Prosecutor: Leaving Hong Kong after Attending June 4 Tiananmen Massacre Vigil is Absconding

In Hong Kong, 26 pro-democracy activists were charged with "unlawful assembly" by attending the Tiananmen Massacre Vigil in Hong Kong in 2020.

The prosecution attempted to apply for the imposition of bail conditions prohibiting defendants from leaving Hong Kong. Among the 26 defendents, former Demosisto chairperson Nathan Law Kwun-chung and Sunny Cheung, former spokesman for the Hong Kong Higher Institutions International Affairs Delegation (#HKIAD) had left Hong Kong.

The Magistrate pointed out that the summon was made on August 6, 2020 while Nathan Law had left Hong Kong as early as June 27, 2020.

Prosecution, however, insisted that by attending the "unlawful assembly" on June 4, “Law knows well he has breached the law.” Co-defendants in the court all laughed at this unprofessional explanation.

The Movement should be localized — Exiled Hongkonger Sunny Cheung’s resistance imagination

Part 1

The China-imposed National Security Law has driven fear into the hearts of many people in Hong Kong. In the past few months, “Immigration”, “Exile” and “Political asylum” have taken many of the city’s front-page news reports. Activists of the pan-democracy political camps and protesters have fled the city one after another.

Facing fierce police grip, social distancing restriction and an immense sense of helplessness, the resistance movement in Hong Kong has come to a halt and receded. This was followed by a mass resignation of all pro-democracy legislators, which has put an end to the resistance in the legislature front.

“International lobbying” has become a buoy to salvage Hongkongers from despair. Whenever the news on US sanctions against Chinese or Hong Kong Officials is released, it always lights up hopes in some Hong Kong people.

#SunnyCheung Kwan-yang, former spokesman of #NetworkDIPLO who was active in international lobbying, decided to leave Hong Kong in August 2020 for a life of exile.

In his video interview with Stand News taken place in 2020, he is candid about his loneliness and struggling, as if ‘transcending between Hell and Earth’.

Being abroad, he keeps working on the international front, but he is also frank about its limitations. ‘We are not bringing an army back [to Hong Kong].’

‘Outside Hong Kong, many efforts become cheap.’ In view of the prevailing gloom and outrages in political reality, he urges Hongkongers to bear hope in darkness and turn this hope into a strong force of resistance...

He saw some brothers in exile with psychological trauma, fearing to reach out. ‘In order to help those who left Hong Kong as a result of this movement to walk out from the shadow and trauma; it is important to connect with the local governments and civil organizations for financial support so that they can continue with their study and have access to counselling service.’

Hongkonger in Exile: "I use my lifetime to defend the Hongkonger identity"

Part 1:

Part 2:

#SunnyCheung Kwan-yang was a former spokesman of #NetworkDIPLO who was active in international lobbying. He decided to leave Hong Kong in August 2020 for a life of exile.

In an interview in 2020, Chrung expressed he missed the time of setting street booths during elections in Hong Kong. In contrast to dealing with high-rank politicians in international lobbying now, he was at that time really getting in touch with Hongkongers, chatting with passers-by, and enjoying snacks from supporters. ‘Interacting with the people, talking to them closely, are what I treasure.’

While he is now abroad and safe, the fact that his comrades-in-arms are being arrested one after another makes him feel guilty and struggling. ‘Was it a correct decision to leave Hong Kong? Have I abandoned my comrades-in-arms?’ Upheavals in Hong Kong sadden him. ‘Lonely exile. No more connection with people in Hong Kong. As a stranger, everything needs to start from scratch.’

‘Every day I need to remind myself not to indulge in sadness. I need to become stronger.’

Asked if he had any words for the brothers in Hong Kong, he wanted to say ‘cheers and take care’, but held his tongue on second thought.

‘As a matter of fact, efforts we make abroad are always cheap. We can only play the role of supporter. We talk about solidarity and support, cheering up brothers and sisters, and asking them to take care, but except talking we can do nothing else…’ He advised Hongkongers that ‘despite the feebleness, gloom and absurdity of reality, [Hongkongers] still choose to be hopeful. It is all because hope forms the very basis of survival and resistance. This hope is the very source of strength.’

‘During exile, I reshuffle my life, which is a process of spiritual awakening. I will hold on to my faith, and use my lifetime to defend the Hongkonger identity.’

