China's debt-trap diplomacy

American statesman John Adams, who served as president from 1797 to 1801, famously said, “There are two ways to conquer and enslave a country: One is by the sword; the other is by debt.” China, choosing the second path, has embraced colonial-era practices and rapidly emerged as the world’s biggest official creditor.

With its international loans surpassing more than 5 percent of the global GDP, China has now eclipsed traditional lenders, including the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and all the creditor nations of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) put together. By extending huge loans with strings attached to financially vulnerable states, it has not only boosted its leverage over them but also ensnared some in sovereignty-eroding debt traps.

Tomorrow, June 4, 2021, marks 32 years after June 4th Tiananmen Massacre, a brutal crackdown on pro-democracy civilians by the Chinese Communist Party in Beijing, in 1989.

In Hong Kong, the annual candlelight vig has been banned by the police. Despite that, the Justice and Peace Commission of the Hong Kong Catholic Diocese will continue to organize a Mass outside their seven churches in the evening.

However, on the morning of June 3, 2021, some hostile banners with words "Cult invades religion" were placed outside the churches, smearing the mass as a potential breach of the #NationalSecurityLaw.

Porson Chan, project officer of the Commission, responded that they had no intention to correlate the false accusations on the banner to the June 4 Mass, emphasizing that the Mass is a legal religious activity protected by Basic Law. Thus the event would be held as scheduled.

Hong Kong Restaurant Gives Free #Candles On the Eve of #June4 Commemoration Day

On June 3, 2021, the restaurant Villa Villa Cafe & Bar, located in North Point, Hong Kong, placed boxes of candle for customers and passersby to take.

The annual candlelight vigil in commemoration of the June 4th #TiananmenMassacre has been banned by the Hong Kong police for the second year. The organizer who had been holding the #vigil in #VictoriaPark since 1990 called on Hongkongers to commemorate the pro-democracy victims of the brutal crackdown by the CCP "in each of their own way".

In their facebook page on June 2, 2021, Villa Villa Cafe & Bar wrote that they "made a wrong order of birthday candles". The restaurant welcomed fellow citizens to take them for free. The remaining candles would be donated to a church nearby.

The person-in-charge of the restaurant Mr Tse told InMedia that "everything's in the heart".

Hong Kong Authorities Accuse June 4th Museum of being "Unlicensed", days before Annual Commemoration of Tiananmen Massacre

[Editor's note: The June 4th Museum has been operating at its current location since moving there in April 2019. This is the first accusation of violations in the two years since.]

On the afternoon of June 1, 2021, officers from the Hong Kong government's Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (#FEHD) accused the June 4th Museum in Hong Kong of being "unlicensed".

The museum had only been reopened for three days after updating their displays over the past month, when 5 FEHD enforcement officers arrived on the premises, mere days ahead of the commemorative day of the Tiananmen Massacre.

Operated by the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, the Museum is currently running an exhibition on the theme of "The '89 Movement and Hong Kong". The museum calls on Hongkongers to commemorate the 32th anniversary of the Tiananmen Massacre on June 4th, despite the police banning the annual candlelight vigil in Victoria park.

Enforcement officers claimed that licences are required for "entertainment venues" that are open to the public, and said that exhibitions are no exception. According to the Places of Public Entertainment Ordinance, offenders can face a fine of up to HK$25,000 and imprisonment for six months, and a further fine of HK$2,000 per day if the offence continues.

The officers took the personal details of the staff at the museum.

Shop in Hong Kong Distributes Candles In Commemoration of 32 year-mark of #June4 #TianamenMassacre

The pro-democracy kidswear store #Chickeeduck is giving out free candles from June 2 to June 4, 2021, encouraging fellow citizens to commemorate the June 4th Tiananmen Massacre on their own.

The Tsuen Wan branch has prepared 1,000 sets of candle. The store also has electric candle that writes "Support the Tiananmen Mother" to give away. The storekeeper said they came from a Tsuen Wan district councillor.

When the Tsuen Wan branch of Chickeeduck was inaugurated in May 2021, the store was raided by the national security police. When asked whether they were afraid the same thing would happen, the storekeeper said, "we are not worried, we have been following the procedures."

The Hong Kong Police has for the second year in a row banned the annual candlelight vigil commemorating the victims of Chinese Communist Party's brutal crackdown on the pro-democracy rallies at Beijing's #TiananmenSquare in 1989.

June 4, 2021 marks 32 years since the #ChineseCommunistParty government ordered the military to crack down on the pro-democracy civilians, mainly students, on Beijing's #TiananmenSquare in 1989.

The annual #CandlelightVigil held since 1990 in Hong Kong's Victoria Park has been banned for the second year by the Hong Kong Police.

At around 14:45 on June 4, 2021, the Hong Kong police cited the #PublicSecurityOrdinance and blocked six football fields, one basketball court, the central lawn and the running trail in Victoria Park.

The video captured how the police cordonned off the park's foodball field as early as at 14:00. More than 20 police vehicles and over 100 officers were also sighted near the park.

On the same day, the police has arrested two civilians, including the vice-chairperson of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, Chow Hang-tung, for allegedly promoting the commemorative event in social media.

7,000-strong #Police Deployment to Suppress Annual #TiananmenMassacre #Vigil in Hong Kong

32 years ago on June 4, 1989, in Beijing, the #ChineseCommunistParty government ordered a bloody crackdown on pro-democracy civilians on the Tiananmen Square. The military used tanks and fired live rounds, brutally killing and injuring countless civilians in the PRC's capital.

2021 marks 32 years after the Massacre which is still denied by the #CCP.

After cordonning off Victoria Park, the city's largest park in the urban area and the venue for the annual Tiananmen Massacre #CandlelightVigil at around 14:00, the Hong Kong police at 17:28 blocked all three cross-harbour tunnels by setting up road block and intercepting vehicles, resulting in huge traffic chaos.

Uncannily, today the streets of Hong Kong see at least two police armoured tanks and one water cannon vehicle, to suppress the commemorative event that the police has already banned.
