Hong Kong Former Lawmaker Runs “Wall-fare” Office Next to Detention Center to Supporting Protesters and Families

After his resignation as the representative of the social welfare sector in the city's legislature, Bottle Shiu Ka-Chun focuses on improving prisoners’ rights and rented an office for a newly established organisation, “Wall-fare”, in a commercial building next to the Lai Chi Kok Reception Center.

On top of supporting people in jail, he also supports pro-democracy protestors and their families. His long-term goal is to develop a resources center for prisoners.

Shiu picked the location as he hopes families of protestors can make contact quickly and directly. He has disclosed to the landlord that this office's functions are to provide services for neighbourhood, offer emotional support, serve as a venue for client meetings and group discussions.

“Wall-fare” has two part-time staff sorting and handing letters from the event called “Writing with You”. Almost a year since 24 Jan 2020, they handled more than 6,000 letters received via the “Writing with You” initiative. Shiu fully understands how essential letters are to people in jail. “As prisoners, they can only wait for letters anxiously,” he said.

The crime of carrying two cans of spray paint

The 22-year-old man (defendant) had originally planned on attending the rallies at Victoria Park. However, police had already started shooting tear gas canisters by the time he arrived. Once hit by the tear gas, he and his friends ran for cover.

Along the way, a kind stranger handed them a bag of supplies and rinsed their eyes with water and saline solution. Upon taking the bag, he did not check its content right away and only found out later that there were facial tissues, wet wipes, crackers and two cans of spray paint.

As two spray paints were found in the defendant’s bag, the judge said he “couldn’t understand at” why he simply took the parcel from a stranger without checking what’s in the bag.

Protest granny ‘prepared to die’ for Hong Kong’s freedoms

64-year-old Alexandra Wong, younger activists affectionately call her as “Grandma Wong”, was a regular sight during demonstrations in 2019. For Ms Wong, the flag which is despised by the Chinese Communist party as representing British colonial rule in Hong Kong was the ultimate symbol of defiance.

Wong was caught and detained while commuting to her home in Shenzhen across the border in the mainland China. After a 14-month absence, Ms Wong was back and protesting again in Hong Kong.

“I am prepared to die,” said Wong. “They will oppress us if we don’t protest and we will lose more freedoms.”

“Grandma Wong is an inspiration to generations of pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong,” said Lord Alton of Liverpool, a member of the group backing the Nobel Prize campaign.

#AgnesChow: Trying Hard to Adapt to Life in Prison

Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Agnes Chow, a former member of #Demosisto, was arrested and imprisoned for 10 months on charges of inciting, organizing and partaking illegal assembly.

A friend of her visited Chow during the Lunar New Year and wrote on her Facebook afterwards. She said Chow’s life in prison was mostly about reading, listening to the radio and looking forward to receiving letters.

She said Chow has just finished reading #NorwegianWood and wanted to carry on reading books by Japanese authors #HarukiMurakami and #KeigoHigashino.

Chow told her friend to send gratitude to her supporters, saying that she is working hard to adapt to prison life.

"During the time in prison, my mental and health conditions have not been well. I hope I can take a break and regain my health once being discharged in June," said Chow.

Former Chinese Staff of Zoom Wanted by FBI for Monitoring and Sabotaging Video Conferences Concerning the June 4th Tiananmen Square Massacre and Hong Kong Protests

A former Chinese staff of Zoom, a video conference software company, was charged by federal prosecutors from the US Department of Justice on December 18th for sabotaging and disrupting video conferences concerning the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the June 4th Tiananmen Square Massacre. The staff was a 39-year-old man named Xinjiang Jin who was based in China. Jin and his associates had allegedly sent IP addresses and email addresses of the video conference participants, as well as conference passwords and other sensitive data directly to Chinese law enforcement agencies. FBI also revealed case-related emails indicating Jin was monitoring conferences for China, including those related to Hong Kong protests. Jin is currently wanted by the FBI.

