As many provinces in China face power shortage, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has said in a statement that it was the result of economic recovery and a cold spell without mentioning the authorities’ boycott of Australian coal since last month, which commentators believe has exacerbated the crisis.

60 Chinese and Hong Kong Enterprises Including SMIC and DJI Added to US Department of Commerce Entity List
US Department of Commerce added 60 Chinese and Hong Kong companies, including chipmaker SMIC and drone manufacturer DJI, to its Entity List on 18 December for their ties to the Chinese military.
The US Department of Commerce has added 77 companies to the Entity List recently, including 59 Chinese companies and one Hong Kong company. The Department of Commerce stated that these companies have been involved in activities contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests of the United States, include enabling China human right abuse, supporting the militarization and unlawful maritime claims in the South China Sea, acquiring U.S.-origin items in support of the People’s Liberation Army’s programs, and engaging in the theft of U.S. trade secrets.
Among these entities, SMIC has been accused of being involved in China's military-civilian fusion (MCF) program, with evidences of activities tied to the Chinese military industrial complex. The Secretary of Commerce Department Wilbur Ross stated that it is making sure that China is not able to leverage U.S. technologies, through SMIC, to support its military modernization, and emphasized that it is a necessary measure.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the incident after affected other movies. A former Chinese staff of Zoom, a video conference software company, was charged by federal prosecutors from the US Department of Justice on December 18th for sabotaging and disrupting video conferences concerning the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the June 4th Tiananmen Square Massacre. The staff was a 39-year-old man named Xinjiang Jin who was based in China. Jin and his associates had allegedly sent IP addresses and email addresses of the video conference participants, as well as conference passwords and other sensitive data directly to Chinese law enforcement agencies. FBI also revealed case-related emails indicating Jin was monitoring conferences for China, including those related to Hong Kong protests. Jin is currently wanted by the FBI.

After banning Huawei from taking part in the development of UK’s 5G infrastructure, Whitehall sources have indicated that UK plans to ban Chinese engineers from participating in the construction of Sizewell Nuclear Plant, according to UK’s Daily Mail, adding that if China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) were to engage in any part of the project, investment from CGN would also be denied.
Sizewell Nuclear Power Plant is a sister project to another nuclear power plant at Hinkley Point, each on a construction budget of £20 billion. The construction at Hinkley Point has begun in 2018 where 33% of the finance and 40 staff members are provided by CGN.
Sources have pointed out that although the project of building a nuclear plant in Sizewell is still at a preliminary stage, UK is already in discussion with French energy company EDF, aiming to confine CGN to the role of an investor and not take part in the construction of the power plant. CGN has expressed their willingness to cover 20% of the cost of the Sizewell plant construction as well as sending more engineers to UK to discuss the possibility of building new nuclear reactors in Bradwell.

On December 19, 2021, the Legislative Council Election took place in Hong Kong, after being postponed by the authorities for over a year.
In the Tin Sui polling station in Tin Shui Wai, very few voters turned up, unlike the long queue and the crowd during the Pro-democracy Primary Election in the summer of 2020.
Back then, the average waiting time of the polling station is one hour where the queue always consists of several hundreds of citizens.
In the 2021 LegCo Election, there were at least 4 uniform police patrolling the area. An InMedia reporter was confronted by the patrolling officers outside and the police inside the polling station.
Not that the police recorded the personal details of the reporter, an officer accused the reporter of being a "fake reporter." "Never heard of InMedia. Who is your boss?" the police said.
The police ordered the reporter to show the photos that were taken. The police also claimed that they have already arrested some people who took photos in other polling station for "loitering".
In another polling station in Wanchai, the police forbade a InMedia reporter from conducting interview in the unrestricted area outside the polling station. The police claimed that "only iCable and another outlet" can cover the election news.

HK Drifters Received Calls Asking to Vote in the LegCo Election
The Hong Kong Government and a number of companies and organisations had been urging voters to vote in the recent Legislative Council Election. A number of Gangpiao (also known as Hong Kong drifters) told the Citizen News that they had constantly been urged to vote on Dec 19, 2021 (Polling Day) by Chinese-funded organisations and associations of Chinese fellow townsmen, describing it as a "soul-chasing call".

HK Drifters Received Calls Asking to Vote in the LegCo Election
The Hong Kong Government and a number of companies and organisations had been urging voters to vote in the recent Legislative Council Election. A number of Gangpiao (also known as Hong Kong drifters) told the Citizen News that they had constantly been urged to vote on Dec 19, 2021 (Polling Day) by Chinese-funded organisations and associations of Chinese fellow townsmen, describing it as a "soul-chasing call".

A Twitter user shared images of the city's Christmas displays in the previous years: 2019, 2020, 2021, and - in stark contrast, 2022.
"Russians try to steal normal life away from our citizens, but we won’t give them a chance to steal the biggest holidays –- the New Year and Christmas -- from our children," the city's mayor Vitali Klitschko said when unveiling the tree.
Kyiv city hall had hesitated to put up the tree, the mayor said, not least because weeks of Russian attacks on energy infrastructures have worn down the Ukrainian power grid. But the city hall adapted, powering the tree's fairy lights with a diesel generator and reusing some decorations from previous years.
"We called it 'the Christmas tree of Ukrainian invincibility', since they are doing everything for the children to have a holiday despite difficult times."