Living abroad and bearing in heart Hong Kong his homeland – this is Cheung’s promise to Hong Kong.

Exiled activists launch pro-democracy magazine to keep alive the spirit of “#BeWater

The first issue came out in January this year. Called ‘Flow HK’ in English, the magazine's editor-in-chief is exiled activist #SunnyCheung, and its editorial board includes other well-known campaigners in the #AntiELAB movement.

The Chinese name of the new quarterly magazine, "be water", is named after the tactic protesters used to evade suppression by police. The phrase originated in a maxim from Hong Kong's home-grown martial arts legend Bruce Lee, outlining a philosophy of being flexible or formless.

In his piece for the inaugural edition, Cheung urges Hongkongers to find ways to remain united and not to give up. He says that the resistance movement is now like a buried stream, ready to become a river. "Overseas Hong Kongers must fight, and will not give up on their dream to go home. If you are not free in Hong Kong, then what is the use of freedom?"

Eight Hong Kong Exiled Activists Launched the "2021 Hong Kong Charter" to prevent the Hong Kong protest bubble.

On 14 March, 2021, diasporic Hong Kong activists, including Nathan Law Kwun-Chung, Ted Hui Chi-Fung and Brian Leung Kai-ping, issued the "2021 Hong Kong Charter", suggesting the protest direction for overseas Hong Kongers.

The Charter initiators stated at their press conference about the probability of the Hong Kong overseas protest bubble. Thus, they would like to unite Hong Kongers through this Charter.

In the press conference, Brian Leung said that Hong Kongers continued uttering to the world since 2019, but Hong Kongers can no longer speak freely. They should connect global protesters networks, understand local people's lives and find out channels to continue communicating with the world. The Charter includes the belief of Hong Kongers overseas and advocating the protest direction at different levels which were divided into three parts, Hong Kong, China and International.

The "2021 Hong Kong Charter" is led by Nathan Law Kwun-Chung, Sunny Cheung Kwan-yang, Ted Hui Chi-Fung, Brian Leung Kai-Ping, Glacier Kwong Chung-Ching, Ray Wong Toi-Yeung and Baggio Leung Chung-Hang.

The Charter states that Hong Kongers have started fighting for a democratic system since the 1980s. Nevertheless, the Chinese Communist Party (#CCP) nature, a one-party system, remains unchanged. After breaching Sino-British Joint Declaration repeatedly, one-country-two-systems were declared to be dead. This Charter aims to unite overseas Hong Kongers and cohere their power at the international level to prepare for the protest.

In the press conference, Sunny Cheung mentioned that many different democracy movements had initiated Charters in the past, such as Nobel Peace Prize Liu Xiaobo launched "Charter 08". So, He would record Hong Kongers' voices through this Charter.

#JoshuaWong: Don't Let the World Change Us

In almost 2 years since the Anti-ELAB movement broke out in 2019, Hong Kong's representative figures of the pro-democracy "resistance" camp are either in jail or in exile.

Among them, former lawmaker #EddieChu, former journalist #GywnethHo, district councillors #LesterShum and #TiffanyYuen have been detained and denied bail since late February 2021. They are among the 47 pro-democracy activists arrested for joining the primary election in 2020.

Former chair of #Demisisto #NathanLaw and former spokesman for the Hong Kong Higher Institutions International Affairs Delegation (#HKIAD) #SunnyCheung have to sever ties with their family in Hong Kong and live in exile.

On March 30, 2021, district councillor #JannelleLeung and activist Joshua Wong, alongside Shum and Yuen, were trialed for taking part in an "unauthorised assembly" on #June4 in Victoria Park in 2020.

They were among 24 pro-democracy figures who were charged for participating in the annual candlelight vigil to commemorate the victims of the 1989 #TiananmenSquareMassacre in Beijing. The vigil was for the first time banned by the Hong Kong police in 2020. It is still uncertain that whether the annual rally could be held in 2021.

The four pro-democracy activists admitted to joining the rally and were remanded in custody. In the courtroom, Joshua Wong yelled, "Even if we cannot change the world, don't let the world change us."

The 24-year-old Wong is currently serving his sentence for surrounding the police headquarters during the #AntiELAB protest, while being additionally charged with other offences connecting to the primary election and June 4th #vigil.