Why China’s Hong Kong crackdown could backfire

The Year of the Ox has begun darkly for Hong konger.

leaders ultimately must respond to voters, many of whom care deeply about human rights and are demanding tougher policies toward China. When European democracies finally join the Biden administration’s nascent anti-China coalition, the credit should go not to America, but to Xi.

Such a coalition could impose painful costs on China for its actions in Hong Kong. After all, financial sanctions would cause chaos in global markets. But they still have a wide array of other options to squeeze China.

Decoupling China from global technology supply chains currently seems inconceivable, but could become a reality if the coalition agrees to a new arrangement similar to the Coordinating Committee for Multilateral Export Controls, which choked off Western technology transfers to the Soviet bloc during the Cold War.

Western democracies could also deny Chinese leaders the international prestige they seek by curtailing high-level exchanges and vigorously contesting Chinese influence in multilateral organizations.

Democracy activists freed from Chinese jail back in custody in Hong Kong

Eight Hong Kong democracy activists, jailed in China last year after being captured at sea, arrived back in the city and were immediately detained on Mar 22 by Hong Kong Police.

“(Authorities) never communicated with the family about the whole arrangement so the family members are forced to come here and wait all day until now,” activist and barrister Chow Hang-tung, speaking on behalf of a concern group for the defendants, said at a press briefing outside a Hong Kong police station close to the mainland border.

Among the eight is Andy Li, arrested under a sweeping national security law Beijing imposed on the Asian financial hub in June 2020 that critics say is aimed at crushing dissent.

In Dec 2020, a Chinese court sentenced 10 of the 12 to between seven months and three years in jail. Defendants Tang Kai-yin and Quinn Moon, who were sentenced to three and two years, respectively, are still in southern Guangdong province.

HK Police Arrest #GrannyWong
for "participating in unauthorized assembly" ALONE

On Sunday, May 30, 2021, Granny Wong was arrested by the police at around 15:19 in Wan Chai for "participating in unauthorized assembly".

Granny Wong was alone when the police surrounded and took her away by a police vechicle near the police headquarters.

Earlier, some pro-democracy group in Hong Kong had filed a protest authorization request for May 30, 2021 to commemorate the 1989 June 4th Tiananmen Massacre and condemn the Chinese Communist Party for the brutal crackdown.

The protest, alongside the annual candlelight vigil that has been taking place in Hong Kong's Victoria Park since 1990, was rejected by the Hong Kong police.

On the day, police continued to stop and search passers-by near Southampton Playground in Wan Chai, which is part of the protest route supposedly.

Pro-democracy #Hongkongers Make 2-Person March to GovHQ, Hoping to Fulfill "Under the Pot" Promise One Day

The HK Police has issued an notice against a march request from LSD and three other civic groups. As such, Ms. Hong and Ms. Wong started by themselves today at 2pm to march from Victoria Park, following the route from previous years. At around 5pm, they had arrived outside of Government HQ.

Ms. Hong pointed out that she had participated in the July 1st march for many years. "If they don't let us walk, then I'll walk myself. I think this is not a issue." Ms. Wong said, a note of resentment in her voice. "There's a lot I want to hold on to, so I'll do what I can ".

Out of the many times she's been to GHQ, Ms. Hong said, the most profound time was on June 12 two years ago, when she had tasted tear gas for the first time in her life here. Seeing that all these places from the past are now behind giant barriers, Ms. Hong can only sigh. Comparing today's two-person march to the million marching in the streets in the past, Ms. Wong lamented, "I would be lying to you if I don't feel down, but I'm trying to keep myself from collapsing." Ms. Hong also pointed out that Hongkongers need rest, but hoped that we understand that "resting is preparing for a longer road ahead."

Ms. Hong said that if there is an opportunity to march, her short term demands would be unfreezing Apple Daily's assets, and releasing all political prisoners. Long term demands would be for authentic, fair elections. She also had a message for Hongkongers: to "see hope in the far off future" and for officials to "not serve the authority, but Hongkongers."

