Trump hints at banning more Chinese firms, Alibaba included

US President Donald Trump considers more Chinese companies sanctions and Alibaba could be the next target.

Asked at a press conference whether other Chinese companies such as Alibaba would be banned after targeting TikTok, President Trump replied, “Well, we're looking at other things, yes.”

According to a recent CNN analysis, Trump called Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, a friend of his after Ma said he would donate supplies to the US for fighting the pandemic. Still, Alibaba might become the next target. In a statement made earlier this month, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the expansion of the Clean Network programme. He called on US allies around the world to prevent intellectual property, including COVID-19 vaccine research, from being stored and accessed on Chinese cloud-based service providers as such as Alibaba, Baidu, China Mobile, China Telecom and Tencent.

Rallies organized by Canada-Hong Kong Link and Ontario Universities Hong Kong Awareness Group were held in nine cities across Canada on Aug. 16 to call on Ottawa to take “immediate action” against the controversial implementation of the national security law in Hong Kong, by offering a "Safe Harbor Program' for Hong Kongers at risk, invoking the Magnitsky Act to sanction responsible Chinese and HK officials, and introducing legislations to stop foreign interferences in Canadian politics.

Atrocities committed by the CCP were also openly addressed by speakers at the rallies to inform the masses about the party's numerous violations against basic human rights.

Reuters: ByteDance's Censorship on Indonesian News App Requested Removal of Unfavourable Anti-China Content

Reuters quoted six insiders saying, ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, censored content that was critical of the Chinese government on a popular Indonesian news app "Baca Berita" (BaBe) from 2018 to mid-2020. Keywords including Tienanmen and President Mao were on the banned list.

Quoting various sources, the team at ByteDance's Beijing Headquarter instructed local Indonesian moderators to remove all negative articles related to the CCP on BaBe. Previously Indonesia had banned TikTok briefly for displaying "pornography, inappropriate content and profanity". As ByteDance wanted to lift the ban, they compromised with the government to employ a local TikTok team and strengthened the company's influence in Indonesia. ByteDance acquired Baca Berita shortly after.

Insiders revealed, after the acquisition, ByteDance's Beijing Headquarter created new moderation guidelines for BaBe. Contents perceived as critical of China were prohibited from publishing or they would be removed from the platform. A person directly involved said all articles containing sensitive words, such as Tienanmen and President Mao, had to be taken down. Another direct source said ByteDance also censored an article relating to the South China Sea tension from Antara, an Indonesia official news agency.

Man From China Diagnosed with COVID-19 after Clandestine Entry to Vietnam, Identified Before Causing Community Infection.

The Vietnamese government announced a confirmed case of COVID-19 from a Chinese who enter the country illegally. The local police arrested the 27-year-old man, who entered northern Vietnam with seven other compatriots on the 27th of last month and travelled to Ho Chi Minh City by car, upon arrival and sent to quarantine. He was confirmed a confirmed case on the 12th of this month after nucleic acid tests.

According to VnExpress, the Vietnamese government announced 18 new cases on July 14, including a Chinese illegal entrant who crossed the border from northern Vietnam with seven other people on July 27. Police found him and arrested the day after, then took him to the city's District 7 Hospital for quarantine and test, where he was finally diagnosed with COVID-19 on 12 August and is currently being treated at Cu Chi Field Hospital.

The Ho Chi Minh City Disease Control Unit said it was fortunate that the case was discovered in time; otherwise, this person would have become a source of infection and spread the virus in the community. As of Sunday (16th), Vietnam reported a total of 962 confirmed cases and 24 deaths. This illegal migrant is case #912.

The epidemic has led the Vietnamese government to close the border since March this year, but incidents of illegal entry of foreigners continue to occur. 152 illegal entrant has been arrested since May, mainly Chinese (72%), followed by Cambodians.

Taiwan Media: Clearly Challenging China’s Tolerance Limit

The South China Sea Strategic Situation Probing Initiative (SCSPI), an official Chinese research organization, had frequently released military activities of the United States in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait. The SCSPI tweeted on Twitter that a U.S. military EP-3E reconnaissance aircraft operated in the closest distance, 50.19 nautical miles (about 92.95 kilometers), away from the provinces of Guangdong and Fujian. ETtoday, a media of Taiwan, stated that it was a challenge to the tolerance limits of China clearly after further stepping by the U.S. military for 109.67 kilometers recently.

