area that they might have violated the law.
Police also blocked almost all the exits of Fashion Walk, a high-end shopling mall at Paterson Street. The police also entered the mall, intimidating civilians.