Although the "under the pot" area in LegCo has now been cordoned off, the two of them went as close as possible and took photos with their stuffed animal companions, laughing bitterly, "Hopefully one day, we can all fulfill our promise to meet 'under the pot'."

Pleading for the First #NationalSecurityLaw Conviction -- Hongkonger Raises Sign in Silence: "If there is no jury, does #CommonLaw still exist?"

The first National Security Law case against 24-year-old Tong Ying-Kit resulted in a conviction on "inciting secession" and "terrorism".

On Jul 29, 2021 is the day for mitigation, and the sentencing is scheduled on Jul 30.

Michael, in his 70s this year, raised a sign he handwrote: "If there is no jury, does Common Law still exist?" at Taikoo Plaza and stood in silence.

In response to the conviction of Tong, he bluntly replied, "It's already expected" and criticized that "under Common Law, large cases that go to the High court must have juries present- why isn't there one all of a sudden?"

"The three judges collude with each other, and it is no different from Mainland China." He lamented, "Now there is no law. Rule of law is dead."

Michael predicted that Tong, "even without life imprisonment, will face more than 20 years [of jail]."

He also described that currently, "NSL rules us all," so action does not change much and he fears arrest. However, he still came out and expressed his sentiments. "I'm a hardliner- if you don't shout they'd think you're dead."

#NationalSecurityLaw Case in Hong Kong: Prosecution Cites Chinese Law Books to Assist Judge's Sentencing

The sentencing of Hong Kong's first National Security Law case is scheduled on July 30, 2021.

On July 29, the prosecution revealed that they had prepared Chinese law books for judges in Hong Kong court to review, believing that those sources were related to the case, and could provide strong support to the judges.

According to sources, the law books cited were written in simplified Chinese, named "Comprehension and Application of Criminal Law Provisions and Judicial Practice" (刑法条文理解适用与司法实务全书). However, the judges pointed out that those sources were for reference only. The interpretation of NSL would be based on Hong Kong's law principle. In regards to simulataenous sentencing, there is a large dispute among judges.

Tong Ying Kit pleads: I'm not a bad person, just did something very, very stupid

As "Inciting secession" and "Terrorism" are both serious crime, Tong, only 24 years old, is facing the highest sentence of life imprisonment.

On July 29, the Defence, in their plea, cited Tong's upbringing, the death of his parents, and his grandmother's cancer. If he faced a serious sentence, he would not see his grandmother for the last time.

The Defence expressed that Tong "is not a bad person, but did a very, very stupid thing and feels true remorse", and that "he knows he deserves punishment, but hopes the court can be light in sentencing."

The prosecution side, however, emphasized that according to the NSL, only when a suspect surrenders or exposes others can sentences be reduced.

Chow's partner Ye Du, a Chinese human rights activist and writer, sent his marriage proposal in a letter.

He expressed his feelings of longing. He saying the darkest time before the dawn can be more remarkable in their hearts. Hw also mentioned that this big wave of time disrupted their original imagination to the future, bringing an expected development.

The proposal letter by Ye Du was published in MingPao today.

The letter was written on July 13th, the anniversary of the death of Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo. Ye Du proposed marriage by letter to Tonyee, mentioning, "You said you want to have a romantic proposal. There always has a strange way to propose. But what is compatible with you being in a small jail and me being in a large jail... What is compatible with having a mutual memory on a special date, the anniversary of the death of Liu Xiaobo? What is compatible and more remarkable to the romantic moment under this darkness before the dawn? Tung, would you marry me?"

Pro-democracy Citizen vows: I will be among the last ones to leave Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, the first case of the #NationalSecurityLaw was trialed without jury but judges appointed by the authorities in late July, 2021. The Court put 24-year-old #TongYingKit behind bars for 9 years for "inciting secession and committing terrorist activities".

Disappointed by a trial without jury, some citizens found it still a “fortunate case” with a so-called “lenient” sentence term as many are anticipating a prison term for no less than 10 years.

Tong’s supporters said their support will continue, no matter how long it will be.