The SCSPI also tweeted that the U.S. Navy EP-3E reconnaissance aircraft operated actively near the Taiwan Strait, taking on quite a winding path on Aug 15. Besides, a U.S. Air Force E-8C Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (Joint STARS) reconnaissance aircraft had approached Guangdong Province many times recently since July.

The World Against China: US Senators Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Stop China’s Expansion into Latin America

The US Congress has renewed its efforts to stunt China’s global expansion with Democrats and Republicans in the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations joining hands to push for a new law that strengthens US-Latin America partnership, countering Beijing’s economic, security, and intelligence activities in the region.

The legislation—the Advancing Competitiveness, Transparency, and Security in the Americas Act—was introduced in the Senate on 14 August by Democrat Bob Menendez and Republican Marco Rubio alongside a number of other senators, including Ben Cardin, Tim Kaine, and Ted Cruz.

The new legislation aims to improve the US’s diplomatic and economic ties with Lain America with a view to strengthening economic competitiveness, safeguarding digital infrastructure, and addressing abuse of human rights through digital surveillance in the region. It is considered to be the most significant and groundbreaking bipartisan effort to contain China’s expansion into Latin America and the Caribbean ever.

The legislation covers four major areas, namely the US’s economic and diplomatic presence in the region, countering malign economic practice, securing physical and digital infrastructure, and supporting civil society. The law provides for an array of measures. Eligibility for US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) initiatives, for one, will be extended to Caribbean countries. Futhermore, 35 percent of the DFC’s budget will be dedicated to Latin America and the Caribbean in the next 10 years. In addition, it will give access to a US$10-million fund for the purpose of promoting internet freedom and fostering civil society. The law will also require the Secretary of State to further educational, professional, and cultural exchanges so as to counter the Chinese government’s influence in the region.

Opinion: Canada needs a new engagement strategy that opposes China’s thuggery

//The 11-year prison sentence handed to Michael Spavor is just the latest example of the ruthlessness of China’s efforts to put pressure on the Canadian government, and in turn on the U.S. administration, to return Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou. As The Washington Post’s editorial board wrote on Aug. 13: “China’s kangaroo courts operate in service to the country’s Communist Party and its leader, Xi Jinping, whose contempt for international standards of law and justice is manifest.” As Times Wang outlined in The Globe last week, Canadians should refuse to recognize China’s “justice” system.//

Non-jury trial ordered for Hong Kong’s 47 democrats national security case

Hong Kong’s justice minister has ordered a non-jury trial for the city’s largest national security case to date in which dozens of pro-democracy politicians face up to life in prison, according to documents seen by AFP.

Trial by jury has been used by Hong Kong’s common law legal system for 177 years but legislation imposed by China in 2020 to curb dissent allows cases to be heard by dedicated national security judges.

"Gravely Concerning": Canadian MPs Urge Ottawa to Condemn Hong Kong Government Naming Vancouver Editor on "Wanted List"

In a letter to the government, two Canadian MPs asked Foreign Minister Melanie Joly to publicly oppose Hong Kong government’s action of putting Victor Ho, a former newspaper editor living in Vancouver, on a “wanted list” for suspected subversion of state power.

“We find this gravely concerning. Mr. Ho is a Canadian citizen, living in Canada. This is an intrusion on Mr. Ho’s legal rights, and any application of the National Security Law is a direct attack on this fundamental freedom of thought, belief, opinion, expression and assembly as protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms,” wrote #HeatherMcPherson, MP for Edmonton-Strathcona, and #JennyKwan, MP for Vancouver-East.

On July 27, Ho joined other activists at a news conference in Toronto to announce the formation of an electoral organizing committee for a Hong Kong “parliament in exile” that would oppose Beijing’s continued clampdown on political freedoms.

A week later, the Hong Kong government’s security bureau said on its website that it “severely condemns” Ho and two others from the news conference, and that, on the basis of Hong Kong’s #NationalSecurityLaw, “police shall spare no efforts in pursuing the cases in … order to bring the offenders to justice.”