Outside the courtroom, around 50 citizens gathered to see Tong off. Among them, Jason said he couldn’t enter the viewing gallery to hear the trial, although he came half an hour earlier to queue for tickets.

Jason told reporters that although he has a Thai heritage which gives him a natural “exit plan” to leave Hong Kong at any time he wants, he finds root in Hong Kong. “I will be among the last ones to leave this city.”

Looking around at other supporters of Tong Ying-kit, Jason said he still has hope for Hong Kong, “some people might think I am naïve, but I see solidarity among pro-democracy supporters and there remains hope for Hong Kong.”

In the past two years, Jason has been following up on court cases and supporting those pro-democracy protesters being arrested and trialed. He refuted the rumors on social media that there were only few supporters in the court room to show support to every protester.

Jason claimed that he will not give up but live his life to witness the change. He asked HongKongers to hang on and support each other, “In this losing battle, what's better than supporting each other till the end?”

China Consulate in Manchester Drags Hong Kong Protesters Inside Gate and Assaults Them, Damaging Props and Tearing Out Hair

At the China Consulate in Manchester, UK yesterday (Oct 16), a group of Hongkongers gathered for a peaceful protest as the Chinese Communist Party (#CCP) Congress begins in Beijing.

Less than 2 minutes after a protester began a speech, however, several consulate staff, dressed in riot helmets and body armor, rushed out at the gathered crowd. The staff began destroying protest props and posters, and dragged at least one protester into the consulate grounds from outside the gate. A scuffle quickly developed.

Several consulate staff was seen surrounding and beating one protester that they pulled inside the consulate gates, holding down the victim and apparently tearing out a handful of hair, discarding it in a pile of signs that they had snatched from protesters:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kj45YCaF4yE

Police officers quickly intervened, rescuing several protesters that had been dragged into the consulate grounds. They quickly formed a line to prevent consulate staff from any further attempts at abducting protesters.

Bob, a Hongkonger at the protest, had several cuts on his face from the altercation with consulate staff. He told Chaser News that he saw at least 6 men came out "looking to beat up people". Sensing trouble, he stepped up to stop them, "but they dragged me inside and beat me up."

He said he was punched and kicked by the men, with injuries all over his body, and thought that he might die there. Fortunately a police officer went inside the consulate grounds and rescued him. The officers later told him that once the gate was closed, they wouldn't be able to do anything.

The man in the trench coat and face mask who came out to kick down the protesters' banners caught the attention of netizens, who noted his similar appearance to Consul-General Zhen Xiyuan in multiple pictures. He was also seen patting the back of one staff member in an armor vest as they retreated after their assault.

In a tweet sharing the video of the beating, Alicia Kearns, MP for Rutland and Melton, calls for the UK government to urgently investigate their violence on British soil and their violation of free speech. The activist group Hong Kong Indigenous Defence Force sharply criticized the Chinese Consulate's actions. As consulates are sovereign territory of its represented state, if they were allowed to drag citizens into the consulate grounds, then it meant they could forcibly abduct and detain anyone in Britain who displeased them. The group urges the world to "seriously re-examine the legitimacy of the CCP's overseas consulates".

UK summons China diplomat over Hong Kong protester beating at consulate, as MP says consul-general involved

The UK’s foreign minister has summoned the Chinese chargé d’affaires after a Hong Kong protester was dragged into the Chinese consulate grounds in Manchester and beaten up on Sunday, as a major Communist Party Congress began in Beijing.

Minister of State Jesse Norman told parliament that the government was “extremely concerned” about officials allegedly beating demonstrators, and they will meet with the Chinese ambassador’s deputy on Tuesday afternoon.

“Peaceful protest, as this house has always recognised, is a fundamental part of British society and our way of life,” he said.

Lawmakers repeatedly urged the government to oust any Chinese officials found to be involved in the incident, during the Q&A session at parliament. “It is a question of law as to what offences were committed on British soil,” Norman said.

He added that the Chinese ambassador Zheng Zeguang had not been summoned, when asked by MP Iain Duncan Smith.
